  1. Why do they need staffing and police? Just open it to anyone and don't collect any tolls. Why let it sit there and go to waste?
  2. A monorail is also far less useful and benefits far fewer people than a highway.
  3. Like I said in my post.... we have not always enforced the constitution in this country.
  4. Well, if you ask me the constitution should trump everything. Unfortunately our history shows that it hasn't always been applied and still isn't. If you want to be able to create laws that go against the principles of the constitution there's probably not a lot of people in the U.S. now that will disagree with you. Most of them don't even know what the constitution is. Just don't be surprised when there's someone that takes away some of your rights and doesn't care what the constitution says.
  5. We're supposed to have the judicial branch and the constitution to protect us from people voting in laws that take away rights from the minority. It seems that people always forget about that when there's a law they support though.
  6. From today. You can see 3009 Post Oak in the foreground and 2929 Weslayan in the distance. It was a little hazy when I took this. Sorry about the quality. Maybe I can get a better shot when the sun is a little higher.
  7. If they think it's worth so much they can buy it. That's the only way to prove how much you value something.
  8. I worked downtown for several years. I rode the bus in and had a about a 1/2 mile walk to get to my building. On days when it was pouring down rain the tunnels were a godsend. If the tunnels weren't there I probably would have driven to work. On days when the weather was nice I always walked on the surface because the tunnels are almost always a longer walk.
  9. They are both part of the same conglomerate. This building in Houston is the headquarters of the Samsung company that does engineering for petrochem projects. They compete with Jacobs, Becthel, KBR, etc... nothing to do with cell phones. Samsung is one of the biggest business in the world. If you go to South Korea you'll see Samsung brand apartment buildings, cars, plumbing fixtures, etc... There are a few companies in Korea that make just about everything over there. I once visited SK in Seoul to meet with them about a refinery project in Saudi Arabia. I noticed while I was there that even the toilets in the SK building were made by SK. One of the guys in a meeting I was in drove an SK motorcycle. This building is the headquarters of Samsung Engineering America, not Samsung.

  11. 3040 is on the right, 3000 is in the middle. The new parking garage is behind 3000. They've already demoed half the garage. The new garage will be built there. Rumor has it that the other half will then be torn down and that land will be developed in the future. I used to have an office at the top of 3000 where the floors are only wide enough for one hallway with offices on either side. It was like a treehouse up there. The sunrises over downtown were beautiful.
  12. Correct. You can find a map of it here... http://www.energycorridor.org/about/energy-corridor-district/resource-library
  13. Why does downtown need pedestrian life and retail? I worked downtown for years. I found that the area served its purpose just fine the way it is. People often confuse their wants for what they think are societal needs. That often leads to them finding ways to spend tax money on what the wants that they have confused for needs. They also assume that the things they want are obviously needed and they never even consider the thought that others might see things completely differently. It's just automatically assumed that downtown needs these things.
  14. There's nothing holding downtown down. It's doing just fine.
  15. Roads carry a lot more than just people. Metro rail only carries people. The people that don't ride it or live near it get very little benefit from it. We all benefit from roads, even people who don't own cars.
  16. I don't think their goal is to create an architectural masterpiece or create buzz. Energy companies need less buzz, not more. Chevron's goal is to get oil and LNG projects done and make money for their shareholders. The only argument that could be made for spending big money on an archtiecural landmark would be if they could attract more and better employees with it. Most employees are more worried about their paycheck than working in a landmark though. At least the ones who are grown up and have sense are. Chevron and Exxon are very conservative companies. I've seen them do things like spend 100 hours at $130 an hour to save a couple thousand on a BOM. Every single decision these guys make is about the bottom line sometimes to the point of lunacy.
  17. Compared to the billion+ that Exxon is paying for their campus it's not much. Of course if you invest money in Chevron you only get a 3.25% dividend so they can't just throw money away. They need a lot of profit to pay those millions of stockholders.
  18. Glad you had a positive experience. After driving everywhere for the first 40 years of my life it was very strange being miles from my car the first time I rode a metro bus. I enjoy it now. I think very few people will step outside their comfort zone like you did. I'm about as conservative republican as a person can be except for social issues and I ride local metro buses all the time. Usually it's a couple white collar guys like me, a bunch of maids, and a few blue collar guys. I see no hipsters. I doubt any of the people are liberals that push rail. The people on these buses don't have time to push for rail, we just have to get to work.
  19. It's a classic mid-century design. This style has actually come back into fashion. I used to walk by this building daily. I think it's the best looking building downtown.
  20. I think whatever the owner wants to do with is what's best for it. Of course within certain boundaries... they shouldn't put a toxic waste dump on it. Believe me McDonald's didn't become one of the most successful companies in the world by making bad decisions. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that they probably know better what to so with this land than I do.
  21. I ride metro to work and could live car free if I wanted to. Anyone can live car free in Houston. Unless you're dirt poor why would you do that? I could live beer free too but I'm not doing that. You can get a car for just a few hundred dollars a month. If that's too much then maybe you've got some other problems you need to sort out.
