crunchtastic
You are judged by your appearance and good looks dont help in these situations either. A hotel lounge/bar/dance floor attracts such a fast moving crowd it is nearly impossible to focus then add alcohol to impair which can let your guard down. It every man for himself it seems! A beer bottle can help deter any unscrupulous devil from throwing something into that drinky winky. well, thank god! I've been travelling and barhopping alone for years and not once has anyone attempted anything dangerous with my drinky winky. Cheers! Here's to being safely unattractive! KinkaidAlum
This thread is hilarious.I have traveled all over the world and have NEVER had a problem. Use common sense and don't be a schmuck. You are much more likely to be a victim of crime in Houston than in most other places in the world unless you are planning a trip to Fallujah. editor
You are much more likely to be a victim of crime in Houston than in most other places in the world unless you are planning a trip to Fallujah. But be careful in Chicago. Americans are more likely to be murdered in Chicago than killed in Iraq (I was always really unpopular at work for suggesting we put that little statistic on the air).Back on topic -- bars are always an opportunity to illegally separate a tourist from his money. In Chicago the area currently called Viagra Triangle used to be full of bars where pretty girls would chat up tourists who would buy them drinks and find out later that the girls work for the bar and the drinks they bought cost $100 each. It was called a "clip job."That area has since been cleaned up, but I hear the same thing goes on in Tokyo in Kabuki-cho and to a lesser extent in Roppongi Hills. The girls in Roppongi are self-regulating for reasons beyond the scope of this thread.
Vertigo58
Try riding the inner city buses in Los Angeles. That will really put you to the test. Even more interesting is cruising through the gang infested hoods of that city. Got to see to get the full grasp. Nuff said.
ssullivan
In the picture I posted the red stamp on the right side that reads "Dorval/396" at the bottom is entry at Montreal's airport.Coming back to the United States we cleared American immigration in Montreal, which I thought was interesting. Turns out it's not the only place that happens. Back when the Eurostar left from Waterloo International, I cleared French immigration while still in the train station in London.Just about all of the major Canadian airports have US Immigration and Customs pre-clearance stations in them. The reason is the huge volume of US-bound travelers coming out of airports in places like Toronto, Montr
ssullivan
I've heard that in the Eurozone if you go to a heavily trafficked border there are sometimes still guard shacks there a little bit off the highway where you can get a stamp... say for going from France into Germany. I heard this about a year after the borders were dropped, so I don't know if it's still true.It was still the case in 2006, when I drove over the border from France into Spain. However, we didn't bother stopping to get a passport stamp, so I have no stamp from Spain. It's the only nation I've entered with my passport that I don't have a stamp for.I did have to ask for a stamp at CDG. The lady barely looked at my passport and handed it back to me. I asked her to stamp it, and she smiled, took it back, stamped it, and then said "Bienvenue en France!" and handed it back to me again.I've only had my passport stamped once arriving back in the US. I've only been to Barcelona, but it was incredible. I would go back in a heartbeat. You can see my pictures from that city by clicking here. My partner and his sister are actually going to Spain and Portugal for about two weeks in November. Unfortunately I'm not going; I have no vacation time left this year and that's a horrible month for me to try and take any time off this year due to my biggest project ever at work entering its last 30 days on November 1, after a two-year implementation period. So of course I'm insanely jealous that they're going and I'm not. But I'll survive. We're already planning our next big vacation together, which will be to Peru, Chile, and Easter Island next spring. Not that I think Toronto is bad or anything, but it's certainly not Barcelona.
