  1. Just wonder if anyone remebered a ladies store called Margo's Lamode or something close to that?

I have a friend called Margo and it stirred up the memory.

We may have mentioned that very popular trendy hair style place called Command Performance. As you walked past them in the malls, you would always get that terrible whif of burning colored or newly permed hair and the loudness of Jos

  2. Is there a sticker that says "Honk if you're a HAIFer"?

Now there's an idea! Reminds me of the Buccee's bumper sticker's that reads "I break for Beaver's"

I still say a little Haif gavel is very appropriate because most on here act like they are judges in a courtroom and are always right. A close second would be a bullet proof Haif vest.

  3. Do not underestimate the musical tastes of hispanics. It can be diverse. In Mexico, for example, the 80s music discussed on this thread is popular among the younger generations.

Sames goes for Italy and Spain. The people I speak with are in late 20's to mid 30's and still love The Cure, etc . I assume because they know how their aunts & uncles worshipped the 80's alternative music age so they want to catch up. :P I know when in my early 20's I was buying 95% British music. No regrets whatsoever!

Bottom line is some cultures (or generations of that culture) do not want to open up to new things. So they get left behind with the times.

  4. ... but it makes you wonder how the economy is affecting all aspects of life here in Houston. From the looks of it, they (day workers) are not getting work like they used to.

That's the bad part, no work... so turn to selling dope/prostitution.

Plus... There wb more raids at homes where these people are being held against their will (coyotes) and the crime related to pushing drugs wil increase. Set your watches. -_-

  5. We may have briefly mentioned that When the Prince's Drive in next door was there at Cullen & 45 directly across the frwy on the left of the U of H obelisks entrance once stood a Exxon Gas Station. It was built circa 1981 and was a mere 4-5 yrs old when removed  It was very convenient for those of us living around Eastwood Transit Center (which was not there at the time) just a field of green grass.

Here are more very visible Gulf frwy landmarks that could at least be see n in this immediate area of 45 were the rows of numerous fast food eateries that lined the entrance into U of H main campus ie; Burger King, Wendy's, Pizza Inn (yummmm) we used to invade that one all the time) Those are the main ones that come to mind. There were also many more beautiful homes right across the street from them. Apparently removed to widen the entry way to the campus. -_- Many of these same homes proudly displayed the fraternity banners above door ways or on balconies.

  6. Totally agree with you. Those poor Magnolia trees at the bend on Sylvan have seen more than their fair share of collisions. And the large complex between Idylwood and the freeway are probably *the* source of problems in the area.

Perhaps our prayers are finally being answered. Those blasted apts are being gutted but hard to tell if its going to be demolished (crossing fingers)

That corner convenience store will continue to attract the local vermin & degenerates from those nearby crack motels. Back on the subject from original creater of this topic, Idylwood has always been a beautiful place to live but its that nearby bayou that is a continous threat. See actual pics from Hurricane Ike & its Effects on Near East End topic here. The bayou is one thing to deal with AND the hell trying to get in & out of there ie; Wayside is quite hellish day & night. We have seen numerous tragic wrecks along that stretch over the decades & now its so much more crowded than ever. Oy vey! (throwing hands up in the air) :)

  7. Just a minute ago in the news, they spoke about this briefly and sadly enough showed a young newlywed couple sitting in the courtroom waiting for the judge. Seems they partied a tad too much and got busted on their wedding night.

Depressing way to spend a honeymoon (and with a hangover) Rats.

  8. Now here is some real past former Houston Dance hall trivia:

I was told or it was confirmed that there was once a fun dance hall located right at beginning of Main street. It was called the "108 Club" circa mid to late 1940's.

There was also another very popular on complete opposite called "The End of Main Dance Hall or Club" named because well, it was at where Main st ended perhaps past now Med Center area is.

Please help solve the mystery and even better a photo of one or both of these swinging places! Mom says they used to go to these places but no one had a camera or whatever. :)

  9. Susan...i am new to this site...but I LOVE IT! I am so excited because I must have graduated with you or close to the same year!!! I recognize some of these folks! I graduated in 1975 and grew up in Magnolia Park. I love all your comments because they bring back such fun memories. Austin was way cool and those were some of the best years of my life! I wonder if you are the Susan I remember???

If you click on the Mustang's web above some , you can join and find almost everyone!

I'm still tripping that our 30 yr is coming soon....what! No way!Super Fine in 79 was our theme.:D

  10. If you're interested, and have the courage, take I45 north to Aldine Bender. Man, it is beginning to look like Westpark with all the day laborers set up and camped out in the parking lots.

