  1. This was a skit with Michael McDonald as the dad, Mo Collins was the mom and another girl was the teen-aged daughter. They are together at a malt shop having nice conversation and some of the football players walk in. When the mom and dad casually speak to the players, the daughter goes nuts because she's so embarrassed that they are talking to them. This goes on with everything the parents say to the boys. Finally when the boys leave (disgusted with the girl), she goes back to her "normal" sweet self.

I want to show it to my teen aged daughter who nearly crawls out of her skin at the least thing I say to her friends (boys). I hope it's on You Tube.

Most of the early season skits were completely insane! Will Sasso really added to the madness. There are simply too many outrageous ones that come to mind. Perhaps check the website and email them?

I recall there was a time they allowed the public to send in ideas for new skits. I could have thought up hundreds (much inspiration from actual Haif folks) :D

PS, The Vancome Lady is still my all time fav!

  2. So wait, is it gone now? Not even a shell left?

Exactly, about a month or so ago the last pieces went to city landfill. -_-

Correction to my past additonal note: the little homes across the street past the empty fill are more like small Queen Anne homes opposed to Shotgun style. Wish I could lift up and take home before they vanish forever. :(

  3. We have long time friends that live on Santa Rosa and on Forest Hill.

I am surprised that development hasnt started removing those fine homes. :o I bet when they were new (at least the 2 story Homes) they had great views of the small downtown skyline in the distance!

That was one of the only good things Ike did was remove most old over grown old trees and now we have an even better view of downtown at least over off Sunnyland Oaks @ Lawndale! :D The skyline is perfectly framed for us now. In the morning you can se the sun glistening off the skyscrapers and in the evening its another breath taking scene. Too awesome people!

  4. Didn't they put the Sterling Bank building where Canada Dry used to be?

As far as we knew Canada Dry was just a street back there and is still there.

In case anyone forgot the Valero across the frwy was a Sinclair Gas station and across the street (Dumble) was another gas station I think Mobil was removed around 1971 and replaced with a Circle K then removed for the now Eastwood Transit Ctr concrete arch. What a drag, as we used to always to see the local teen crowds hanging out in the parking lot (can still Springsteens, Baby We were Born To Run). The Circle K was so convenient as you could buy brew and slam down on the way to concerts at the then new Summit. All just a pleasant memory now. ^_^

  5. As noted my selections are mostly irritating people that media/paparrazzi has run into the ground. I don't hate any one honest.

    Two more to add:

The woman in the commercial of the 2 angels sitting around up in the clouds. The blue eyed on is very unusual and strange the way she lusts after the somewhat unsuspecting blond angel. Just creepy.

The two goonish guys in the Sonic commercials, they are funny but whats the deal there.

That red hair-dyed woman in The Room Store commercials. Way too perky and annoying. Too much bright color.

  6. Thank you for this, from a Westbury 1978 grad! Man, the rivalry back then between Westbury & Bellaire, legendary!

Quite accurate! We even used to hear about that rivalry all the way to our side (Stephen F Austin)

I also wish I could thank my DECA teacher Ms Blaha for her encouragement and professionalism while a student in DE. She was also quite a knock out, too bad I was just a teen. Rats!

  7. worthy of mention:

    Ashton Crotcher

    OJ (throat slasher) Simpson

    Pink

    Duece Bigelow (actor)

    John Bobbitt

    Scott Peterson

    Joey Buttafuco

That loud jerk from Home Makover

    Simon

    Whoopee Cushion

    Most has-been celebs that do info-mmercials :D

    Thank heaven for remote controls!

  8. We had a cop shooting in the Meridian parking lot in November. http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=...&id=6529138

That area was way worse in mid 80's just like that article stated. There were many new arrivals from cities like LA and overseas where the gangs are way more organized than here. Yes, people Asian gangs exist and HPD quickly stomped out the fire before it grew that was then of course. The only somewhat reminder of Old Chintowns glory days is the still very busy Kim Son anchored there at Pierce Elevated. If you really want to see present Asian gang existance you will have to head to the newer Asian areas of ......all together gang...SW Houston. :o:D

and remember, with 6 you get egg roll.

