  1. Mostly duplicative of hindesky's pics on these two, but might as well post 'em...
  2. Shake Shack did their homework, I'm sure, and they are a very popular brand that seems to be strategically expanding. That they chose DT is a very good sign and hopefully other brands of their caliber will follow suit. The Rice Village type tenants that the other location is around might not be that far off.
  3. Right, it's at least something more than nothing, maybe only ever so slightly more. It's an odd shaped parcel, but in a great spot now.
  4. Any of you folks have the google-fu skills to figure out if something is brewing? I'm not sure what kind of rig this is, but it looks like some kind of drill based on the big motor on the frame behind the tractor, but they weren't drilling when I walked by, rather, they had what looked like a wire going into a small (2" maybe) hole drilled through the pavement. I'd guess some kind of soil testing/sampling, but in any case, maybe there's something planned here...
  5. Does Southwest just outbid the other carriers when the slots come up, or is there some other backroom deal going on?
  6. Surface street traffic inside the loop has increased substantially in the last 15 years and there's more density on the way. I'm wondering if people might start embracing scooters and motorcycles more as an alternative. I just got back from San Francisco and had forgotten how relatively popular bikes are out there.
  7. I'm beginning to believe that density and/or sprawl will replace any commute time advantage fairly quickly. Commuting in a big city is a law of large numbers kind of thing, and there is most definitely a cost component to the time spent, so when a new alternative pops up, things equilibriate around the other alternatives and it takes us all an hour to get home.
  8. I guess I'm with you, but I'm certainly no style critic. It doesn't really strike me as remarkable, good or bad. If they clean it up and have decent business, it will be a big plus for the area. This is another corner that is completely transformed. Prior to the demolition of the abandoned warehouse at 811 Main to now, it has turned from one of the sketchiest blocks in town to the spot where you take the picture for an ideal downtown Houston street scene. I can't help but think the Battelstein building will get fixed up soon.
  9. FWIW, the trim on the outside of the awning is shiny. I am guessing it had a protective film over it for shipping/installation in the pic above. I could not tell you if that makes it any more or less light/airy/modern.
  10. Sorry about that. I first tried to crop it, but that cut out the length of the block being barricaded, then I just blacked out his face, which seemed overly negative, so I added a smiley, which in retrospect is probably more creepy than upbeat. If I were better with the internetting, I'd replace him with Katrina Looter Man or Harambe's ghost or something, but I'm just not.
  11. Part of the "entertainment" is coming along nicely - terror slides! Dude looked straight at me while I was taking this pic. If you recognize yourself and want me to, I can post the original, but you don't look nearly as happy. I couldn't figure out a good way to crop him out, I don't like posting obvious pictures of people on the internet without their consent.
  12. Wow. This is seriously ambitious. Looks like they are planning to take two lanes out of McKinney. If it gets built out as rendered, this will attract the growing crowds around conventions/DG/GRB. I'm sure all of the retail/entertainment/restaurants are just ideas/possibilities at this point, but they do look like they are at least dedicated to framing out the new structure. One nit - we're going to need awnings and fans at Swampy's Neighborhood Kitchen...
  13. Looks like they just started work on the interior for the restaurant. I ate at one of these in downtown LA once, it was pretty good, I think it will do well, though Cafe Express across the street might not like it much.
  14. Is the Kirby location where the high-rise is now, or further south at the bank turned Schlotzky's (or the other way around). EDIT - per the article, it was 2801 Kirby, which is/was a Wells Fargo branch, at least in December of 2016 when the Google car drove by, in between Schlotzky's Bank and the tower.
  15. Definitely an interesting location. I'm guessing this is a resort style place, right? Looks like nearly of their properties are either near/on beaches or casinos, but they do have a New Orleans and NYC location "coming soon". The mega-block just north of the Marriott Marquis downtown would be perfect. It could be the interesting downtown hotel pool scene district.
  16. Interesting article and it gives some of the costs of alternatives. Not surprisingly, the main cost driver is staffing because apparently, unsupervised toilets get trashed and/or people get attacked in them. Seems like the kind of thing that should be prosecuted. The phrasing of LA times pop-up ad at the end of that particular article was unfortunate. Let's see, skyrocketing homelss too violent to manage a public toilet...
  17. Looked like they were prepping the orange panels for repaint.
  18. Shake Shack took down the construction walls that extended out on to the sidewalk. The interior looks close too, looks like they are working on computer systems and whatnot, the screens in the kitchen area were on and there were workers stringing cable when I walked by earlier today. I would guess they will be up and running in a couple of weeks.
