Olshan Lumber Company At 2600 Commerce St.
Andrew Ewert replied to JBTX's topic in EaDo, the East End, and East Houston
My memory may be wrong, but both of those are just single-story for the actual retail portion, right? I was thinking more like multiple floors for retail, multiple floors for parking. Keep the footprint as small as possible. But I was mostly reacting to the person saying that the Olshan site was not large enough for even a small HEB, but maybe that's not true if you're not doing surface parking. -

Is it not possible to build a multi-story HEB... I mean, seriously, I've never seen one but there's no reason why they couldn't stack multiple floors of parking and retail. Is there a *truly* walkable HEB anywhere in the city? -
This would be really stupid, but if Texas Central loses the suit, what would keep them from building a two-stop service on a portion of the line they already own, selling one ticket, and officially becoming an "operating railroad"?

I cannot overstate how much I hate this idea. Yes, build high-rises all over downtown. I love them. But this is a once-in-a-century chance to reclaim a huge swath of green space walkable from downtown. Think Millennium Park in Chicago.

Discovery West: Mixed-Use Development Downtown By Skanska
Andrew Ewert replied to Moore713's topic in Going Up!
There really aren't more than 3 or 4 other lots that would have anything like this, and the ones that do just have square buildings on them. I think the only other semi-contender would be The Hamilton.- 1,094 replies

This project is so funny to me. I'm glad the Embassy Suites is getting covered up, but damn that pool is going to be useless lol. "Visitors to the Embassy Suites can enjoy sunning themselves daily from 12:33 to 12:37pm"- 1,094 replies

My understanding (as a tenant of Common Desk on the second floor) is that the 4th and 5th floors are intended to be majority, though not entirely, leased to Microsoft and a Chevron green energy accelerator. And it's more about those companies not being in any hurry to get back to in-person office work yet. Hopefully that delay isn't an indefinite one, but my understanding was that it's just the expected slowness that comes with getting anything moving during Covid. I could be misinformed, but I feel like that's what I've heard.

I guess I've never seen it like this... to each their own. For me, 609 Main has always been a good building, but certainly nothing iconic or noteworthy. The closest this city gets to something iconic for me is 700 Louisiana.- 2,216 replies

Dang, that sucks :/ I've always liked this building and the mural on its side. -
Then that's even dumber if it's going to take until 2028 to even complete one segment, even if that means that it will all be done by then.
-
The article doesn't specifically mention this isn't the case, but why would you not open the line after a few stops are done and expand service incrementally? If they're really waiting for the whole thing to be done in 2028, that's stupid.

What does Houston mean to you?

Maybe this isn't quite the right forum for this, but does anyone have any recommendations for flight schools in the Houston area? I've gotten interested in pursuing a PPL and would love to hear if any others have first-hand experience.

What does Houston mean to you?
Andrew Ewert replied to Andrew Ewert's topic in General Houston Discussions
Wow, that's a better answer than I could have expected! Someone needs to put that in a tourism commercial. Out of curiosity, what was the other city you've held onto friendships from? -
As part of a project I've had banging around in my mind recently, I'm interested in others' thoughts about what Houston means to them. Specifically, when you think of Houston what are some of the first things that come to mind? What makes Houston different from any other major city? What, if anything, really symbolizes Houston for you? More than anything, you think of Houston as the ______ city? Really interested to hear everyone's perspectives!

J-Bar-M Barbecue At 2201 Leeland St.
Andrew Ewert replied to Urbannizer's topic in EaDo, the East End, and East Houston
Got around to trying this place for lunch today. I'd mostly echo what @wilcal said - perfectly happy with the food, but also not blown away. The space is BEAUTIFUL (especially outside) and I think there's a ton of potential here. The brisket and sausage were both solid; I thought the pork ribs were a lot less tender than they could have been, but the flavor was there. Overall I'd say a good 7/10, and I'm excited to see where they take this place. What it lacks in not being Pinkerton's, it makes up in being way closer than Pinkerton's, lol. -
They know that, they're just taking the opportunity to take a dig at trans people regardless of how off-topic it is.

Townhomes - 2616 Polk St.
Andrew Ewert replied to Eastdwntwn's topic in EaDo, the East End, and East Houston
Certainly my situation is not everyone's situation, but this townhome layout works perfectly for me. I'm able to rent out the first-floor bedroom, my roommate and I have privacy being separated by a floor, but can congregate in the middle when we're feeling social. -
