    Well, the Dynamo had exactly ZERO sellouts...why do they merit a new stadium? Especially one that would be footed by taxpayers? The Dynamo's best-attended game was their first game: 25,462. They drew 23,107 for the conference final. UH had 3 games this year with better attendance than any Dynamo game: Grambling State - 27,302 Oklahoma State - 28,260 Southern Miss - 31,818 And we do that without all the free press that the Houston Dynamo garners from the Chronicle and local TV and radio.     UH just approved (last week?) a new $99 million dorm/academic/retail building. Going from memory here, but I believe it will be 500,000 sf, include 700 rooms (or was it 700 beds?), several lecture halls, and retail components. It will be graduate student housing, and will be built near the Law School and Bauer College of Bidness. If I understand correctly, it will be built on the site of the existing "Y" building (which is the old WWII-era engineering lab "barn" between the Engineering, Law and Bidness buildings. The construction was to begin in summer 2007 and be complete in 2009. This is the first phase of the Master Plan that will double the existing square footage of UH's current infrastructure. The Master Plan will also double the existing on-campus housing, up to 11,000 residents, and allow UH to increase its enrollment to 45,000 (from the existing 35,000). Other parts of the Master Plan that I remember are that Cullen and Holman will be closed to vehicular traffic. Light rail and a new road will come through the parking lots next to Robertson Stadium (parallel to Holman). The strip along the light rail and new road will be lined with mixed use retail/residential and will be the heart of campus life.

    I'd definitely patronize an Alamo Drafthouse at Gulfgate! Right now we go to the Edwards in Greenway Plaza. It's easy to get to, but I dislike having to pay to park to go to the movies. It is a nice theater, though.

    LSD and the Texas Cyclone...I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my life! Another favorite (and more innocent) moment was getting to "captain" the River of No Return!

    As I understand it, when the owner of the original NOTSUOH bought the "Home of Easy Credit" building, it came as-is. The place was filled with shoes, lamps, miscellaneous couches, desks and chairs and all the other clutter you're talking about. The guy figured it was easier to just leave it as-is than to clean it all up, so.....that's how NOTSUOH got its charm! Here's to laziness! I haven't been to Clark's, but I assume all the cluter is gone? If so, there's no way to re-create the original vibe of NOTSUOH.

    Maybe the "Houston Dynamo of Sugar Land" would work? Hey, if the "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim" can do it, why not us? (Actually, I think that's the stupidest idea I've ever heard...freakin' freaks out there in LaLa land.)

    UH took over 10,000 fans to Fort Worth for the Fort Worth Bowl in December 2005. I understand that we took 4,000-5,000 to the SMU game in Dallas on Saturday. And we took over 10,000 to Memphis for the 1996 Liberty Bowl (UH outnumbered Syracuse fans at least 3-1 at that game...and about 6-1 on Beale Street afterwards!) I also look for UH to take well over 10,000 to Memphis this December for the Liberty Bowl (yeah, I'm jumping ahead a little bit...first we gotta win the CUSA Championship Game here at Robertson on December 1st).

    So it's not the owner of the original NOTSUOH? Will we still be able to play chess with the homeless? I always had a good time at NOTSUOH. It was a good place to hang out and watch the "beautiful people" as they walked the streets with next to nothing on in the 40-degree weather. Fun to watch folks "suffer for style".

    I'm pretty sure the UH band was there, or at least a UH pep band. I watched a little bit of the game, and the "Eat 'Em Up" was definitely being played. I wonder what the Dynamo crowd's supposed to cheer for that one? "Eat 'em up, eat 'em up, Go Dy-na-mo!" ??? BTW, I'll be there at the UH-SMU game in Dallas this weekend as well. I thought it was very cool that both the Coogs* and the Dynamo won their respective Western Conference/Division Championships this weekend at Robertson. A very good weekend for the ol' Rob. *note: the Coogs haven't technically won the Western Division of CUSA yet, but they're in the drivers' seat. Win the next two (@SMU, @Memphis), both games that we'll be favored in, and we win the CUSA Western Division, AND we host the CUSA Championship Game at Robertson on December 1. Thats's just so's you Dynamo fans know...if you miss the Robertson experience, or just want to relive some glory there, come on out to the CUSA Championship game on Friday, December 1st!!!

