Somewhere, on one of my many internet searches, I ran across a b/w pic of that Houston Coca-cola sign.

Other old cities seem to keep more of their old relics, even if they are advertising signs. I miss all the nice old neon signs, the most.

I think that Sears store is under Sears South Main topic. I was stunned or intrigued when I stumbled upon it. That one is near or across the street from some famous museum in that Central Historic District of Mx City. I recall it was so crowded it seemed like Holiday season here but even more packed. You reall felt like you were in NYC! I did notice it still had many original art deco chandeliers/sconces/brass rails etc. It was like a Sears museum but everything like the apparel was very modern. Do a Google under Mx City Sears and there it is!

This is a little off subject but I just got word from a person I know that has worked at MD Anderson Med Ctr for eons and she said they are going into another urgent meeting to announce more lay-offs.

and just a word of caution is any time you hear of these BIG career fairs with numerous companies there to take your resume...don't get too excited. Almost every one of the people on the other side of the counter will direct you to their website. You may be wasting time & $ on parking. In most cases the booths are unmanned & just have the logo on the backdrop curtain. Like a bad joke.

The lotto used to be a last resort but even they have dropped in sales. Prozac anyone?

I noticed the other day that the huge Coca-Cola Sign (didn't it have light-bulbs?) that sat at Telephone Rd. & Gulf Freeway still has it's frame standing, something else is advertised on it, now. What a pity.

Here's a funny story, around 1980 I bought my 1st Bell & Howell 88mm from Sears I think then my little sis & me jumped in the car & just drove all over Houston filming anything of interest. We got a good "moving" image of the Coca Cola sign with its bright twinkling display. Check this out, when I was in Mexico City's historic district in 8/2008 from my 16 floor Sheraton Hotel window I thought I saw a ghost from the past. There in the near distance about 1/2 mile was a very similar dazzling CC sign. It was like going back in time! It was on 24/7 and was amazing as dark came.

I was in one of those small rooms for a meeting about a year ago maybe? it faced the bayou but the room was so uncomfortable since the air conditioning was going bad, the antique red carpet had a foul odor and the elevators were very slow. Each room was very dated like being in 1965. Most had small bars for after meeting cocktails.

I have pics from a family wedding and many of a non profit annual gala as recent as 2007. This place was always so alive its just unimaginable to see the outcome. That huge chandelier in the center of the ballroom was killer. Wonder who in the heck got it?

That stage was so grand! It was so neat to stand on it facing the crowds.

Hopefully most of the home still has original tiles, arched entry from living to dining room, mantle and lights fixtures?

We knew or still know many of the long time residents and I always noticed when visiting their homes that almost all the homes in this specific area had very similar motifs, etc. In fact almost each home had a garage apt in back that resembled the house. You may still find the rear of the yard still has those very old wire fences? Those were placed throughout this hood and are quite hellish to remove but it can be done with patience. Notice that most still have the original 2 tire lane drive ways! I thought that was so unusual we 1st moved in eons ago. Imagine how the old (now antique) cars had to maneuver going up and then reverse? Whoa!

Anyway hope your not too close to that pesky train track otherwsie you made a fantastic choice!

This CVS, etc is going up quick! This may sound crazy but that is the best thing that has happened to that specific area in hmmm about 40 plus years. There should be as much fanfare/media glitz when it opens like they do in Las Vegas when they open a new Hotel/Casino!

Now to continue the new growth in all 4 directions. Dreaming I know.

Mom says she heard of The Cotton Club being a very exciting place to.

Keep in mind in these days there was no television and little $ for teens to go have fun. Most of these venues not only brought in classy acts and bands they had great Jiterbug/Swing/Lindy Hop dance contests! So when you were lucky enough to save up $ and get in it was a real big deal. We just take it all for granted now a days.

Don Julio should get get an Oscar for best documentation of this fantastic musical era!I have a feeling he must have been a really well liked & popular person.

Little by little that kind of scuz is being weeded out out of this area. It WAS like a scene from Cops or AMW but certain (wonder who) folks are helping boot em out.All everyone needs to keep doing is dialing HPD & or 911. It works.

The cross street is Lombardy. The reason Broadmoor blvd itself is so vulnerable to riff raff at night anyway, is the dim lighting all along it. Here is the prob:

1. Renters do not care to call 311 to cut down or trim back the OLD rotting trees along this street, hence the darkness/spookiness by night fall.

2. Owners MUST call 311 since these aged trees are on city property. Is it laziness? Great scholars have racked their brains for centuries to no avail. City will cut for free people, what more can you ask for?

3. See Munger/Broadmoor intersection. That old brick house has been rented by more people that P Hilton has got down with! The little old lady passed away by mid 70's & ever since it was a turn stile of degenerates. Look up at the dangerous huge branches ready to crash down....No one calls 311. Ok, I had to make that point. No silk gloves I'm afraid.

I remember that distinctive voice since childhood. I know he was always broadcast here locally from Chicago on KQUE at least until that stations demise if memory serves well. I do recall mom always hearing him even in the mid 60's here in Houston and she said she remembered hearing him since the mid to late 40's? What a career span. I admired his spirit to continue trying to find something fresh to work on even at 90. What a man.

Legendary radio commentator Paul Harvey died today at a hospital in Phoenix. He was 90. Known for his distinct staccato delivery, dramatic pauses, and folksy intonations, Harvey's broadcasts were heard on over 1,200 radio stations and 400 Armed Forces networks and his commentary appeared in 300 newspapers, according to his website. He had been hosting his radio shows on a part-time basis for most of the past year, during which he suffered various illnesses as well as the death of his wife Lynne "Angel" Harvey. Paul Harvey's seven-decade broadcasting career includes more than 50 years working for ABC Radio.

"Even after the passing of his loving wife Angel in May 2008, Paul would not slip quietly into retirement as he continued to take the microphone and reach out to his audience," ABC Radio Networks president Jim Robinson said via a statement. "We will miss our dear friend tremendously and are grateful for the many years we were so fortunate to have known him."

and lest we forget that this "Near East End" area is loaded with numerous split 2 seperate living quarters/duplex's. Or rather if you know how to behave you can live right next door to another single or couple in same home.

Some along Lawndale still cater to 4 seperate living quarters with a nice little old lady as a landlord ala The Roper's in 3's Company.

Again, it depends on where you live. West LA? No problem. Koreatown, where I lived? Not so much.

What irony. I lived in West LA around 1989 and that was a decent area, true. However I 1st lived in Venice and wow did it get funky. Most kids go straight into the gangsta lifestyle ie; V13, Crips, etc. I miss LA but not all that garbage.

I always thought T-Shirt slogans were Ok but were sure to go overboard. I recall seeing a girl with a shirt that read "poon-tang" on the front. Like do you really need to emblazon it?

There was one guy that used to wear a tshirt to school that read "crabs are for everyone" with tiny little insects all over...that really creeped us all out.

I am surprised that LA isn't at the top of the list?

This city is no place for a child. LA is truly geared towards the entertainment industry or rather adults, single or couples but no place for kids. Have personal stories that can attest but trust me on this one.

A dreaded time for many longtime Houston born/raised citizens. All the fake cowboy and gals emerge ie; designer jeans, boots, 10 gallon hats. When it blows over all the garb goes to storage? Donate it people. Yeahahhh!
