  1. ...from 1903 Houston Directory.
  2. If it has to go the townhouse way... then I wish the developers would have considered the original house design in their new plans. The old home could have been incorporated, to respect the original architect's vision. The grounds are beautiful... too bad that couldn't be considered, as well.
  3. The mall that eventually was built on that great expanse of field that grew out of the Pasadena Foley's, on Southmore...I never heard of it ever being called Strawberry Mall... was that a nickname? Pasadena Town Square was what I heard.
  4. http://www.aia.org/aiaucmp/groups/aia/documents/document/aiab095606.pdf I especially like the ideas on pages 54 > ... thoughtful placement of new construction, to blend with existing residential blocks.
  5. I don't altogether dislike this building. The side facade is rather nice. I see those colors used quite a bit, in new construction.
  6. Yeah... I could be wrong on the location. I remember the name Studebaker's. I think that may have also been the first location of The Rose, which was north of Westheimer, originally.
  7. Cooters was at one time, later, called Bentleys. And yes, it had a full-sized car inside. Cowboys was a nice place, became R&R. I had work - happy hours there, when that was popular. The Rose was on Richmond, somewhere before Gessner (i couldn't find it on the maps) and later moved into the old Windsor Theater (Galleria area) along with some other clubs (all under one roof). It was right by The Mason Jar Restaurant, other end of the strip mall as Cooters (whatever name it was called) back then. The Post Oak Ranch was a nice one story building. It was a treed property with a deck, facing the 610 Loop. Torn down, replaced by a hotel, La Quinta (or something like that). Im guessing.
  8. nice photo... I have to say once again, I love those old theater ramp designs better than the new stair ones.
  9. I never saw the inside of the Alabama as a movie theater. I saw it when it was a bookstore. I grew up with a few of the old theaters, so I can say that it was, at the time I frequented it, sympathetically re-purposed. The entrance was beautiful. I haven't seen it since it changed owners.
  10. Alabama-That carpeted staircase was beautiful...such a shame. Is the balcony gone?
  11. So, it looks like the horse trails (that originally ran through much of that land) next to the polo field are still used. Anyone seen any lately? I've never spotted any from the parkway.
  12. http://houston.culturemap.com/news/restaurants-bars/04-09-12-restaurants-buck-the-alabama-theater-interior-demolition-trend-and-hold-onto-houston-history/ ... somewhat related to this topic... old haunts around the Alabama.
  13. Ok... I see it now. Yes, still there, with a round gazebo turret. GoogleEarth took me to the 601 Bayridge Rd. house, originally.
  14. Oh no... not that Sears! is it still open? it has the coolest sign.
  15. The house in post #5 does not look like the one located at 811 Bayridge Rd. Am I missing something? I'm familiar with that estate, but didn't realize Hofheinz bought it from the original owners.
  16. Wow... I've never heard of this Huckster House... GoogleEarth takes me to a (newer than 1960's) neighborhood in League City. Got any details on the location? Looks like it was maybe on the West side of the island... those low trees.
  17. Thank you for sharing this news... what a loss, such a humanitarian.
  18. Please...don't shoot the messenger.

  19. I was just using Frostown as an example... and yes, I do.
  20. ... well, not exactly a church, but a Catholic school.. such a nice design. Benson St.
  21. isuredid or someone... do you have any idea what this buildings name was? It's very old.I recently ran across it on GoogleEarth, was intrigued.
  22. Point taken... I just think they could have chosen a better sounding name, and one you would instantly know how to pronounce, like East Side, East Park, etc. East Town...or a historical name, maybe the original landowner, like...Frostown.
  23. http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/hpsxc ... are you asking if Old Sixth Ward is part of the Heights old residential area? Looks like from the link, the northern boundary for sixth ward was Washington Ave. I have seen one boundary on an old Heights map, showing it going down to Washington Ave. But, I would think no is the answer. http://digital.lib.uh.edu/collection/p15195coll35/item/5/show/4 Heights Map The big question nowadays seems to be, which Heights? joke.
  24. I looked for an old street name or original land owner name... nothing found, yeah, Jefferson Davis...have to agree with that theory. Forgot about that.
  25. Torimask- Cleburnes is still there... second location. The first location (on Cleburne) is rumored to have been a speakeasy. It's one of my favorite topics on HAIF. It was recently painted white, much to my disappointment. Great list, thanks for sharing. DebbieW - Welcome to HAIF... yes, I am familiar with that McDonalds. I took HCC classes in a '70's (4 story?) office bldg. (now demolished) across from it.
