The BELLAIRE GYM. Dancing for teens. I don't think you could be over 18 & get in. & there was this mean ole woman with a yard stick, who'd go around & pass it down your front if you were dancing too close.

The Moving Sidewalks played there... Music Machine... Playboys of Edinburgh... & lots of local bands. I'm trying to remember if I saw Fever Tree there. Just can't quite pull that memory out, so maybe not.

Boy, did the Moving Sidewalks make all the right moves, or not? Hoo Hoo Oh for the days...

Never made it to the Bellaire gym, but I did make it to a lot of KILT Saturday Night Sock-hops at the Mason Park Gym on 75th Street. KILT DJ's were always there spinning the platters and acting crazy. They had a mean old woman with a yard stick too, but we -- horny and determined teenagers that we were -- managed to stay out of her line of sight enough to "get close" and still have a good time. Of course that doesn't include all the making out that was going on outside around the park. I agree -- those were the days -- and nights.

Where was the Bellaire Gym? Would this be part of Bellaire High School or at a YMCA? Please do tell...

I believe they are talking about the city gym that sat on the same block as city hall and the police department. It was torn down and rebuilt about 10 years ago.

I believe they are talking about the city gym that sat on the same block as city hall and the police department. It was torn down and rebuilt about 10 years ago. The old gym was un-airconditioned and basically just one large room with wood bleachers. A lot of community events went on there.

That old gym holds lots of memories.

Elementry school Basketball games, Tumbling and Wrestling classes, etc went on there, I think Mr. Vic driscoll was in charge then. I sat outside when the Moving Sidewalks played and listened from out there, (mean ole woman with a yard stick kicked me out.)

There were also weekly teen dances in Linkwood, off Braeswood, in about 1967, when my brother went, but I went to a James Bond movie instead and saw Casino Royale, If I recall correctly.
