  1. The exterior (where bums sleep) smells like a dog recently gave birth.

The lobby and 2nd floor aren't as bad as you'd think. No noticable odor, at least...doesn't mean that there isn't mold. Didn't see the basement, but I know that it has flooded and that the sumps weren't functioning at the time...

the first floor wasn't terrible (but it did smell), but it had rained recently, which made everything nice.

  2. it just pains me to see it sit...and sit...and sit.

it just keeps getting worse on the inside, and now that there's the reinforced boards on the first-level windows, the rot inside is surely baking into something really disgusting, from the basement up.

it's one of those buildings from which you don't want to be down-wind ^_^

  3. these days, even reclining your seat can be a nightmare for the person behind you (no matter who it is) on the "now-more-cramped-so-we-can-cram-more-people-and-get-ourselves-out-of-our-financial-mess" airlines.

i opt to drive everywhere these days if i can help it (unless it involves crossing a large mass of water)

  4. ooh buttons!

weingarten is in the consumer-driven industry, and most of the people who enjoy the lesser-homogeneity of this shopping center are its consumers, they feel that it IS weingarten's duty to please them to some extent.

also, at weingarten's 2006 second quarter earnings meeting, there was no report of business being bad, or needing a "boost" by doing something like this

I know it's more of an investment, but what about t-shirts?

there are t-shirts! (maybe just added)

  5. Unless it is a nudie bar being built 500 ft. from a church or school, I think Mr. Weingarten is well within his right to build what he pleases.

Again, if the protestors are so against it, then why not buy the property themselves and save it ? Why do they always have to put the burden on someone else ?

you're right, weingarten does have the liberty to build (almost) whatever they want - and they just might. it just makes them jerkies and to most, bad stewards of the property.

regarding the plan, it does exactly match what has been said recently by the tenants

  6. TV ALERT - 4pm

I haven't read this thread in the last 2 days, but wanted to tell you all that Channel 2 is running a story about a strong, new ally for this fight on the 4pm newscast. Sorry if this has already been posted.

just watched the story on 2. city council member, peter brown, is going to put an ordinance before the mayor to help preserve houston landmarks. peter brown is the perfect council member for this issue. check out his stats at this link.

excellent - thanks for the updates!

  7. Alright.. well, i'd be willing to accept that what i've heard may be the outdated info, and the plans the chronicle has could be more current.

But still.. if they're still early enough in the project.. lots can change as far as site concept is concerned.

I think given the fact the plans the chronicle has is almost 5 months old (according to sevfiv).. we also have to assume it could just as easily be way off as it is right on.

    march 2005, not this year

  8. Does anybody have any photos of the Paris Theater on OST in its heyday? Seems like its even larger than RO. If anybody were interested in preservation or restoration, it seems like that would be the place to do it. Its certainly not going to be torn down to make way for a highrise any time soon.

the ost theater? i haven't seen anything but current pictures - i am sure there's one around here somewhere...i'll keep snooping around :D

  9. What am I forgetting?

    william penn hotel

didn't they initially turn The Bellaire Theater into a (now defunct) Discovery Zone?

yep - now i think it is part of the whole foods

Keep the pressure up. I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them.

    i share those sentiments...

i talked with some of the news crew tonight at the theater, and they seemed to feel the same

  10. Yes, Channel 2 did a short piece last night. Nothing that hasn't been discussed in this thread. They mentioned petitions being available. I'll sign them.

    Where are the petitions?

    http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/riveroaks/

And what does the River Oaks Theater have to do with historic preservation? As far as I know, it has not been declared a historical landmark.

just because something isn't declared a landmark doesn't mean it doesn't qualify to be one (it does qualify to be on the national register of historic places), or people don't want it to be preserved.

weingarten would have to fill out the application, though