    Just to get the thread off-track again... What's wrong with the current set-up? Why build a taxpayer funded or subsisized stadium, when Robertson serves perfectly well? I've never been to a Dynamo game, but I've been to nearly every game at Robertson since UH moved out of the Astrodome, and I think Robertson Stadium is a great facility in a great location. (Much better than the Astrodome experience, that's for sure). Do Dynamo fans agree? Do you enjoy the Robertson Stadium experience, or are there significant complaints about the facility? If you enjoy it at Robertson, why spend taxpayer money on another stadium? If it's 100% privately funded, then build away.

    $6?!? It's $7.00/beer at UH games (football/women's soccer) at Robertson Stadium! Why are UH fans getting screwed?!? I haven't had a single beer inside Robertson Stadium since they raised the prices this year. Even at last year's $5.50/beer I'd drink 2 or 3 a game. I've had many illicit Jack & cokes in the stadium this year, and many, many, many beers while tailgating, but I haven't bought a $7.00 beer yet. I can buy two six-packs of Lone Star tallboys for $7.00...why would I pay $7.00 for a single Bud Light when I could drink 12 good beers for less?!? I wonder how much concession $$$ they're losing over that decision. Anyways...for all those who are going to the Dynamo game this weekend, why not make a full weekend of it and hit the UH-Tulsa game on Saturday at 2:30 pm? It's the last regular season home game for Kevin Kolb (#7 in NCAA D-1A history in total yards...he'll be #5 all-time by the end of the game), not to mention the implications of the game. The winner of UH-Tulsa (the two top-ranked teams in CUSA) will more than likely host the CUSA Championship game later this year! Should be a hell of a game...Tulsa is a Top 25 level team (ranked #26 right now), and UH has the firepower to knock them off! Eat 'em up, COOGS!!! (and Dynamo!)

    It may not be the racial make-up of Pearland, but it's definitely the racial makeup of the area. I bet all the black people are asking themselves where all these white people came from!

    Here's the reason I've been given to explain why development bypassed the area between the South Loop and the South Belt: HISD HISD is just a tougher sell than Pasadena ISD, Pearland ISD and Clear Creek ISD which are all right around the Beltway. And I think Danax speaks a lot of truth. Many white people are afraid of living near large populations of black people. And for that matter, white people tend not to want to live near large populations of Latinos as well. It's amazing in this day and age that white flight still exists...but it does. Being a white guy in an all-black neighborhood, I'm constantly amazed at the attitudes of many of my white co-workers and friends. To hear them speak, I might as well be living in the middle of Darfur.

    There's still a Wyatts Cafeteria on Griggs just south of OST. For all I know it's the last one left on earth. We used to eat at the one on Spencer Highway in Pasadena all the time when I was younger.

    Actually, the Riverside Terrace neighborhood was developed by wealthy Jews who weren't allowed to buy in River Oaks due to RO deed restrictions. Some of the homes in Riverside Terrace may compare with River Oaks, but RT is not in RO...they're several miles from each other.

    Actually, we've got a public parking lot under the interchange (Metro Park & Ride lot). How do you think that corner of the Loop would look if the trees were replaced with another Wal-Mart, or another Meyerland Plaza? I'd rather see the trees. Judging by the posts above, it sounds like maybe I'm the only one that ever notices those trees...

    The property has severe floodplain issues, which is why is hasn't been developed. The Meyers are open to developing it...I'm sure there will be a huge uproar when they do. I think most folks enjoy seeing the little bit of nature there as they fly around the Loop. It would be nice to see the property preserved in its undeveloped state.

    It should be noted that Donald Barthelme the Architect (and former UH architecture prof) was the father of Donald Barthelme the Author (and former UH Creative Writing prof). When I first read the post above, I found it pretty amazing that one man could be an award winning architect AND one of the nation's most celebrated authors at the same time!

    I think Alpine, TX is still that way. I know for a fact it was like that 2 or 3 years ago.
