  1. 3. Across the street from me, they used recylced bricks to create a large grid pattern, and filled in between the grids with white slate gravel. Cheap, I like the look, and it helps to drain water. Plus, no digging up concrete when the inevitable sewer line failure happens. I'm actually going with this method in front of my garage (which is currently broken-up old aggregate concrete).

just watch out for small gravel/rocks. i've seen some really nice wood floors just ruined by small rocks stuck in shoes.

  2. I say spend spend spend--live live live.

Spending is fine as long as you can differentiate between a need and a want. I know i blow money sometimes (HDTV purchase) but in general I am a saver. I was able to not work for more than a yr and was still living a comfortable life. many of my friends were shocked that i could do it without borrowing money, etc. for me it's more of a shock if you couldn't do it. I think everyone should have at least 6 months living expenses at their disposal for use in an emergency.

  3. The discussed tradeoffs would be community participation in the form of youth clinics and community involvement. I could not imagine the city contributing anything more and if they did I think it would be a bad decision. In talks with other places for the stadium it has been made clear there would be no financial support from the cities. At least when I spoke with several of the Pearland city councilmen thats what they told me.

I've heard the team was responsible for stadium but they want cities to help with the practice fields which will end up being for the public's use as well. last night, councilmember wiseman was mentioning the proposed park fee for the various youth groups to use the fields. I know the city expects them to maintain the fields now. many have spent thousands (50k for one park i know of) for lights and now the city wants to charge them to use the park. unfortunately for most houstonians, all parks are not equal.

  4. Unless there is some statement in your contract that prevents him from selling the same plans to other customers, you're probably out of luck. It'd be difficult to prove that there are any damages incurred to you from his having sold your plans to others. In fact, you might consider yourself flattered.

I'd have to agree with Niche here. sounds like vague language will hurt your cause.

  5. based on the fact that most medical staff do very early shifts to mid day to late night... if you leave SD at 8:00 am the most of the rush is down unless there is an accident...

not everyone that lives down there is in the medical industry so there is a rush hr down there too. my aunt works for hisd in town and commented over the holidays that rush hr is just getting worse so she leaves earlier.

  6. As far as the discussions with the Dynamo the current belief is that if they reached an agreement all the City would contribute to the mix would be tha land. The Dynamo would be responsible for all construction costs.

All they would contribute is the land? land isn't cheap. I'll bet the the city would be required to put in money for some of the practice fields too. there are just too many unknowns at this point.

  7. Thanks for the reply. There was no odor associated with it. I could only hear the sound coming from the kitchen and washer drains. We also saw a puddle of water forming around the driveway sidewalk everytime this sound occurred.

the puddle of water sounds interesting because it should be a closed system. but like the previous poster said, snake it out yourself or call a plumber to do it. if after a few weeks it happens again, your lines may be older and made out of clay. these crack and get roots in them very easily which blocks flow.

a coworker here told me that he had problems once and the cable company had ended up drilling through his main drain when installing cable in the neighborhood. he found the problem himself, called the cable company and they actually paid to fix it.

  8. We would like a good sized home (3-4 bedroom) with a little personality and a decent to good sized yard for the dogs. And we're looking for somewhere that would make the commute as painless as possible for him.

Everything that we're seeing either has crime stats that scare me or is a community with nothing but cookie cutter brick homes with no trees. Is it possible to find a safe place with a little style in our price range?

I guess we have champagne tastes and a Coca-Cola budget. Are we doomed?

i think if you're willing to do some updates to the home you'll have many options. if crime is that much of an issue for you, then you may have some problems.

Very convenient to 288/BW8 and 15 minutes to Med Center

that must be at off-peak times because the last time i came up 288 during a morning rush hr, it was backed up!

  9. yep, thats right because I was looking at pictures last night and our christmas tree was down and standing by the house covered in ice and snow. If it was 1972 the tree would still be in the house. It was still my sophomore year though. Thanks Devonhart.

the '73 snow was the only "snow" day we got off while i was in school. i remember building a snowman in the front yard.

Man, I don't think any kindergartner walks home alone from school now.

from the field trips i remember going on, i don't remember the buses having a/c either!

