  1. An update on the replacement house - it's not the gaudy mcmansion like most, at least:
  2. No exterior photos? Even from the street? That sounds restrictive! (in a legal way!)
  3. Unfortunately, I can't think of a city off the top of my head that has a litter problem like us (metro area). I was in Memphis a while back and I thought it was really clean and well-kept (maybe I was there on a good day? Only have been there once). St. Louis never struck me as dirty, either..
  4. ^I kind of gathered you were here now, but welcome back to Houston!
  5. I *think* it's 3998 Inverness -way back there near the railroad. HCAD says 1950.
  6. That's right - they're down by the Whole Foods area now. Holcombe getting closer to Braeswood is where I'm thinking of, but that's on the east side by MD Anderson.
  7. What part of the medical center? Holcombe has been rough for a while because of construction, so N. Braeswood might be a better option. I also find that Main (even though it's bad) is not nearly as bad as Fannin..
  8. Na, she maybe had a tiny bit of her conscience creeping up on her and it was out of guilt/wanting to run away Of course, people who enter an intersection without looking at both their light and presence of cars need to pay more attention, regardless of their obnoxious littering habits.
  9. Not in Montrose, but kind of near - a few from my family go to George Sayre at 3400 Bissonnet (next to Channel 13). I went to him for several years when I was younger and will probably start going again. The Dr. Oogle site lists the cost as moderate also.
  10. Older items can be tricky.. From the Copyright Office: Under the law in effect before 1978, copyright was secured either on the date a work was published with a copyright notice or on the date of registration if the work was reg
  11. I wouldn't go as far to say it's a part of Texas culture, but it is part of a lazy and ignorant culture that is (imo) growing and growing.. Next time you witness it, take down the plates, make, model, and location of the vehicle and report it here: http://www.dontmesswithtexas.org/report-a-litterer.php Not the greatest, but it's something.
  12. I would also recommend, if it isn't already, sleeving it in something like polypropylene or Melinex (like this). Good suggestions above - and if you make a fair attempt at locating a copyright holder with no luck (and say so), that's sufficient (until someone that legitimately holds it asks you to take it down). That's another thing - folks that claim copyright sometimes don't necessarily have it..
  13. Anyone know the story on this place? It was built around 1970 but demolished last year by its owners (who rebuilt on the land). It was fairly large (~3000 square feet) and valued well on paper (2008 HCAD link). http://www.arch-ive.org/demo/tealwood351_062808_2.jpg http://www.arch-ive.org/demo/tealwood351_062808.jpg http://www.arch-ive.org/demo/tealwood351_062808_13.jpg http://www.arch-ive.org/demo/tealwood351_062808_8.jpg http://www.arch-ive.org/demo/tealwood351_062808_3.jpg more: http://arch-ive.org/archive/351-tealwood/
  14. Thanks! I've been meaning to pick up a copy..
  15. This was in the October 1955 issue of Arts and Architecture. I wanted to find out more about it - where was it built, is it extant? It's kind of reminiscent of his Meadowglen house (and the lot size is similar): http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&...1&encType=1 more: http://arch-ive.org/archive/harwood-taylor/
  16. Good question about the copyright - the huge collection that the Center for American History at UT Austin received lists copyrights held by the Center. Individual photographs might be held by the estate of Bob Bailey (if there is one). I would contact the CAH to see if they have any information.. http://www.cah.utexas.edu/about/contact.php
  17. Dirk's is from the name of the guy that owned the Diedrich franchise here. He either ended his franchise agreement or Diedrich's stopped doing franchises (can't remember). There's also a Dirk's on the Rice campus, too (in the new Brochstein Pavilion, nicely competing with the nearby Rice coffeehouse ). ___________ edit - to the OP, off-topic, I played mahjongg for the first time yesterday and I'm hooked...!
  18. Does anyone have any recommendations for sites to find input on this? (Specifically the relation between major religious texts and when they were written, etc.)
  19. ^Does that include discounts? Also, fwiw, renting does not come with the burden of maintenance, tax payments, and other dues..
  20. The Iowa Supreme Court just unanimously approved same-sex marriage, overturning the 1998 law against it. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/04/us/04iow...rss&emc=rss
  21. Wow, a lot to catch up on here. I know I have a lot of reading to do, but the initial aspects of major presumptuousness and evangelism of Christianity are the utmost turn-offs. I won't let that stop me from at least learning more about the history, though. And what about the timeline of religious texts? Where does the writing/compilation of the bible fit in with others? What about similarities between them? For the above post by Orikal, though, option 1 does seem to be most logical, even in its oddity. Like John Burroughs said, "Man is, and always has been, a maker of gods. It has been the most serious and significant occupation of his sojourn in the world."
  22. Folks, let's keep this topic from dwindling in to a bickering match.
  23. What is your definition of blind faith? Am I taking this out of some other context, or are you serious? Seriously? I'd be interested in more information about that.. Disagree - well, what Niche said.
