  1. This was a joke, right?

He probably was serious. I don't think heritage and sense of place have much room in the world view of people like niche. It's a shame but I'm not surprised he doesn't have a grasp of the historical signifigance that downtown holds for many of us and the desire to see it grow and prosper over the wants of more strip center developement on the Katy Prairie. It is a deeply held belief for many that DT is worth preserving and growing.

  2. yeah - weekend rates there aren't too bad at all. of course, for a weekend, you'd have to reserve a little more in advance than say, today.

i also forgot about the motel on main at 59 - but there's something about that place that i can't quite put my finger on - probably why i forgot.

Because of it's proximity to the far left lane of north-bound 59? :P

    [sorry...strayed off there a bit]

  3. There's no space in Uptown. Keep in mind that a soccer field is bigger than a football field. A soccer stadium is no small structure like a basketball arena is. You've got to have empty space or unused space that can be claimed. I don't think you'd find any such space near Uptown.

Not to mention parking and access. DelMar is a huge parcel in a very accessable location. I hope they are still considering it.

  4. I'm no real estate type. But hasnt the commercial space in downtown reflected an upward demand, very recently? Maybe the developers of Pavillion re-ran their projections given this upturn...and decided they are better off with office rather than residential....and they will still build the towers, but they will be offices.

If I'm wrong about the upturn, let me know, but I thought that with the Enron building getting filled up, things were looking good on that front.

Office was always in the plans. It's only the residential they have deleted.

  5. So I am assuming for Heights resident to shop at Wal Mart is 45 north or I-10 beltway ?

Personaly? I'm a shopping snob. I don't care to shop in WalMart's filthy stores filled with ill-mannerd, pot-bellied, perpetualy pregnant women and their 8 kids running rampant nor do I desire to be "serviced"-that's a joke-by their perpetually miserable "service" staff. The few times I was in a WalMart I never saw a more unhappy group of employees-almost as if they were doomed.

So if I have to go to a "Big Box", I'll choose Target as they seem to at least keep the aisles swept and have half-way decent help.

  6. Why not have the City of Houston purchase the land across 59 from GRB, and donate enough of that land to Dynamo. Then we have Dynamo pay 100% of the stadium's building and material costs, with Houston giving the team tax breaks. Have the City of Houston use the other lots around it for other crazy developments with investors and new businesses (like Houston Pavilions), and we get money back from the taxes and lease of the land. We'd make the money back, the stadium would be worth a lot, and Dynamo/soccer would have a better chance to grow.

When the time was right, Dynamo could move back to Robertson while construction of their bigger stadium was done...on the same space as the one already built. Stadium expansion, yo. It would save so much for the team, and Houston would win more than any other city in MLS.

I know! Let's just pay for EVERYTHING so the uber wealthy team owners don't have to dirty their hands with icky construction contracts, land transactions and ticket sales. We'll just pay for everything and send them a check every month!!!

Next we can build "crazy" [whatever that means] developments for them and give them all the profits!!!

    CAAAAAAAAAAaRAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! :D

  7. Maybe the "Houston Dynamo of Sugar Land" would work? :D

Hey, if the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" can do it, why not us? (Actually, I think that's the stupidest idea I've ever heard...freakin' freaks out there in LaLa land.)

Any dumber than the Dallas Cowboys of Irving soon to be Arlington?

  8. Following the FC Dallas model for the Houston Dynamo will be the death knell for a squad with a pretty promising future here. At least in Dallas ALL of the suburbs are on the North side of town. You can build a successfule suburban soccer club there. They try that here they will be lucky to have 5000 fans in there for a game in years where the team does not win. The school district would probably draw more fans for high school football.

If you build a soccer stadium anywhere outside of Houston, you end up being just another Dallas. You will NOT have a genuine Houston team just as Dallas does NOT have genuine football and baseball teams-they don't play in or generate revenue for Dallas. They suck off the Dallas label while generating revenue for Irving and Arlington-and now for Frisco.

I'd prefer to have our Houston teams play IN Houston. The benefits for the city far out-weigh any other option.

And once again, is DelMar off the table?

  9. Remember the movie.... Field of Dreams...... "If you build it, they will come"..... (and that was an IOWA corn field)........What do you think?

I think that was a movie...ya know? Fiction?

I think the City of Houston would find a way to fund millions into the stadium if the project were worth it. I just don't think it's worth it yet. They'll build a small-ass stadium in the boondocks in order to keep up with the trend of high-school/MLS stadiums out there, when our Dynamo fans at the MLS Cup proved that we're the trend-SETTERS, not trend-followers.

As I've said before, the area across 59 from GRB needs a redevelopment in the baddest. Let the MLS stadium be part of a redevelopment there...but after you get a better assessment on Dynamo fan support. Houston shouldn't have to put any money into a stadium if it's not worth it. But in a couple years, it will be. Someone tell Luck not to rush it.

I agree DJ. It's not worth it at this time. Let's see if they stay in Houston first. Have you heard anymore of the DelMar site?

while i a do not follow a lot of soccer it is good to have another incredible winning team here in houston!

    job well done!

Agreed. The operative being "here in Houston" as opposed to the Arlington Rangers, the Irving Cowboys and now the Frisco FC Dallas. I wonder if Dallas will ever get their own baseball, football and soccer teams? :P

  11. family history has it that JFK spoke here(sorry, I don't remember, was an infant) and then left for Dallas. Cut to early 2000's, was looking at apts in the Rice Lofts-I was shown an apt on the 13th floor(!) and it had a plaque on the inside of the door naming it the JFK Suite-the last place that he spent the night here. The rental agent said that they were not renting it at the time as they were having "problems" with the AC(!!)

    See post #4...and welcome!

  13. On a somewhat related subject of where W Gray meets Gray:

For some time now, I've been trying to get a handle on where the 'zero' lines fall (i.e. where the address would be 1 N Some St, or 1 W Any Street). I can't tell if it is Main St and the bayou all the way out to Barker Cypress or if it is the latitude and longitude line of where the bayou and Main St. meet (Allen's landing has also been tossed in as a guess).

Things I haven't done yet, but might:

-Call the post office or City Hall or Fire Department

-Plot out all the 1 N Any Streets in Google Earth (partial list: UHD, Bayou Bend, Rainbow Lodge)

    -Give up

Finally, wherever these lines are, do you notice/is it true that the odd and even numbers change sides? North of Buffalo Bayou evens on N/S streets are on the East side and South of the bayou they're on the West?

Good post. South of UHDT is Main-north of that is N. Main. That is established as the street was expanded northward and someone decided to change the name as opposed to giving the next address northward a negative number as in:-One Main. Therefore, from UHDT traveling north, the street is called North Main. Our home address on the west side of the street on N. Main is an odd number. We have a property on the same side south of UHDT that is even. Frankly, I've never given any thought to what the difference is until now.

If someone has an answer I'll give them the Trivia Street Numbering Challange Award 2006. Award to announced at a later date... ^_^

  14. not much to go on (and nothing too detailed), but this site mentions it:

    http://www.lonestarspirits.org/haunthouston.html

The room in which John F. Kennedy spent his last night on Earth has been home to cold spots, rattling doors & beds as well as balls of light. Perhaps the ghost of the late President is making himself known. Ghost dancers have been seen in the ballroom, and one of our own team members saw a lady in white pacing where the balcony USED to be.

and here's a picture of the room:

    http://pictopia.com/perl/gal?process=galle...=houston:131181

JFK used the International Suite on the 5th floor of the Rice to change clothes and rest before going to the Coliseum.

He spent his last night in Rm. 850 of the Texas Hotel in Ft. Worth.