  10. But that was Culberson's, Aftonag's and musicman's intent all along: insist on the impossible in order to deny us the funds to achieve the will of the people who voted FOR an LRT line from Wheeler to Hillcroft. Their choice to blindly vote-or not-without all the facts availible is just another indication of an increacingly lazy electorate.

Nice that you can read our minds Ms. Cleo. ;)

  11. overall houston is not as racist as other big cities but it definitely exists. i have personally experienced racial tension in houston.

one incident was in seabrook about 5 to 10 yrs ago in seabrook classic cafe. i went there when the KKK was having a meeting. the waitress ended up slipping me a napkin that said "watch out they are all around you"

most of the other times it just involves older people who are still living in the 50's.

i know my mom had an incident at the barbeque inn a few yrs ago where she could tell they didn't want to serve her and a friend because of their skin color.

  12. very interesting comment. my officemate said that the clear lake golf course is owned by the same company and the company is trying to close the golf course so that they can make condos there which would be a violation of the deed restrictions. i know there is a lawsuit in the clear lake deal.

  13. When I think mid century, I think pink, or teal green...not earthtones. Earthtones are VERY popular right now, and to me at least, really bring the room into the present.

agree. something colorful will really make the room "pop"

sherwin williams has a 50's pallette you might like. suburban modern maybe you can find some pics or items with some of these colors.

I used the burma jade in my bathroom. and am currently researching the stratford blue for my exterior

  14. I don't know if I'd say that side of campus is ugly...just barren. However, I understand that side of campus is vastly improved from the olden days when there was a slaughterhouse by the railroad. Some old-timers have told me that was not a pretty smell. Of course, that's going back to the days when the Y-Building was "state of the art".

i'd have to agree about the barren aspect. I had an office in the y-building in the 80's and it definitely was old then. but I have to say i made some great friends their that i still talk to to this day! i'm glad to see that engineering is getting the money that the other colleges have been getting.

  15. ok..well thats the second problem...I have no imagination at all...I love Shag, but I think its dated just like Patrick Nagel. Where can I get something thats economically priced...please no ikea..and whats wrong with the color? I was thinking more earthtones.

For me the color is ok, but with nothing on the walls there's just so much of it. pics would break up the monotony by giving the eye something to look at above the furniture level. as for rugs, how big are you looking for? There's a place on Fondren called "house of rugs" that has a good selection plus he can order quite a bit more. He usually offers me a good deal with no tax as well. he has shag, jute, etc.

  16. Thanks Again !

For the 1st choice on the curbs and sidewalks . .

Will this work ? If so what are the pros and cons ?

I am assuming very costly ? Do you know how quick the project will be completed with 1st option ?

Does the entire block have to agree ?

yes it will work. it would be best to contact your councilmembers office (adrian garcia i think) who will help you figure out the right way to petition.

pros: it will be the quickest way. but public works will have to do the engineering which will take time so it's not something you can do in a few months.

cons: you will be paying for it. i think they do by linear foot. i know my parents had to pay for their water and streets. i don't know the rate but since they live on a corner they had to pay for front and side streets. their frontage is 250' in front and 160' on the side so it wasn't cheap.

you will have to check on whether everyone has to agree. i believe the answer was yes otherwise you'll have to pay for theirs. i just don't htink you'd want to do that. i'm going to a CIP meeting tomorrow for dist e and i will see if anyone there can tell me. i will ask my parents too because i think my mom was responsible for the petition on our street.

BTW if you don't pay, the city will place a lien on your property. so you WILL pay eventually.

  17. Where exactly is the code enforcement office in Midtown ?

Have any input on how difficult it is about having the city add curbs and sidewalk to our street as opposed to

the ditch that floods when it rains ?

    corner of main and francis

as for curbs and sidewalks..you have two options.

    1) start a petition in the area of interest basically stating that you and your neighbors will be assessed to pay for the improvements. this is the quickest way to get it done.

    2) apply for CIP monies via your councilmember. basically the city will pay for the improvments but it takes a lot longer to get on the list cause you have to brown nose your councilmember. cycles are 7 yrs. i will say that there are a lot of neighborhoods looking for this so it may be very difficult to get it done.
