  1. Many of these levees were built before the time of new geotextile reinforcement that is commone among new levees. And since we know they weren't maintained, they never got updated. It takes a lot for a levee to hold back rising water. Similar levee breaks occured along the Mississippi river up in the Midwest during the floods of 1993. Remember when St. Louis was flooded like New Orleans? I can see these levees being some of the best in the world when they are rebuilt especially if the Army Corps is in charge.
  2. I've been there once for Last Splash. Luckily me and my friends rented a house boat and anchored off the side. It was a good camping trip. From the sites on Hippie Hollow your rite. There were some good looking people out there, but they didn't get nude.
  3. In Lousiana it's the Mississipi, Atchafalaya, Charles, Sabine, and Pearl Rivers. Around Houston and Galveston is the San Jacinto, Brazos, Trinity Rivers and the many bayous into Galveston Bay that influence the water appearance. There are many others as you further south down the coast. Destin falls in a great spot on Florida's coast where it doesn't get much sediment load from streams.
  4. The contractor was having some disputes with the city on possible additional services and how to get paid. If they are working again as RedScare has mentioned, then they probably resolved it.
  5. I've been here for 3 years. That's why I haven't probably seen a Weiner's here. Many of the ones in Louisiana have closed down too.
  6. Everything I here about UofH shows me it's great institution. I think UofH could become a great urban school. I think the LRT will help the area tremendously. That area of town is in the sites of some developers for gentrification. OTC, you should keep up with the updates as you see them.
  7. yeah, I see your point. I was just being a little optimistic.
  8. I think we had a thread somewhere about the buyer. I think the proposal was for some sort of mixed-used concept. I understand you point about the parking, but I doubt that would happen unless the county pays the developer for it or if the developer builds some parking to charge for events.
  9. Here we go again. Let the pessimism rain. There are no signs that this project is faltering. The final peice the developer needed to move forward went off without a hitch: the city approved the TIRZ changes for the project. Also, Houston has plenty of project starts within the last two years. Why wouldn't this project move forward? Just saying so doesn't really mean anything. Do you have evidence that the project is having problems? (probably should ask houston-development) Everything I've seen so far seems this project is on tract. I guess I should go and puch a hole in one of those parking lots, take a picture, and post it on here as the construction starting. While that make some of the pessimist happy? thefireguy, most large scale projects will pay architects to perform a general design before they have any assurance the project will move forward. What the architects produce is used to help sell the project to investors and financiers. Also, nmainguy: I think you have a good point. I think the Pavilons projects have picked retailers that have staying power. Virgin record stores generally have an appeal to them and having only one in the city will only help them stay open.
  10. You ever wonder why citizens in the city of New Orleans complained the loudest yet the people of Mississippi and recently Florida are just dealing with their problems on there own? FEMA is just getting to parts of Forida after Wilma hit yet no news agencies are reporting their tardiness. The reality is that FEMA is responding as they always do, a few days after the storm.
  11. sevfiv, I've been noticing that for a while. I find that all autosellers in the US are generating pretty much similar designs. I have Volvo S60. I like it not just because it's safe, but it has different styling cues than most cars.
  12. The thing to know about a nude beach: You never see the people you want to see there.
  13. The pollution has nothing to do with the color of the water in galveston. It has more to do with the sediment load in the streams going in to the gulf at that point. For example, in Gulf Shores Alabama, the water is a light brown. On beaches not to far away by Pensacola, the water is crystal clear. Mobile bay and the nearby rivers send lots of sediment by Gulfshores that Pensacola doesn't see. Pretty much all of the Texas, Louisiana, Mississipi, and Alabama Coast are like this. Florida has a mix between high sediment water and low sediment water depending on where your are.
  14. To have kid in your name and want D&G clothing. I wish I had your budget for clothes.
  15. My experience with Virgin (in New Orleans) was three large floors of a large selection of music. I found artists i could only read about on the internet and hope to download a song from them. There are a lot of music choices in Europe and the rest of the world that you typically don't have access too that I was able to get too. In todays world with Amazon and other internet retailers, you can get almost everything. This is why I think the music store concept in general is not too strong unless it can offer more than just CD's.
  16. It looks a little weir that the windshield doesn't come down to the hips of the car. Either way, I'm always up for different designs than the same ones we are seeing from autosellers here in the US.
  17. What is to preserve? So someone infused a little polynesia with some palm trees. Hardly an architectural accomplishment. Some things aren't worth saving. A small historical cottage in the Heights or a Mod house in Westbury i can see being saved; but in a fast paced commercial area like Uptown, I can't see saving these apartments.
  18. Yeah, the logo is kind of neat. Maybe I should make one with a K
  19. Ok, I know where you stand now. How does that Kool Aid taste?
  20. Are they putting in a bid or are the closing a deal? I doubt they would be sold. Don't you remember the recent Unocal fiasco?
  21. One way streets are always effective at reducing traffic congestion, but businesses are usually against it like they are with medians unless they is enough pedestrian traffic. Westheimer would need a parallel street though.
  22. Tower was pretty good too. I've been to the new orelaans one several times. The Virgin Store just had a better location in the Jax Building. Put it this way, people who buy CD's at BestBuy and Wherehouse have been missing out. Soundwaves is even a little pricier and so it FYE.
  23. Within a year for some posters on this board is eternity. They'll start posting that it's never going to happen unless something happens the day after the developer acquires the land. The pieces I'm talking about: demolition, site cleanup, and getting all permits. I'm wondering if the city will require detention since the site is fairly large, maybe they'll claim the are not putting any increased imperviouse cover and not need it. I'm all happy for this project. It will make the Greenway Plaza area like it's own mini-uptown.
  24. At one time, Men were pressured to be married. You couldn't be gay or at least appear to be single. The movie brokeback mountain is coming out soon and deals with that issue. The two leads are gay but are married and with children.
