TheNiche Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metrop...an/5554132.htmlLa Porte city leaders wanting to attract a hotel to the local Sylvan Beach area won approval from Harris County commissioners Tuesday to pursue a developer. The city's first call of action is to issue a request for qualification for the project and bear all the financial risk for the project. The city of La Porte now leases five acres of park space from the county that includes the Sylvan Beach Pavilion. The proposed 200-room hotel would sit where the pavilion that overlooks Galveston Bay is now. Quote
bachanon Posted February 21, 2008 Posted February 21, 2008 too bad they don't want to integrate the pavilion into the new hotel design. too much trouble, i'm sure. is it in bad shape (the pavilion)? never been there, don't know if it's worth saving. Quote
Slidey Posted March 12, 2008 Posted March 12, 2008 FYI, Texas dance halls were named to Preservation Texas' Most Endangered Historic Properties last month, and Texas Dance Hall Preservation is on the case! We'd like to see the historic pavilion incorporated into the hotel development project. If you're interested in lending your support, please email me at "steph at texasdancehall.org". Thanks!Steph McDougal Quote
Slidey Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 The demolition of the Sylvan Beach Pavilion is officially opposed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation - Southwest Regional Office, Preservation Texas, Texas Historical Commission, and Texas Dance Hall Preservation. We've all sent letters supporting the preservation of the pavilion to Mayor Porter and Commissioner Garcia. In addition, a group of LaPorte residents has a petition going and is rallying the community around the pavilon. You can see what they're up to at www.savethepavilion.org. Check out the Links section for a PDF describing the damage to the pavilion from Hurricane Carla, as well as an aerial photo showing that the second floor ballroom was above the flood water.I plan to speak at the April 14 LaPorte City Council meeting in support of the pavilion. If you're interested, come on out!Steph McDougalsteph@texasdancehall.org Quote
