    Gotcha. My "dang" was more for believing and sharing bad information. Tend to agree that having it in the hands of a known developer is net good. I also had some notion of whatever amalgamation of the Astros, city, county etc that looks out for whatever parking regs/expectations are appropriate would be satiated with the new big lot right next to the stadium and be willing to let this one go, but that's a pretty diffuse motivation.

    Can confirm. They're putting in a few drains and the rebar for curbing is being placed now. Maybe the city can part with the block behind the Marquis after this is up and running.

    Actually no, and it has probably been since March since I had been down that way, so it looked new to me and I didn't click back in the thread until just now. False alarm, I guess. Access to that building is going to be really tough for workers, materials, deliveries, etc. Can they close the sidewalk on Main?

    They have constructed a plywood enclosure around the front doors, looks like work is underway. Narrow bit of sidewalk right there right now, it brings you uncomfortably close to the stoned homeless man trying to wreck the stanchions between the street lane and the light rail track. Seems the dollar store crowd has moved down 3-4 blocks.

    Someone said it was going to be a brewery at one point. Either way, across the street from the "sobering center", I anticipate there will be some social media photo ops with the sign.

    If they could put a skybridge over to the Four Seasons from the Phase II building, that would do it via the Park Shops/Houston Center. If they did that and bridged to the Hilton, you could get from Bayou Place all the way to the GRB without ever stepping outside.

    Very interesting. Can't wait to see it all done. For a redevelopment of a CBD, the area around DG is really amazing.

    A "feature not a bug" if you market it right!. There were a couple of them running the bayou near downtown a while back. Sounded like hell from inside the buildings.

    You're more optimistic than this suburbanite. After seeing all of the designs, I am not convinced that any additional car traffic capacity will be enabled by the whole scheme. It may be needed for whatever reason, but I don't think it's actually going to improve anyone's commute, and if it does, I agree that it won't be better for long and on net, probably won't make up for time lost during construction based on status quo. The construction mess is going to be the worst of it for that neighborhood, I would imagine, apart from the actual buildings that are getting mowed down. At the end of it, you could have something notably better, but this kind of thing is what kills off popular bar districts.

    Tall buildings are vanity projects. Austin has kind of cornered the market on vanity in Texas these days.

    They are actually open now. I stuck my head in and said hi just to look at the lobby. The lady working there said they have a bar and everything, should be a good add once people can go places again.

    I remember that locomotive being in Hermann park back in the day. I want to say that they let kids climb on it.

    Right, not practical, just thinking about the immediate neighborhood. I wasn't meaning to lock them up, just to use a facility that's designed to be difficult to trash as a place out of the weather. No easy answers.

    If we're doing a wish list, The Federal prison on Texas could convert into a hostel, though I'm not sure that would be net better for the neighborhood. Maybe take the doors off the cells and convert it to a homeless shelter to get folks off the street.

    It's going to look good. DG has a really neat "bowl" feel to it. Since Skanska has the lot on the corner shared by this and and OPP (not sure which # that is), perhaps that one would fill in sooner rather than later. and more or less completely encircle the park. Add more development down toward Root square and the new Camden apartment and you've got a heck of a neighborhood.

    That would be prominent, especially from the park. I was thinking of the question about the back side and wondering how much would show from the south. However tall, someone's office is going to hear kids screaming on the ES pool deck all summer. I think the Aloft/811 Main block must have a similar dynamic, but it was more of a weekend party place, or at least that's my impression.

    How much higher will it be than the ES? In any case, seems ideal from a DG perspective, and the foot traffic in the park is still really good. Whatever goes in the lobby here has a very high visibility location, and the garage should do booming after hours business.

    I'm not picky, but driving down the street, the base seems unremarkable either way. Once the construction barriers are removed and the street level is finished out, I think it could be a decent looking place to walk around. The "International Tower" block/garage is now an ugly outlier in the neighborhood. Five years ago it would have been an upgrade.
