  1. Chapstick ?...... In Houston ?..... What are you doing during the day that would require that you keep Chapstick on your person at all times ?

Diabetes, we have no choice. :(:)

  2. The bottom line is to just travel light. I mean how much junk does one really need anyway.

I personally would hate carrying a bunch of gadgets, who has time for all that crap?

    The bare esentials:

    Obviously car/house keys

    wallet

left pant pocket Chapstick (a must)

    the end - fin

  3. When threads dissolve into personal bickering or insults report it! That is what the function is there for.

This does no good. Editor (or whomever owns this forum) lets the same one's continue year after year. Yes, years.

I nearly died laughing when a new Haifer suggested these 2-3 jerks go to argue.com, etc. That was a riot!

Of course it did no good they are STILL HERE. Even more pathetic is how they disquise under assume another name....childish then continue with same bitter traits of .....drum roll.....Trolling!

As another intelligent Haifer noted, its too bad this forum doesnt stick to architecture. The forum has lost so many newcomers/contributors due to the embarassing few on here. Many of these not only had great resources of info but great historical pics and so on but said to hell with this crap and split. See Haif looses.

  4. Anyone else have one?

I went to San Antonio and met my girlfriends brother-in-law who had a man purse. It seemed very useful and didn't look like a purse at all, just a bag with a strap. Didn't look anything like a woman's purse.

    Anyway, what do yall think?

I think if I get one, I'll even call it a purse if someone insinuates so...it'd be funny.

Your not as shy as we thought <_<

    Just don't go overboard!

  5. It is inaccurate to refer to the Hispanic residents of the East End neighborhoods referred to in this thread as "Indigenous". The neighborhoods south of Harrisburg (Eastwood, Lawndale, etc.) were developed for, and mostly inhabited by, middle class Anglo people until the 1960s & 1970s. The traditionally Hispanic neighborhoods of the East End are north of Harrisburg (Magnolia & Central Park).

    Applause!

Dan got it down as perfectly as it can be said. ^_^

In fact on the street where (mom) still lives on in Broadmoor/Dumble area still has many non-Hispanic residents that have been there since the 1940's & 50's. Of course many are senior citizens and they do have children/grandchildren that still live around here. Many of the kids we grew up with our still here and are not Hispanic, Latino whatever. Some are Jewish and or of German or Italian descent. The above is what we witnessed since we have been here since 1968 anyway.

So what if your neices & nephews are of both races? This could drag on people. ^_^

  6. Guess we are in the minority (pardon the pun) that on our side, most of my neighbors are not Hispanic but decided to stay put for the last 40 years or so. Yeah!!!

Here is a real (perhaps unimaginable) image for some. The nearby JP Henderson Elementary was 95% anglo when we 1st enrolled in 1968. See images of the EastEnd Baseball park I posted of back then. Perhaps we are coming full circle? :)

Now, I am speaking of Near East End and it has always been very mixed, as of late anyway. So do not understand the comment of needing more white people? Theyre already here (newcomers to Houston).

Do a test and drive slowly around Idlywood, Country Club Place etc and see what ye shall find. Forget the stereotypes or what media shoves down your nostrils. and no they do not have to hang out at bars to be seen.

  7. In all honesty, make an attempt to become pals with at least 1 or 2 people that you see often that know Spanish or at least know conversational Spanish. This is the best way to hear "live" how to pronounce. Obviously there are CD's you can hear while driving and so on but there is nothing like the real thing.

For basic translations online try : www.Wordreference.com

You can also Google and type in "Common phrases in Spanish" and find a wealth of info.

Cursing someone out in Spanish or other languages can be amazing too...hee hee.

Here are some in another language and you can only guess the rest (dont take this personal of course)

Fileo de putana! Madre fanculo! Bastardo

(this was just a test) :)

  8. There are numerous online (free) forums to start viewing and learning easily. Best part is most are in both English & Spanish. The persons responding are aware that others want to grasp so they do in both languages. Thats is what I do as a courtesy to the viewer.

Notes from Spain.com (caters to all ages/professions)

    Berberber.com (mostly college age group)

    Skyscrapercity.com (all ages)

I buy bullfight DVD's and not only get great entertainment but the media is there constantly interviewing the celebs & crowds. My best advice is try to stay away from learning Texasish slang Spanish. We have butchered it up so bad it sounds "bad form" when conversing with an International group. As I mentioned before, I am involved in several non-profit orgs one of which caters to an International crowd so I am immersed in many from Spain/Argentina/Cuba/Colombia, etc. Our board are all PHD's that have taught language courses. When I am around them it encourages me to learn and I get to hear the proper pronounciations and so on.

Heres the good part, once you start getting somewhat comfortable with Spanish start joining in on the Italian forums, see the similarities.

Museum of Fine Arts always has films, presentations, events for an International crowd. Its all right here at your door step!

    Here you are: www.20minutos.es

Reading or at least seeing images & trying is a start!

Un fuerte abrazo y ciao! ^_^

  9. It's relatively small print :(

    flipper

    Very small, grrrr.

Next time you are on any frwy and see a tow truck passing by take a good look at the car it is towing. I have seen them so jacked up that the car scrapes the concrete, sparks flying all around. You really think the tow trk driver gives a damn? he has a great big grin on his face! and $$$ in his eyes.

  10. I remember the Prince's on Cullen and Main very well. The one on Cullen closed around '90. Like Vertigo58, I still have one of the menus hanging up in my kitchen.

The one on Main held on a little longer but it seems like it was history by '95 or so. Now it's a stopping point for the Rail.

I took a photo of the great sign on the Cullen location (a giant hamburger). I need to dig that out.

and the real irony is the other day me & mom were at a local grocery & ran into the order taker lady from the Cullen location. She went to work at nearby Mandola's sandwiche shop after Prince's closed it down back when. I remember she still had that late 1950's hairdo, makeup, style & speak back then. A rare breed. Miracle she is still kickin around. Too cool. :P

  11. I truly sympathize.

In fact we used to park our cars right near the balllpark al the time before meters were installed. Listen to this one.

I parked my car in the same spot one morning, walked back to car after work and no car to be found. There were (to my amazement) new meters installed while I was at work. They still towed everyone all along that block.

I hate to even hark back to that day. The crap hole tow place could have cared less of "how" my car got there just to pay up or get charged an outrageous amt each day it sat there. You could grind your teeth in anger as much as you want. Best of luck. -_-

  12. Archbishop Daniel N. DiNardo lead the services at last nights huge special Chrism mass. I had not attended a service her in a good while but it never ceases to amaze me of what a grand place this is. Aside all the features and grandness of the building, its the effect the mass has on myself period. Sure wish Haif came with sound effects. The choir must be large and the sound of the Baroque pipe organ is something one must experience 1st hand. If I closed my eyes I would think I were in The Vatican, seriously.

There had to have been over 1,000 in attendance last night and lasted a very long time. There were several processions as mass commenced. There were many uniformed men from Knights of Colombus leading in just before the (hundreds of new priests) entered & were seated. There were rows and rows of Sisters from numerous Convents from around the state in various colored attire. Reminded me of when we saw the Pope in Toronto for World Youth Day (Google) several years ago.

There were several local news cameras on site to capture all of the images and action that night. Surreal. :)