Sounds like something out of a 1950's B horror flick. Reminds me of the original "Night of the Living Dead" corpses walking across fields, etc.

    Bear traps come to mind.

  11. I do. I want to stay in the East End. My girlfriend thinks I should look elsewhere. I see potential and optimistic about the future of the area. She doesn't (she's stays near Oak Forest, so she thinks this place is the "slums"). I tell her it's improving.

Sorry but I burst out laughing when you said slums, but I'm sure you have a sense of humor!

I have heard all of those kinds of comments from some of the most educated newcomers to this city. They normally go by rumours or media related crapola. Even us local yokels crack jokes about it but its all good.

    still chuckling...

  12. I've been asking myself lately. "To flee or not to flee? That is the question."

I thought you said you lived near Jackson Jr High area? Thats a far cry from Broadmoor.

This area is coming back I would hang in there truthfully. Remember anywhere else that looks attractive may have high taxes to pay and that makes a big difference for many.

See Sunnyland topic, they are still giving these homes away, thats another reason (some smart ones) are tearing down the older tiny homes and building brand spanking new homes throughout. Come drive around and see for yourself. Thats your best advice, see for yourself and ignore the negative jabs from lurkers here. :D

and no I am not a realtor, etc we just want good new neighbors like it used to be.

  13. This is true. I don't bother with home depot anymore. Aside from the worst customer service anywhere, they have those people blatantly loitering around outside. No thanks. Now I just go to Lowes. I've almost always seen a sherrif out in the parking lot. Much safer. Much better.

    Ditto!

Best to head to Lowe's, plenty of parking, quick in and out service, hasstle free and most of the workers are helpfull or at least try to help you. That Specific Home Depot is a horse with a broken leg that won't mend just shoot it and put it out of it's misery. (I hear nearer my God to thee in the distance).

The Whataburger next door has to deal with the lurking 24-7 it seems I feel pity for them especially the employees. They must get some begging for free meals quite often, the teens have told me several times, then get hasstled as they take out the trash or clean parking lot. (yes this does happen) I avoid that burger place due to the dudes hanging around, kids get scared and they stare down the wife evenb if I am present (no respect) it's pathetic. I simply cannot eat peaceably while seeing them just inches from the glasswindows peeking in at you. Quite eerie. <_<

Remember the song "I got the feeling somebodies watching me" well they are!

  14. Looking for any info on the SACRED HEART PARISH, 3617 Main St., Houston,Texas. Have photo dated 1936.

Any history on Church and Church building????? Photos of said church????

    Thanks

I imagine your speaking of the original Sacred Heart right next to Pierce Elevated? You mean there was one further down? News to me. Anyone solve the mystery?

  15. Conducting some research on the East End neighborhood Forest Hill. Can anyone tell me what Forest Hill is experiencing now? (Homeowners vs Renters, crime, flooding, traffic, home values) Is it going through a revitalization? Is it really that bad that it's next to a cemetery? Diversity mix? I appreciate the feedback.

LTAWACS should know, I think that person/s live in that nabe. :)

It is mostly middle class 3rd/4th generation Hispanic some white collar. Most homes are well kept up. Its up there with Idylwood. I have an aunt that owns at least 3 homes there but only rents to professionals. What I don't like is it is just a hop skip from that bridge that connects to Harrisburg and thats not good. I am surprised it wasn't gated off years ago or at least in to the Forest Hill subdivision. For those with children, unfortunately I would not even think of sending my child to these schools the have been so under served by the power that be for ages. The fact that the cemetery is right there is a real positive. The dead wont bother you, it's the "living" that will. The other thing that I would not like if I lived here is having to cross Wayside to access 45 (fastest way to and fro) Wayside becomes gridlock so its best to go over to Sunnyland  or whatever to get around Wayside backup. Just buy a nice little pad in Sunnyland or the hood behind Dinner Bell cafeteria. You 'll be glad you did...minus the guilt.

  16. I never go in this store because it drives me insane. But as I keep seeing this post I just might have to break my rule and stroll through just to enjoy the music.

It will be well worth the experience "will dull the senses" ala Roger Daltrey film "Tommy"

I am convinced this manager must have worked as a DJ at Studio 54, CBGB's, etc. The range of music leaves one Spellbound. If its a lady manager playing this cool stuff she must be a Goth or be a Souxie & The Banshees look-a-like. Too cool.

  17. I was "walking in stereo" about a week ago I think it was a Friday. They played some of the most obscure and not heard for decades cool stuff I swear.

I really wanted to sit on a display and jam or record what was playing. It began with some Bananarama from Less Than Zero soundtrack and kept going into Robert Downey Jr madness.