  9. The old Church of St. Vincent de Paul (Was located at Franklin Ave. and Caroline Street) first mass in 1842. The church purchased a tract of land for burial purposes from the Kennedy estate. Which became St. Vincent Cemetery. John Kennedy was murdered outside of the Kennedy Corner Building in 1878. He is buried in the St. Vincent Cemetery.

Mainly Irish-Catholic, the cemetery was founded in 1853. Early French and Italian settlers, veterans of San Jacinto, Confederate and Union soldiers. (Dick Dowling) hero of Sabine Pass-Civil War, was Irish is buried there. Many were buried here in 1867 during the yellow fever epidemic. The City of Houston condemned the cemetery in 1871. The cemetery was damaged in the 1900 and 1915 hurricanes. Our Lady of Guadalupe Church (1913) Present Church built 1923.

    Cemeteries of Harris Co.,Texas

Wow! A real long time mystery solved!

Now here is another question what came first the Church or the school? Any dates on the adjacent school?

I recall us kids loving to run and play on the swings/slide in the far back corner under the big trees with tons of leaves everywhere. It has since been updated and moved up some if memory serves well. One thing that hasn't changed in ages is that really bland odor that permiates the air from the nearby bayou or factories? Mom said one of our uncles once lived in one of the small homes directly on the side street circa early 1940's. A miracle these houses are still there....for now anyway. -_-

  10. Resurfacing and I am afraid it wont be the last time. :o

This place was on the news about a week ago. There were several church leaders from various denominations in total & serious protest of its location, etc. The story said it will be the largest in the world!? It just sounded outragious. Now Houston will be known as the place to go to get rid of your troubles. Not exactly something to be proud of is it. Whats next souvenirs? You can bet your high dollar that there are more (larger) protest's in the works. Oy vey!

Time to start snapping pics of all the hoopla.

    Ok, here is one article:

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5990832.html

  11. According to this article, there was an effort in the 1960's to clean up the cemetary. "Families of those buried here had an association once but the survivors are so far away they can no longer keep it up."

Perhaps some of those "survivors" could show up & get to work! Or at least knock on the rectory door & see what's needed. When you've set something up, post a request for volunteers. My own folks aren't buried there, but I'd be glad to help.

I always wanted to learn the whole history of the school as well as the church. I had an uncle that attended and graduated from the school back in the late 1940's and my big sis attended as a child in the late 1950's (pic at beginning of this topic). The mass was always in English/Latin and occasionally in Spanish as far as I know then or at least until the late 1960's then we started going to Annunciation down the street on Texas Ave.

It was always believed that the cemetary was strickly for clergy and sisters that devoted their lives to this specific house of worship?

I am almost certain not just anyone can be interred here. Another EE mystery! ^_^

  12. It was a God send when they closed The Silver House & Yit Ing Ho. Will never forget the day around 1981 when we (group) were walking into Yit ing and 2 big rats ran right in front of our feet. This was in the day time, noonish. Kind of made you think you were in for a real treat right. You seldom saw any kitties around this area either. Just wondered.

Yes, Old Chinatown is another Houston memory indeed. There was an older topic of the area and great links to it's humble beginnings early as the 1940's. Developers will soon mow down any remnants like the old pagoda accented brick buildings. I kind of miss the "Modeling Studio" <_< on St Emanuel, kind of gave the place "tone".

  13. I was shocked and think the adults in charge should not let kids run wild there.

Ditto! and sadly some of the parents are just as ignorant. Kids copy what they see at home. I was told by very long time patrons that alcohol was never even allowed in the past during bazaars. I recall the port o cans were even on top of graves. No use in arguing with some of the negative ones on Haif though. That section must be cordoned off somehow. -_-
