Today we're celebrating @theshawngawle as he steps down from his role as executive pastry chef at Goodnight Hospitality to open up his own restaurant! Shawn has been with us since day one and his talent and unique perspective has raised the bar for pastry programs in Houston and beyond. He was an integral part in building up our pastry program, and he's leaving us in great hands with @samm_2424 (stay tuned for a dedicated introduction to Sam soon!) It's always a rare treat to witness such a collaborative transition between two creative and talented pastry chefs! Wishing Shawn all the best on in his new adventure. We can't wait to see what he builds!

This is huge news, right? That probably means they're about to start developing that next area of MKT?
They added portapotties and dumpster onsite and they’ve been cleaning out the inside over the last few days

Someone at the Planning Commission meeting mentioned about a parking garage possibly being built. The old Fitzgerald was once rumored to be a parking garage since the owners who bought are a parking company, not sure that is still going to happen though.
The Fitzgerald's lot as well as the little covered parking lot between Pho Binh and Christian's Tailgate is owned by a company called EZ Park - there were rumors of them wanting to build a 32 story tower at the White Oak Dr / Studewood intersection. not sure where they are with any of this process. but they also own Railway Heights Market and if how that is going is any indication of their future direction, I wouldnt hold my breath.

We could also use some Latin American (Colombian, Peruvian, Salvadorian), Middle Eastern (Israel, Greek, Persian, etc)

What’s everyone’s thoughts on the Allen’s new light scheme? Definitely a showpiece at night

Railway could be such a nexus. 1 mile from Heights Hike and Bike Trail, 1 mile from Memorial Park. They ought to be lobbying hardcore for the trails to be extended

Did they need a variance for this?

Can’t see any of your shots @cityliving

The only active project there is a connection between San Felipe and Memorial Drive. It’s taking forever to coordinate with centerpoint and Union Pacific and thus the cost has ballooned but the city is still going at it https://www.h-gac.com/uploads/transportation-improvement-program-call-for-projects/30043512262014100539AM.pdf

Man imagine that restaurant depot became a giant mixed-used development...
IIRC that giant parking lot by the depot will be turning into detention and potentially parkland

Let’s just put it this way, whatever METRO recommends ultimately is what the city will implement. If the board of directors at METRO is convinced of keeping three general purpose lanes in this section of the project, it will happen this way.
Sure the city could technically pump the breaks because it’s their right of way and have authority over METRO but this road redesign is so minuscule that the city in full force is *unlikely* to interject.

Here's a Chronicle article that gives an idea of the competing interests Metro has to consider. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-texas/transportation/article/gulfton-brt-metro-houston-lanes-transit-18175799.php
And, again, it's ultimately the city that decides how many lanes there will be for cars.
We were given a quick presentation on this by a planner at the city and she was telling us this is very much up to METRO

Still, residence inn is part of the Marriott brand and no matter what the hotel looks like, nowadays they add some lobby activity and all those guests are real cash spending guests that are looking for things to do in the area

🙌 I love all the hotel development happening around the central neighborhoods. When I had moved away for work and I visited Houston, I never understood why there were such few options outside of CBD

They aren't adding a lane for cars; they are adding a lane for BRT buses. And from Gulfton to Bellaire they are removing a car lane (and adding very wide shared use sidewalk/bike lanes, as proposed for the rest of the Hillcroft BRT route).
And the sidewalk/path with which they propose to replace the existing sidewalk and bike track is VERY wide and will easily accommodate bicycles and pedestrians. PLUS Hillcroft currently has bike track only from Westward/Highstar to Bellaire Blvd? 4/10 of one mile. Metro is proposing the very wide sidewalk/bake track from Gulfton to Bissonet 1 1/2 miles. Looks like greatly improved conditions for all involved. Bicylists give up 4/10 of a mile of exclusive bike track in exchange for 1 1/2 miles of nice wide shared path.
The section in question is currently three lanes and a bike lane in each direction
they are proposing maintaining the three lanes and adding an exclusive bus only lane in the middle while removing the bikeway. They are removing buses from the current three vehicular lanes so effectively they are widening the road for vehicular traffic
Three lanes of traffic now un-impeded by bus traffic would be hard and unpleasant to cross as a pedestrian and we would lose safety improvements that accompany road diets (less speeding)
for me this is not about losing the bike lane. I would be most in favor of making an extra wide path similar to what they did on Bagby in downtown on both sides where there is a designated bikeway and plus a pedestrian exclusive path.

Not sure if we have a topic already for Spring Creek. Wanted to get a sense of how much of Spring Creek currently has trails. Google Maps is not updated and the Houston Bike Plan Map does not include it because most of it is outside of CoH limits.
I know the longest completed section is from I45 to US-59 (~16.5 miles)
there are approximately 5 miles of trails west of 45 but I’m not sure how far they go.
what about Tomball?

Yes, I don't see them moving their fence till after the project is close to being finished. Most every single large project like this does the same thing.
Do you know if Modera Waugh did the same thing with the sidewalk and part of the driving lanes?

I just wish we could have both. Like maybe more down-to-earth lunch specials for lunch and high-end at night?
