  1. Yea since we're not in spanish colonial times, why build a building that looks like a it came from that time. That's as ridiculous as buying a new Ford car that looks like the Model T. I don't understand why people can accept, computers, cell phones, TVs, cars, planes, electronics that are contemporary but when it comes to buildings they want to build crappy "stylistic" charactatures from the past.
  2. Architecture lags behind the rest of the economy. The crisis just hit, so big projects are still going, but once those are finished, architects will get hit. Just delayed. And when it hits, it'll be hard. The last time it happened was in the 90's. Terrible time to be an architecture graduate.
  3. I blame HGTV. They only show crappy designs and everyone is brainwashed by them.
  4. I haven't read the whole thread but wanted to share with you guys that you can see the building even from US59 south! Quite clearly too. Its amazing that I-10 is so close when you have some reference point! We need more tall buildings around Houston!
  5. Just for the record, I live in a 1937 2100SF bungalow in West U, not a 4000SF house. I don't have a tiny mortgage or a big one, its paid off and as well, my electricity bill is huge because, its an old house. My house's worth is equivalent to a 4000SF house in the burbs though, so I guess I have that.
  6. Just as some people find living in a 1200SF house with kids vulgar.
  7. Not that I'm complaining because I love the forum. But this forum has got way to many sub-forums, which makes it hard to navigate, unless you're committed. The casual reader probably will post on a certain sub-forum and not go anywhere else. Just an observation.
  8. Well with the general population of Houston, such as the original poster, can you blame Houston, for being a "backwater" in terms of architecture? No educated clients = no cool architecture.
  9. Gosh, everyone here is on such a high horse! Of course everyone wants bigger. What's wrong with that? I attribute it to better building techniques and technology to support it. A 4000 SF house can be made pretty energy efficient compared to say 20 years ago. Of course not as efficient as a 2000 SF house built today, but so what?
  10. Ummm, your use of the word modern means contemporary. Its just more logical to use because modern was an actual period in architectural history. In which case they would have been "modern" in style but actually, they're just contemporary architecture. Sorry I offended you, but since you readily admit that you know nothing of architecture, why so be defensive?
  11. They are all different. To architects, its the spaces and the way buildings are put together that makes them interesting. You just noticed the superficial stuff.
  12. I finally got power!!!!! Man you don't really know how good you have it until you lose it for a few days.
  13. There are several billboards/signage that have had been blown clear to expose the previous signage underneath. Its a bit of history. I've seen a Texas Commerce sign under a blown out Chase sign on 59, a Computize sign, and a Sam White Motor City billboard on 59/A90! Its like I'm a teenager again commuting to UH! Well anyway, I think its cool. I'll try to take pictures.
  14. CITY OF WEST UNIVERSITY PLACE Message sent - 9/18/2008 Hurricane Ike Message 7 This is an important public information announcement from the City of West University Place. The time is 10:00 AM on Thursday, September 18, 2008. This is Michael Ross, City Manager and Public Information Officer. The following are the latest updates from the City: 1. CenterPoint Energy says that 800 new workers with equipment from out of State are arriving to the West U area today. All of these will continue to work on this area until power is restored. 2. The City has just received an ice station for West U residents without power. The ice station is parked on Amherst behind the police station. Entry to this station will occur from Rice Boulevard to Auden Street to Amherst Street. For public safety reasons Auden Street is blocked at the Fire Station. 3. At the current time storm debris collection is scheduled to begin tomorrow September 19th. The City will be notifying residents on streets where parking will be prohibited to facilitate this process. Your patience and compliance during this period will greatly assist the City and its contractors in their efforts to help our residents. 4. Routine solid waste collection has resumed. Only household garbage will be collected. 5. Effective immediately the City will accept recycling at the recycling center on Dincans. Curbside recycling is temporarily suspended until further notice. If you have questions regarding this matter please contact the City of West University Place at 713/668-4441. The City
  15. Still no power at my house but lot of houses have power. Most businesses around West U are open and are packed. All the kids are out of school for the rest of the week and everyone is out playing or at restaurants eating. City has contracted out debris pick up for today. They'll even pick up broken fences! They also had trash pickup for the whole city yesterday and today, I guess the stink from the rotting food was too much for the city. They are also slowly but surely picking up the branches. West U doesn't have heavy trash pick up but they do have branch pick up so we have trucks that mulch. They started that on Monday or Tuesday I think. Regular trash pick up starts Thursday but no recycle pickup. The recycle center on Dinkins will be open starting Thursday, I'm sure it will be overflowing with plastic water bottles. The city website sucks ass though. Hardly any updates. But I did sign up for the emergency call list and they have been calling me with pre-recorded messages.
  16. West U reporting. Drove around today and everyone has cleaned their yards and piled branches by the curb. Lots of blocks have power but unfortunately, my block isn't one of them. Lots of traffic light are totally destroyed. Its going to be a nightmare come this week as we all know how all way stops work in Houston. Kroger open and some restaurants. My favorite breakfast place, the Buffalo Grill was open! Overall didn't see house damage but lots of trees and branches down. I think we did well. Not at all what the news had me to believe would happen. I really feared total devastation. The silver lining is that I think it brought the city together. Lots of my neighbors were out cleaning and everyone was helpful and offered assistance. Galvanized the city, hope it lasts. That's it, hope all you guys are allright and safe!
  17. Power finally quit. I'm outta here. Be safe everyone. See you on the other side of the eye.
  18. Didn't stop my kids and wife from sleeping!
  19. Who is staying up all night?
  20. West U still here. Had lots of breaks in power but has come back one. So far. No power across the street. Been watching the sky for those awesome displays of green flashes. The are frequent. Still gusting. Should go to sleep but since the power is on, I'm watching TV. ATT Uverse still working! I wish people would fill out their location on the profile. Makes it easier.
