  1. What would they call it? How about:

    #'s @ HEB

Hilarious! They could even put up several huge silver screens to display the 80's vid's like Strawberry Switchblade's - Jolene, Cabaret Voltaire, Ministry, 9 Inch Nails, etc...... :D

Today I was once in a Haif remind, state of mind. When I went to the RR at an office building in the Galleria area, they were playing some great background music. Yep, even a Rest room can be classy when nice music is added. It wasn't too loud just right and had a tropical St Tropez effect to it. Imagine sipping margaritas/pina colada's while cleaning up? hah! Many upscale restaurants and clubs have RR mood music.

but yes, #'s @ HEB is something we can suggest to corporate HEB headquarters. lol

  2. While I do feel sympathy for any one being out of a job, the fact is Sam Malone had a very dated style or rather his style is passe in todays much more modern hip audience. He was known back in the 70's so thats tells it all. Smell the coffee Sam baby. :)

  3. the rest of the area seems to have been developed in the 20's..is that correct? I lived 2 blocks from the school and my house was built in 39. Was this area considered suburbs when it was built?

No wonder you seemed familiar! Yes, most homes around there were built in the 1930's. Ours over by Dumble was built 1938 and made very well I might add. As mentioned on several ocassions the area always seemed to be like a Small Town USA to us. No need to go anywhere for anything but perhaps downtown and that was a big deal then. :D

The City of Houston's Planning & Development Department can help designate this building as a Protected Landmark of the City of Houston. This designation needs to be initiated by private concerns and takes little effort. As a protected landmark of Houston, the building will receive that much more protection against demolition.

For the long term, the school can be designated as a Registered Texas Historical Landmark (RTHL) with the Texas Historical Commission. This designation gives more recognition and protection to the landmark with an opportunity to apply for state grants to preserve it.

Our neighborhood group is successfully applying for a RTHL for the Magnolia Park City Hall & Central Fire Station addressed at 7301 Avenue F. We also intend to apply as a protected landmark with the City of Houston.

    and great advice Fez!

The library in the school was so tiny you could touch the ceiling with your hand. :D It was rumoured that cattle were once kept in there for a short time, It wouldnt surprise me.

  4. So happy to hear that someone, somewhere is reaching out to assist. Maybe I need to start a petition around the area, we still can find many childhood pals that could lend a hand and provide more historical pics.

I have a good one of an outdoor October Halloween Festival around 1971 with everyone partying, outdoor games and in full costumes. Got to scan of course! :D

The main building had the classic old School glass lamps way over our heads. The ceilings were very high and windows seemed huge. While we sat at our desks you could see the blue sky outside/above, white clouds floating by and feel the nice breezes as we sat in class. Some times they tried to save energy by just lifting a window or two. Maybe we should write a book?

  5. Yes, all of them. Ellington, Goodman, et al. all played in Houston in their heyday. By no means was it considered "too small a market." Documentation is scant, though.

Typically the national bands played at the old City Auditorium.

I asked mom again about where they saw Harry James play and she said the old City Auditorium! :D He was wearing a white dinner type jacket that was then very popular and now again popular. $ was hard to come around in those times so when you saved enough you really appreciated what all the rage was all about!

  6. Ok, here is the response I got a few weeks ago:

After completion of research, editing, proofing and printing of each individual listing, your edition will be shipped and is scheduled to reach you in late December 2008.Thank you for your time and participation in the project.

  7. nmainguy is in a better place,

That one seemed so normal when I 1st joined then as time went on I saw him ripping into many others. It was amazing how far it would go. I assumed he was the owner of this forum so he had "certain priviledges" to insult others on a normal basis.

Just press that button and wham! He isnt the only one of course. Maybe there should be an anger management section on Haif?

    Season Greetings :)

  8. Here we are several months later and there are many visible markers of damage. Over on Telephone Rd near Woodridge there is a building with the second floor walls missing. I was across the street having a snack and wondered why the tarp was all ripped up and flapping around and could see that the walls facing the street were all collapsed. It looks like the buildings after an earthquake.

