  1. Gosh! Imagine that! The person whose organization owns the structure, and the person most responsible for it, and who will be using it the most, having the unmitigated gall to tell the designer what he wants it to look like. What gall! Whoever heard of such a thing?

What is it with you people? I've seen a lot of elitist snobbery in my time but you guys take the prize. You're living proof of something I've believed about architects for a long time. They don't design buildings for the people who will use them. They design them to impress other architects.

Some of us have higher standards. If it makes you more comfortable to call it "elitist snobbery", go for it.

  2. If you have a specific problem with the Dallas Cowboys' non-inclusion of the city where Jerry Jones' Stadium is built...

I don't think any of us have a problem with the fact Dallas doesn't have an NFL, MLS or MLB team...we just find it amusing that you get so defensive.

  3. The way I see it -- Dallas gets a football stadium and a Tarrant County city ends up paying for a large part of it. Seems like a good deal to me.

Actually Arlington gets a new stadium and an NFL team. Dallas still has neither.

  4. Let's see, winning championships you say...?

    Rockets 2 NBA championships

    Mavs 0

    Astros 1 NL championship

    Rangers 0 AL championships

Texans 0 championships in 4 years

Cowboys 5 championships in 45 years

Houston Aeros 1 IHL, 1 AHL

    Dallas Stars 1 NHL championship

    Houston Dynamo 1 MLS championship

    FC Dallas 0 MLS championships

    Houston Comets 4 WNBA championships

    Dallas 0 <no WNBA team>

Other than the Cowboys, it seems we lead in all categories (10 vs. 6). Give us 45 years and we'll talk again.

Ummmm...but the Cowboys and Rangers aren't Dallas teams...so do we still need to wait 45 years? :P

  5. Well, first off, you didn't say "Christianity", you said "religion" and any historian will tell you religion existed before Christianity.

Second, as I said in my post, I was not and am not questioning your conclusion that basilicas were originally created as secular spaces. I agree. No need to repeat it again. All I said (and in fact said quite explicitly) was that their mere existence in the second century BC does not prove that they were secular structures.

My original intent was to correct filio's incorrect definition-not to debate religion or the appropriation of an architectural style by religion. I think I succeeded in that.

  6. I'm not getting how their existence in 2nd century BC Pompei dispels the "myth" that basilicas were of a religious origin.

Well, first off, "BC" should dispel it had anything to do with Christianity and second, any architectural historian will tell you basilicas were created as secular spaces devoted to public markets, courts, assemblies, etc. They were not originated to house religious events.

Even earlier basilicas in Rome lend credence to the fact they originated as purely secular places.

  7. How would you define 'basilica'?

Architecturaly it contained a central nave sometimes flanked by at least one aspe-but usually a pair-and side aisles lined with columns.

In practice it was a public building that contained markets, courts and various other public functions.

Ultimatly the term and architectural concept was appropriated by certain christian sects.

One of the earliest was the basilique de Pomp

  8. Maybe the Texans should get a pro team to go with the pro affiliation before you make that statement.

I know the Rangers arent great but since this is somewhat an NFL thread, the real argument here is the COWBOYS football team is Greater Than Houstons.

Well, we do have a pro team with pro affiliation [one and the same in the NFL book] and it does actually play in Houston. But I'll agree, the Irving Cowboys are the better team even if Dallas is too emabarrased to host them in their city. GO ARLINGTON!!! :P

Oh and 713 to 214, where do you get all of this hate from? Just from the Cowboys beating the then 3-7 Bucs, you think that Dallas (should be Irving) is the greatest city of all time. All this stuff about Houston wanting to be world class so they have to have a pro franchise is stupid. They had to the city's prestige, and that is it. Houston has enough prestige that Dallas will never have (hosted two Super Bowls, was hand picked by the U.S., Olympic Committee to re-bid for the 2016 Olympics, made it to the U.S. Final Four in 2000). The Dallas (Irving) Cowboys have won five championships, but that is it. The team that one those trophies in the 90's were full of thugs and cracC heads.

    Too funny

  9. No salt needed. You proved my point. Arlington will never host an NBA All Star game or Finals and Dallas will never host a Super Bowl, MLB All Star game, or World Series. Do you get the point now? Houston has hosted each of these.

Maybe because we actually have an MLB and NFL teams that play IN Houston? Maybe if Dallas got their own teams.... :P

BTW, when do the Irving Cowboys move to their new stadium in Arlington? :D

  10. I'm hoping that someone here might have a little information about the Beaconsfield. I know the maintenance fees are sky high ($.64 psf), and that the building is the process of having it's original hand operated elevators replaced. If anyone has additional information to add to this I would be highly appreciative. Thanks.

Are you interested in buying a unit?

  11. How would it not 'compliment' the entire city?

It does compliment the entire city. Throw a canoe in the water at beltway 8 and travel through natural beauty as you pass untouched woodlands, million dollar mansions, skyscrapers, an opera house, a university and end up in a world class port.

Just be thankful it was never cemented. Then it would compliment nothing more than those that could care less.

  12. Heights Yankee had always said it would make a killer bar/restaurant.

wish I would have thought of it years ago and made a proposal of some sort...

Yeah but someone said pictures have been taken so history is preserved. I think they also said something like, "This is just a warehouse, one like so many before it that have come and gone. Life goes on."

Yes indeed. Life does go on-perhaps with a lessor quality but it does seem to go on. -_-

  13. you need to hit Telwink!

Been there-done that. I'm not knocking it but the PS adds just the right amount of salt and pepper in the gravy and sometimes the meat is so tender you can cut it with a fork.

Besides, the ambiance of the pig motif plus the stylish waitresses is unsurpassed this side of Paris...Texas

  14. Maybe I am not paying attention hard enough but what is so different or special about the Heights location?

That's a long story but the short of it is: Walgreens wanted that plat to build a new store. They would not cooperate with anyone-I believe they wanted to place the dumpsters on Heights directly across from the rose garden.

CVS worked with the Heights Association and others. The placed the dumpsters on the south side of the building; moved the building closer to the corner of Yale and 20th and put the drive through on Yale. The building is set back about as far away as they could get from Heights so as not to intrude as much.

  15. People in vehicles also tend to be significantly wealthier than people on the LRT

And these people are disproportionately poor. The wealthy that must build up the LRT corridor don't want to ride with poor people

That's a pretty predictable response from someone as pompous and ill-informed as you tend to be. Why is everyone so surprised?
