Houston Neighborhood Crime Rankings 2004-2007

We talk about crime in the various Houston nabes a lot and it has a tendency to pull topics askew so I thought I'd list the real stats courtesy of Houston Crime Maps. It appears that their list includes all reported crimes from January, 2004 to October, 2007. I've posted 7 categories. One thing worth wondering is how comparable the populations in each of these areas are.

Not bragging because I live here but it only reinforces my experience; the East End doesn't show up in the top ten in any of these categories except drunk driving. Alief.......just shows how far the burbs can fall. I am surprised about Westwood, although there are a lot of skankesque apartments nearby. Fifth Ward and Third Ward only show up for assault and drugs. Greenspoint crime isn't myth; it's the northern SW Houston.

Whewwwwwww! I panicked when I saw Westwood but then realized there are two Westwoods and thankfully Westwood within the 77025 is not in the top 10! Still, alarming numbers indeed for the various areas of the city.

good information. sharpstown should hire that man in pasadena who shot the two burglars for security. they definitely have some issues.

almost 89000 burglaries is staggering as well.

Wow. So many of the high murder rate areas are in the south west between the 610 and beltway. That makes me so glad that I live inside the loop. Even Sugarland and the Galleria are closer to the murder zones than I am.

I know a few people from Rice who live in that part of town. The reason they live so far away is they claim it is cheaper, but one guy has had his car stolen once and broken into 3 times. Is it really worth it? It's not even that much cheaper than what I have paid in side the loop.

Maybe I should've put rankings in quotes as that was my term. One way that I did find to compare per capita crime was to take the total crimes by HPD division and then divide those numbers by the estimated population of each per the HPD website.. I did the division and below are the results;

Keep in mind too, that this tiny area is merely a passage way for all automobiles entering and leaving the neighborhods that surround. Makes a perfect spot for HPD to do survellaince as well. Love it.

You might want to look at the per capita numbers. "Inside the loop" could be the most dangerous place in town.

don't waste that bottle of champagne, the near east end is covered by the south central station not the eastside station.

The near east end stats are probably further skewed because many of the calls, especially on property crime, go to Victor Trevino's office and not HPD at all.

But there are problems with the per capita statistics as well. They are based on the number of people residing in an area. Busy commercial areas, such as Downtown, Uptown, TMC, Greenway etc. have many thousands of non-resident people (and cars) in them every day, so the per capita statistics skew against all of those districts.

Agreed. There are several sites the list crime risk (adjusted for population) for specific zip codes. That avoids different definitions of neighborhood boundaries, but it still doesn't handle the non-resident impact on crime.

I was thinking the same thing. I noticed my 'hood which is near Rice was lumped together with the entire 3rd ward. Those two neighborhoods are like two different worlds.

There's just something nice about having a cop car parked in front of your house with binoculors that makes you feel safe.

Kind of like that nice fuzzy feeling. I was serious when I told them I wish they would always park there even for breaks. This is a good thing trust me. Quite serious. It has become way better than it was about 7 years ago. Clean house they do well. Responses are much faster too. Since its a long running joke about cops hanging around donuts shops, a new one nearby would be A-ok with us. Seriously.