Even Epworth Methodist Church at Dismuke/Harriet st still has the whole front facade all crumbled. Cant believe the wind got that strong!? Maybe once the wind gets inside the brick walls it loosens them or seperates them from the wood frames. Sounds dangerous, need to have all brick structures checked out like now.

  9. I worked at HL&P off of S. Shaver in 1974 with Dean Coryll's room mate. Dean Coryll had also been an HL&P employee. The room mate said he had never noticed anything strange going on. He soon quit due to harrassment. The boathouse that was in Houston was off Stella Link & Willowbend by the South Main Drive-in. This was blocks from my house. The spot on Bolivar was blocks from my family's beach house.

Houston had been known as the murder capital of the world for years before these monsters but it did help bring awareness that every missing kid was not a runaway and helped start the Runaway Hotline.

Now this may seem like a silly question but by "harrassment" I assume you mean sexual harassment? and not towards females? and you are right that terrible moniker Murder Capitol of the World remained in the media and psyche for years it seemed.

Is it possible that there could have been more remains in Boliver and are now permanently washed away to see by Ike? We may never know.

  10. I drove by Rufus Cage School on Nov. 20,2008. Walked around the fence which was open and took a lot of pictures. It now sits empty and unused. The metal rain cover over the porch has fallen. The wood trim on the top and the wood covering the porch is damaged and has large holes. I went to this school in 1965-1968. I sure would hate to see another Historic Houston Building get torn down because no one cares.

Here is my website on this school. http://cageschool.webs.com/

    Thanks,

    GEW

Really great that someone documented this neat little school as you did.

If you can believe, the school was so tiny that we had to go to JP Henderson because this one was at full capacity in 1968. It wasnt until 69 we were able to then register at Cage. I still remember us kids sitting on those steep stairs at the entrance while mom's chatted below with teachers. :)

The dodge ball used to pound that wall where that water fountain is. Thats where Ms Kriskie (with cat eye glasses) had the ball hit her as she sipped water. It was like the end of the world for the kid that threw it or so it seemed. Directly to the left of that fountain is where several portable class rooms stood.

Sadly enough hurricane Ike wrecked this place even more. Good thing you took pictures. There once were several people on Haif that said they were part of the org that helped stop demolition once or at least have it registered as historical landmark? They seem to have vanished from Haif though?

The cafeteria was where most of the other action occurred especially the plays and celebrations. We all once had to wear costumes of the solar universe. Our outfits were made of crepe paper etc. It was really camp but fun. The cooks made some of the best vegetable soup ever! Imagine it was only 15 cents! :D

  11. I've never done the package deal, but we've done the Kroger cooked turkey (Butterball) for the last several years and it's been really good.

I always had doubts about the package deals. Like Ed said they were the worse.

What is even scarier is when a relative swears up and down that they make the best ever. Once every tries it, its blah!

Last year my brother brought one he swore he knew how to cook. It was so damned salty and DRY you couldnt even chew it. Like chewing on leather. When it was time for everyone to wrap up and take leftovers there it sat alone in the corner.

  12. I am so curious to know who designed that Bus Center? Appears to be one of Nicholas J. Clayton's works of Galveston mansions/cathedrals fame. Appears Romanesque Revival or Gothic Victorian like.

Imagine what it must have been like to walk around inside and what about the interior arts wroks or murals. Wow, wow, wow. :)

  13. This is a good simple plan. I wish you were standing here so I could make a sketch for you. I do this stuff on the side anyway. Of course safety is number 1 priority. The lids can catch tiny fingers and they will be soooo tempted to climb inside. Tiny air vents are a good idea.

  14. Have someone build one. Perhaps do a rough sketch of what you want and present to the craftsman. It should not cost much and you can add any kind of fun motifs all over it. In fact if you have a relative that knows some woodwork its that much more meaningful. When we were kids our dad and uncle built a cool little club house as we called it. We practically lived in that sucker and all the kids on the street loved it. There are many wood work mags with ideas. I made a toy box for my niece and added classic cartoons all over it. :D

This is the creativity that can go into such items.
