  1. Probably the same reason that the Dynamo want to get out of Robertson Stadium...too many conflicts with other events. The Dynamo want complete control over the facility. How is TSU's on-campus football stadium working out? I remember when I was at UH, TSU played their home games at Robertson.
  2. You may find this website of interest as you research Brays Bayou watershed flooding: http://www.projectbrays.org/index.asp HCFCD is working on over 70 projects throughout the Brays Bayou watershed. According to the website, channel modifications are underway between the mouth of Brays and Lawndale. Next phases of channel modifications are Calhoun to Ardmore (basically UH to 288) and Holcombe to Braeswood (Med Center). HCFCD is also underway on the Willow Waterhole Detention Basin at S Post Oak and S Main. That's where they bought up a bunch of old apartments, demolished them, and will replace them with 280 acres of detention basins that include parks and recreation features. I also recall hearing that part of Project Brays is the replacement of something like 50 bridges over Brays Bayou to increase capacity of the bayou. These are long-term projects...think on the order of a decade, not weeks or months. [EDIT: I guess me and travelguy are on the same wavelength this morning. He's just on a faster wave.]
  3. As I recall, it had to do with public access, not necessarily development of the park. I think the MacGregor family said that the land was given to the city on the condition that it be open to the public...but the city put locked gates on the only driveways into the parcel in question (between MLK and the bayou). I too noticed the "for sale" signs on the property a few weeks ago, and thought it was pretty interesting. This dispute came up several years ago, as I recall. Obviously someone was VERY forward-thinking back then, since that corridor down MLK from Wheeler will be served by light rail in a couple years. It's a very beautiful piece of property...a very scenic area, with MacGregor Park right across the street. I hope it's not junked up with the typical McDonald's, Jack-in-the-Box, dry cleaners, income tax prep and cell phone store strip development.
  4. I should probably give the photographer, Stephen Pinchback, his due. Great website, lots of UH athletics pics: http://www.pbase.com/carboncopy/root
  5. You mean this setup? The one with the great view of the downtown skyline? [/blatant Coog plug]
  6. If you look at their criteria, I don't see how NOLA beats Houston... Rankings for the ten best restaurant cities in the U.S. were based on: 1. Overall number of restaurants above the fast food level. 2. Number of fine dining restaurants with national and international standing. 3. Solid representation of regional American food. 4. A wide segment of second-tier restaurants that would include seafood, steakhouses, and independently chef-owned restaurants. 5. Breadth and depth of ethnic restaurants, especially if the city has neighborhood such as a Chinatown. 6. A significant number of neigborhood restaurants where the locals tend to eat out regularly. 7. A well-traveled clientele that regards eating out in that city one of the real pleasures of going there.
  7. 35,100 + 7,785 + 11,974 + 2,183 = 57,042 students in the UH SYSTEM. There are 35,100 enrolled at the central campus. Of those 35,100 I believe somewhere on the order of 5,000 live on campus. UH has plans to double that number in the next 10 years...they will break ground on a new 1,000 bed dorm later this year. Most UH alumni will agree that UH desparately needs more beds on campus. That will do a lot to help school spirit now and in the future...and spirited students turn into spirited (and giving) alumni! I attend a lot of sporting events at UH and I work out there regularly...I would have to say that there's a lot more school spirit today than there was when I was there in the first half of the 90's. I'm very happy to see that...
  8. Isn't it a Chase Bank now? That would make me wonder if wasn't originally a Texas Commerce Bank. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Texas Commerce eventually became Chase. Was TCB morphed from something previous?)
  9. If you asked a cab to come to the Marquis (or Marquee, or Marq*E or however you want to spell it) without any additional direction, they may have wondered were you asking for them to come to any of the following: A.Marquis Family Dentistry 281-656-2200 6037 N Fry Rd Ste Ste Houston TX 77002 B.Marquis Jet Partners 281-855-4241 Houston TX 77002 C.Carrie R Marquis 713-227-9600 440 Louisiana Ste 1450 Houston TX 77002-1691 D.The Marquis At Bellaire Leasing Office 713-349-8855 5454 Newcastle Ofc Houston TX 77081-2245 E.The Marquis At Bellaire 713-349-8866 5454 Newcastle Ofc Houston TX 77081-2245 F.Marquis II (This is what I thought you were talking about at first, especially when you said you asked for a CAN) 713-522-2090 2631 Bissonnet St Houston TX 77005-1303 G.Marquis Litigation Service 713-688-9300 6815 Northampton Way Houston TX 77055-7618 H.Marquis Messengers 713-862-2801 1289 N Post Oak Rd Houston TX 77055-7267 I.Marquis Distributors 713-941-6122 7999 Hansen Rd Houston TX 77061-3481 J.Marquis Messengers 713-957-2117 1289 N Post Oak Rd Houston TX 77055-7267 Hotel Marquis & Suites 281-446-9131 6115 Will Clayton Parkway Humble TX 77373
  10. So how long before my neighborhood is the "Southeast TMC Campus"?!? We were joking about that with a neighbor the other day...just as the 3rd Ward west of 288 has become the "Museum District", it's just a matter of time until South Union is the "Med Center." TMC is definitely moving south, though...it's easier (and cheaper) for it to expand south than it is to expand north.
