  1. http://www.houstonarchitecture.com/haif/topic/23402-historic-districts-in-houston/page-27#entry381088
  2. I have no problems with camelbacks from a neighborhood perspective. Wouldn't want to live in one of the things, but whatever. They will get integrated into the neighborhood with the hundreds and hundreds of other architectural oddities that exist EVERYWHERE in this neighborhood, its just unfortunate for property owners that are going to get ramrodded while this current preservation fad lasts. 50 years from now, people are going to discuss how these certain houses ended up as crazy looking as they do, and maybe someone will even idiotically try to "preserve the camelbacks!" I doubt they'll blame the "realtors and builders" for their existence, though. Everybody knows why these are being built.
  3. Seems like there is a Heights restaurant thread with pages and pages and pages of posts that it seems that those posts could have been moved to without banishing it to a section of the site that I didnt even know existed until just now.
  4. Perhaps the owner supported Wal*Mart, or was against the historic districts and is just getting their deserved retribution.
  5. At least they didnt tell them what color to paint it.
  6. What things were paid for that should have been paid for by the private entity? My understanding of 380's is that they involve the private entity paying for things that the PUBLIC should pay for and then getting paid back by the public later. No doubt I am just confuzzled.
  7. At some point you get back to threatening people with a machete and then taking over their bar with legal shenanigans though.
  8. The decline in 77007 is even more extreme as it dropped from 55% hispanic in 2000 (as opposed to 1990 in 008) to 30% in 2010, declining roughly the same percentage in only 10 years.
  9. Even assuming you are correct and Fiesta is having problems in the Heights then its is most likely down to the fact that Fiesta's approach and marketing is hispanic oriented and since 1990 the Hispanic population of 77008 (and probably even more extreme within the actual Heights) has dropped by 46% (17920 persons/55% of total as of 1990 census AND 9672 persons/32% of total as of 2010 census) rather than competition. The fact that more mainstream/majority grocers are having more success than the minority catering grocer is that the area has become less of a minority center than it was 20 years ago.
  10. Traffic isnt even bad over on Sawyer except that the layout is and directions are a bit stressful over there. Yale is just a breeze by comparison.
  11. Maybe I'm just easy going, but the only time there is any real frustrating traffic in the Heights area south of I-10 its almost always related to rail traffic, not what retail stores are in the area. The only other times that cause frustration are within parking lots if I happen to end up at the store at a busy time.
  12. The only jam up Ive been caught up in lately is the afternoon rush hour jam thats always been there on Heights at Washington and at I-10. The most annoying new problem that I seem to get caught in lately is at Waugh and Dallas, but I dont really know if thats always been bad or not.
  13. I'm glad to not have to venture over to Sawyer to go to Target anymore as well, although my preferred office supply place is Staples so I havent been able to eliminate it completely. The feeder roads have shaved a lot of time off my morning commute, since its been much easier to get on Yale to go West on I-10 even though its a slight backtrack East for me (Nicholson) than Durham was in the morning. It's also a much easier merge than the blind run of doom the entrance ramp from Durham can be.
  14. As someone who lives north of 11th, I find it a sign of incredible progress (which is obvious when I go jogging) that someone south of 11th could actually make atheclaim that they live on the "good side" without being laughed off the board.
  15. Well, I know that if they didn't say it, it must mean it won't be safe in 5 years.
  16. Thats a relief. We wouldn't want any aztecs or scientists in India getting convicted of manslaughter because they didnt provide definite and adequate disaster warning.
  17. Sounds like the trees might have a deficiency in caliper inches if branches arent holding their weight.
