  1. Looking at this image makes it clear which way the Med center is heading. This land is between Fannin and Bertner south of Brays Bayou, and across the street from the future TMC3. This land has to be very valuable with all of the new developments under construction, or about to break ground surrounding it. This shot makes it clear how little development has occurred in this segment of the ever expanding TMC. Just south of this area lies O.S.T. which has already been absorbed by satellite clinics, hospitals research centers, dental college, Proton Therapy center, and many more related businesses. With TMC3 in the offing, I'm sure this land is very desirous.
  2. I think you're right. I think they were able to make a deal on property that has great potential and they just wanted to secure it until they come up with a plan. In that location they could definitely do a great mixed use development. With so many people either living in the area or just visiting for games conventions the park or just hanging out there are so many unsupported needs in the area. It will definitely be something to keep our ears to the ground for.
  3. Its a great old structure on the banks and I thought that someone was going to restore that building at some point. I didn't realize that was its name. Thanks for the info!
  4. Perhaps somewhere between Midways East River project and Minute Maid. There is an old site on Buffalo Bayou east of the old Elysian Viaduct that looks to be an old substation or something related to the power grid. I don't know how far away a power station can be located to serve the east side of downtown, but with the Toyota center, GBCC, Minute Maid and all of the big hotels on that side of town I'm sure they have huge needs for power.
  5. Good find Rechlin! This is great. I can't wait to see what it looks like with the first floor reclaimed. Did someone purchase the building and restoring it. Does anyone know who is responsible?
  6. We have dreamed, hoped and wished that Houston would become more urban like our big brothers New York, and Chicago. Now I'm sure that in all major urban areas especially the two I mentioned there are hundreds of residential towers that are much closer together. We are just going to have to come to the realization that at some point views might vanish. Especially in high density growth areas like Uptown, or downtown.
  7. The drive north on Post Oak, from Whole Foods on is going to be a wall of non stop glass almost through the bend.
  8. So are we going to call the area around the historic district NoDoz?
  9. As I have said in the past, I think it will settle down some. The bar scene is always moving. I think the warehouse area east of Hutchins St Emauel will eventually become a hot spot. There is such a collection of old buildings many sitting empty now but as things heat up in Eado, and especially if the freeway does come through it will have to grow further east. I think with time more retail service type spaces will open in the Market Square area. Who knows how long it will take. This is the third time in my life that this area has been the party scene.
  10. I just wish they could solve the flooding issues with that part of town. I think if they went ahead with the White Oak Bayou bypass over to the eastern side of town to connect with Buffalo Bayou they would help the western and northwestern side of downtown. I also believe that the county buidings that are built near Louisiana and Travis should be taken out as they constrict the flow of water through downtown. They are literally built to the waters edge leaving no room for excess drainage.
  11. Maybe they chose the that site due to parking for concerts.
  12. Some of them did however some of them closed due to lack of business. Some blamed the possible rail line for their demise. Thats just a wonky area of Montrose.
  13. Just trust these people. Its going to be fantastic. They're saving all of the important architectural detailing that was important. The southern side was a very plain back of the house walls and really had no modern elements. It's going to be fine. Rice and Hines aren't going to screw it up. You couldn't ask for two more conscientious groups. I mean Rice founded the RDA which is all about good sound architecture.
  14. That 10 million is just part of the 29 million dollars that this project is expected to spend to bring this to fruition. The Downtown Redevelopment Authority is also giving 10 million, and Houston First Corp. is giving 5 million. This is a great beginning to the new theater district master plan. I cant wait to see what they have in store for that part of downtown. They have the opportunity to really pull all of it together and make that part of downtown really special. Now that the Historic district has become such an important area with all of the new residential thats been built, or currently under construction, this will be a welcome improvement. I also see more retail starting to pop up around the area. It's all heading in the right direction.
  15. lus the north end has most of the history and older buildings that are important to the fabric of downtown. It used to be that people thought that set of main was not good but as you can see it is now the hotbed of activity both in stadiums parks, convention center and most of the new hotels. It's also developing quite a neighborhood feel with all of the residential. Historic and arts districts are right there with all of it's venues and gateway to Buffalo Bayou.
  16. Thats a great shot. Whats striking is you can see how much of mid town is now predominantly 5-8 story complexes or taller. It would be interesting see an aerial view of this same area from say 2000. The density stretches from just north of W. Dallas and the Post properties all the way to 59, the Ion and Fiesta. Now we need one facing the other way and we can make our own panoramas. Seems to me to be an impressive amount of infill in less than 20 years.
  17. The photos are all taken from the southern view. If you view from the east west or north you realize they have saved the most modern aspects of the building. I would also imagine that hideous brick will with get taken down or covered.
  18. I think it is. It says block 42 and its the same # of floors as the Preston.
  19. Went down today to check on the progress of the Texas Tower, first hand, and it is impressive in person. The way the building sits on the block makes it look overwhelming when approaching from the east or west. It is massive. I also like the detail of the notches in the Travis and Milam sides of the building. It will make adefining crease in the facade of the building, while breaking up the east and west sides, that will really have an impact when the building is glazed and topped out. This is going to be a very impressive structure and will definitely change the overall dynamics of the surrounding blocks.