  11. That is indeed the view looking out of the north end zone at Robertson Stadium (ex-Jeppesen Stadium). The houses along the street there are on Scott Street. The trees there just beyond the parking lot would now be the UH practice fields, along Holman...or maybe Holman cuts right through where those trees were. It looks like there's a gas station on Scott in that photo (red roof on the left side of the picture). I wonder if that's now the Popeye's at Scott and Holman? FWIW, that Popeye's will be demolished in the next year or two for the light rail down Scott Street.
  12. There was also a Skate Ranch on Blackhawk in the Sagemont area. I spent many days there as a child doing the Hokey Pokey, the Bunny Hop, drinking suicides, playing Tron, and listening to "Eye of the Tiger", "Looking for Love in all the Wrong Places", and "Bomb Iran". Funny how history works...if the Skate Ranch was still around, I bet they'd still be playing "Bomb Iran" today. I rollerskated pretty much exclusively at the Skate Ranch as a kid...so much so that it was high school before I realized that not all roller rinks were called "Skate Ranches". I thought that was just a generic term for a roller rink...like, "let's go find a skate ranch and go roller skating."
  13. Houston's "native style"?!? Cabeza de Vaca described the Karankawas as tall (6 ft common), well-built, muscular, the men stark naked, with lower lip and nipples pierced, covered in alligator grease (against mosquitos), happy and generous, with amazing physical prowess. "... they go naked in the most burning sun ....- in winter they go out in early dawn to take a bath ... breaking the ice with their body...".
  14. It's "Speculative". Betting on the come. Meaning they're proceeding with construction without any have firm commitments on leasing out the space yet. In other words, they feel that the market is going to be strong enough that they'll find people to fill their new building... I'm sure the Niche or others can explain all the whys and wherefores about whether this is smart, dumb, good news, bad news, interesting, etc.
  15. To be blunt, the answer to the first part of your question is fear and/or hatred of Jews, and the answer to the second part of your question is fear and/or hatred of blacks. I still think it's a great part of town...just underestimated by the general public because of the Third Ward label. There are certainly some old homes that have fallen into disrepair, but there are also some real treasures there. It's a good middle- to upper-class neighborhood...and probably one of the tightest-knit communities in the Houston area.
  16. A general word of advice: don't ever smoke a cigarette around the Greyhound bus station. If you're seen with a cigarette, you'll be the target of hundreds of requests for smokes. You can easily lose a pack and a half between your car and the front door of the Greyhound station unless you know how to say "no".
  17. Some additional variety only a 5-minute train ride away? I'd say it would definitely help Midtowners.
  18. Just my opinion here, but I think a *serious* architecture forum would be pretty lame, and wouldn't get nearly the number of visits that HAIF does. I doubt that even serious architects discuss only architecture 100% of the time. Anyhow...to get back on topic: "I'm glad that the Pavilions have finally broken ground."
  19. Midtown, you better hope we don't meet in a dark shopping center in Kingwood...my tattoos aren't just an idle boast!
  20. I've never been ashamed to ask for a "doggie bag"...even in the nicest restaurants. Hell, if I'm paying good $$$ for it, I'm gonna enjoy it, whether it's at the restaurant or back home sitting in front of the TV! Leaving food on the table is the same thing as throwing $$$ on the ground, as far as I'm concerned.
  21. There's still a Picadilly's at Almeda Mall...I ate there with my family for Thanksgiving last year. Same ol' same ol'. Not bad, but its quality doesn't match up to Luby's since Luby's upgraded their menu. Of course, the prices don't match Luby's higher prices either. And the Wyatt's on Griggs is still open. I have never eaten there, but I drive by it regularly. I might just have to stop by for a meal this afternoon, then get some hair at Modern City!
  22. The grackle will survive. Don't worry about them, you should be more concerned about the fate of the human race... FEAR THE GRACKLE!!!
