tulsa paper

The Conference USA men's basketball tournament is likely destined for Tulsa in March 2009, CBSSports.com reported on Friday.

The University of Tulsa and Tulsa Sports Commission declined to comment, saying that negotiations are still ongoing to bring the tournament to town. Four other schools -- Memphis, Alabama-Birmingham, Houston and UTEP -- have also submitted bids to host the tournament

it's about time... it's idiotic for them to keep putting it in memphis year after year after year

the winner of the tourney gets an automatic bid to the NCAAs and giving the conference's best team home field advantage almost guarantees the automatic bid to a team (memphis) who is going to make the NCAAs regardless of the outcome of the cusa tourney...

i can't understand how rice and houston don't team up to put the tourney in toyota center.

i don't know anything about tulsa, but surely there's more to do, more places to stay, and a better arena in houston, even if tulsa's is brand new.

Tulsa's new arena

Though honestly, I'm not sure if it'd be held there or at the University of Tulsa - wouldn't expect 18K crowds

I'm originally from Tulsa, but I'll have to agree with your comments. However, tournament (and even convention) locations are most certainly not based solely on those criteria......

EDIT: Just read the full article, and it'd be at the new BOK Center...

How did Tulsa snag a Cesar Pelli designed arena? All we could do was a boring Toyota Center?

Because they desperately wanted something "iconic" and were willing to pay extra to get it. Houston already has numerous buildings designed by Pelli and other superstar architects; Tulsa.... not so much.

But Tulsa has some cool buildings. I took an archie tour there once.

This is completely off topic, but just ran across these photos from inside the Mayo Hotel there...apparently it's under renovation, but only the bottom floors have been redone so far. Just thought the photos were pretty cool

It has it's own wikipedia page, lol:

They renovated the main floor a few years ago and it's now a banquet hall/event facility. They are "talking" about renovating the rest of the building into apartments and a small hotel. The latest word is that renovations are to start in January, but they've made similar announcements before, so I would not be holding my breath in anticipation...

Yeah, I failed to mention that it's the slowest renovation of all time...just thought the photos were pretty cool. When I saw them I was confused at first because I hadn't realized the bottom floors were open
