  1. I don't know, but they are working on the new train station by the Rice U/Hermann Park Light Rail station.
  2. If they don't have anything in place by the time Bill White is out of office, I would think it would be a pretty big black mark on his term here.
  3. If I were the owners, I would be thrilled. You're thrown right in the middle of this exciting multi-use development. Unfortunately, they will probably deal with 4-8 years of empty lots and construction.
  4. I drove by this the other day and it looks pretty cool. Big patio, and it looks to be a trendy Midtown bar inside. I know people here hate trendy, but I'm pretty pumped to check it out. I think Houston has a ton of laid back bars, so I welcome these "hard night" bars. Also, what's the name of the new bar right down the street from Maple Leaf where Late Nite Pie used to be? It looks cool, also.
  5. Thanks for the suggestions. I did a little research on my own, and noticed that Maple Leaf has WiFi in Midtown. I like that place, so that seems reasonable. And I also wish the Museum District had a few more cafes or bars. It's all townhomes and museums....although that isn't so bad.
  6. I live in the Museum District and would love to find a place where I could go sip on a beer with my laptop. Does anyboddy know any neighborhood joints nearby? Or is the closest option somewhere in Rice Village?
  7. Does anyone actually think this thing is going to get off the ground in the next 18 months with the economy the way it is?
  8. Is the observation deck still closed? And are they shutting off the water wall at night? I always thought that is when it looked best.
  9. What bothers me is the number of gas stations on prime real estate. Every block it seems like there is a Valero. I also would love to see the 99 cent stores go away. I would love to see some residential proposals right on Almeda with some street level access. It doesn't have to be anything large, just significant enough to fill in some of the empty lots. This strip could turn into a very active corridor very quickly based on the adjoining Museum District neighborhood, the new large apartment complexes, and the high rises close by. There are only a few real estate holes to fill in.
  10. I noticed both of these items as well. This strip of Almeda seems to have a lot of potential based on location, and the fact that there is some great pieces of architecture around here. If I had money, I would invest in land along this strip. It sort of has that Washington Ave feel.
  11. I don't think so, but the slices are around $2. Two slices are probably good enough for lunch.
  12. Just tried Luigi's on Almeda right on the border of the Museum District and Midtown. I thought the pizza was great. They serve it NY style by the slice. Nice little building with a patio. The guy behind the counter was telling me they've been open for 6 weeks and apparently doing well with schools nearby (HCC?). They have a small menu, but it what they have fits my taste for a neighborhood pizza joint. He also said it's BYOB, which is kind of awesome. I'll be going back, especially when the weather gets nice. BYOB on the patio seems like it will be hard to beat.
  13. Last week I saw several tractors on the site moving dirt around. And there was a taco truck there, which means there must be a significant amount of workers there. Hopefully within the next month we will see an actual groundbreaking.
  14. http://swamplot.com/cisterns-and-balcony-b...9-05/#more-3108 Interesting addition to the Montrose neighborhood.
  15. I was kind of getting the feeling that Upper Kirby may be the new club destination in 5 years. That area already has a solid base of bars between the Shepherd/Richmond strip center, Vintage, Kenneally's, and Red Lion. Once West Ave is finished, not only will the bars and nightlife in that development bring more people in, but also probably attract some renovations to some of the older small buildings along Shepherd and Kirby. Of course, the land value will also most likely skyrocket once all of this happens, so who knows.
  16. Yeah I have noticed this also. Not sure what's going on here. It looks like they are actually just moving dirt around the hospital. Maybe a nicer parking lot??
  17. The plays at the Alley are fantastic. The Christmas Carol is always my favorite.
  18. I've thought about this more, and I really don't think the Houston nightlife is dead. It's just too spread out. I think the whole sprawling personality of the city actually applies to the nightlife, too. With bars closing at 2 am, it's impossible to really bar hop in this city. The only places you can do this on foot is in Midtown or Downtown. With Upper Kirby, Rice Village, Washington, etc., the city has little pockets of nightlife. Unless you're going to spend $50+ in cab fare, you most likely will go to 1 or maybe 2 bars a night. Or I guess you could drive drunk everywhere. Either way, this just doesn't equate to healthy business for most bars. Even Dallas has most of their nightlife concentrated along McKinney in Uptown. And of course Austin has 6th.
  19. Get involved, and figure out a way to balance the educational aspect and party aspect of college. Don't make too much fo a sacrafice for either, and you'll end up with a good job and an excellent college experience. Before you know it, it will be over.