I need to go shake to managers hand that is daring enough to kick down barriers and remain deliant to ...it's going to get better people! Come back,,,,come back....

  18. And one road around Office City was an original entrance road leading into the subdivision of Idylwood. Saw it on the Sanborn maps a while back. It feeds into Sylvan. Must be the one those old apts. are on.

Wow you are hitting all 6 cylinders! :D

More mind jogging memory for you (actually I should create an East End trivia forum)

That very street you describe that went along Oshman's WHouse & Office City had a 7 Eleven store that became a U-Tote-em store in the 70's. VERY CONVENIENT for the time. Because the neighbors were still civilized then. Those now crappy apts only permitted (Yes people there was a time) single and or couples with 1 child to live there.

As you proceeded into Idylwood it was like Dorothy walking into Technicolor Oz. Stepping into Idlywood was like a Beverly Hills within Houston. Yes people it was very eclectic (pardon the term). Now Idlywoodians continue to battle the elements and everyone applauds them. I truly sympathize.

In mid 80's there was NO CHOICE but to erect a concrete wall mostly in part to the vermin that infiltrated those ratty apts. So, activists  or so called activists said it was inhumane (to dope dealers/prostitutes) so the Idlywood Civic group were "forced" to cave in and remove it. Sound familiar?

Hence the battles or rather war games began in our once lovable East End or at least Near East End. It has been hell ever since. Oops I strayed from topic sorry readers.

Heres a good thing, the row of mailboxes right nest to Office City are still there! Guess that qualifies as a Gulf Frwy Landmark.

  19. Yeah, it is pretty neat to watch it all happen, there is a 2 story on Elliott near Fourcade that is being redone, and on the corner of Elliott and Broadmoor that house is slowly being reworked.

As you say, it will be interesting to see what happens when they are done. Will someone buy it and live in it, or will it rent, and who will it rent to?

It's really touching to see these homes being restored or upgraded especially to those of us that grew up here and remember these homes when they were in their orginal state of beauty.

Here is another tip most newcomers to the city are clueless about this area. Most of these 2 story homes have fantastic views of the downtown skyline. I thank mother nature for helping to knock down these old rotted trees after the recent storm. Not all of it was bad, with these dead trees removed, now these homes have these wonderful views day AND night. I can see DT Continental Airlines tower from my window as I type this note to the world. and we are over near 45 and Wayside!

There are some 2 level homes surrounding Triangle Park and I cannot believe they have not added a 2nd story balconies or a vast upstairs porch to catch the daily sunrise to sunset views. Perhaps its a $ thing?

This is another reason everyone should not have fled for the burbs! Come back...come back! :D

  20. Is that tall yellow oil derick still on the gulf frwy? It was on the inbound side right after Howard Johnsons and before Oshmans Warehouse very close to Wayside. I remember it from back in the sixties. I think it was advertisement for the office complex that was built there. Lots of identical little white office buildings. It had a name but I can't recall. Maybe something like Office City.

Bingo Susan! You win the grand prize! Ding, ding, ding!

Office City was the name of that vast complex and features a most unusual after hours cocktail lounge on the side street facing Oshman's. The club was also called the Office City Club. We used to sneak into the club with an older person/teen & always got away with it. The crowd was that 50's, 60'ish cocktail lounging rat pack sort. You know with the martini in one hand and cig hanging off the lip. Women in beehive doo's. Quite neato but dated for the 70's but still cool. My older bro's best friends mom worked in that complex for ages. As the years progressed & most (if not all) orginal East Enders fled for the burb's the office complex was loosing tenants left & right and eventually "sold out" to cheap renters/leasing tenants and eventually AAMA opened that place next door the apts behind became a haven for dope pushers, etc.

The fact that Howard Johnson's next door "sold out" and the clientele went to pot didn't help matters much. Bottom line best to remember all of this area the way it was. Its all a dive especially the low down lounges/cantinas that lurk ever so near. Is it too early for a drink?

  21. Now I wish I had taken pics of the massive kitchen area too! They had several big coolers. I had to retreive donated champagne bottles out of the coolers at least twice for an Annual fundraiser Gala. Placed on a cart and wheeled out to the thirsty patrons. :D I really wonder if some of the stoves/carts etc could have been used elsewhere. Most of it was still in great shape.

I was going to insert the old website but seems its already been updated (which is good) but the old one had many interior pics of past events. :(

All I have now is a book of all the long time members. Of course they are way older than me! but I used to have to contact them to invite to our events. Here is a snipet from an old listing:
