Yep same train of thought. I responded to a lot of his nonsense on Twitter and made it a point to let him know that voters approved the bond. We can't let the Culberson mindset ruin this again, which means anyone and everyone in this forum needs to be as vocal as possible, whether by social media, in person, or however you wanna do it.

The best opportunity will likely be during confirmation of Whitmire's nominees by the Houston City Council. Hopefully there's enough transit advocates on city council to derail (pun intended) King's appointment. Otherwise hope he doesn't have enough influence to create more transit dissidents on Metro's board. (Now back to UNITi, we can discuss this in another thread)

if as Big E says, the land is already in use as parking, that means someone already owns the land, convincing all of them to sell to make a park is going to be tricky.

maybe TXDoT leases the land to someone so they can use it for parking?

So TxDoT can eminent domain like ten blocks of EaDo to build a highway, but not ten blocks of highway underway to build a park. Love that.

The schematics published by TxDOT have always referred to the land the Pierce sits on as "Surplus ROW" (right of way). In addition, HCAD shows there to be no parcel on those locations. It's safe to assume the someone that owns the land is the State of Texas. TxDOT could always sell the land without consulting the city and county to developers (or the types of people who own parking lots and never do anything more useful with them) but I doubt (maybe hopefully) that would occur.

^^^ well, why can't aTm just construct this tower as initially expected?  they are ALWAYS bragging/claiming to the masses that care to listen, that "they are LOADED with MONEY/CAPITAL".  what on earth, is really going on here?

Texas A&M doesn’t need the space yet (they’ve still got plenty of shell space to build out in Discovery Tower) and can’t just build a vanity project with no purpose. They certainly cannot build an office building with university resources that would then be leased to the private sector. It would be very bad for them to try, from an ethical governance perspective, and would rightly invite the scrutiny of the Legislature as this would be an arm of the state government competing with the private sector. There is a fine line where a private developer can do it on university land by leasing the land which is (or was) the arrangement with Medistar here.

Is there really that much excess ROW to being with?

The Pierce Elevated isn't all that wide. Comparatively.

Imagining the area without Pierce, what is left is just regular city blocks, and it looks like the majority of these blocks have structures on them.

Which leads to the better questionz who owns the rest of the blocks that are occupied by these buildings?

I don't see the linear park. I agree with the poster who said parking. My money is these lots will quickly be repaved for parking and the lots will slowly be redeveloped.

If we are getting more park, I would bet on them going over the highway caps before I would bet on the Pierce ROW. Without Pierce it just multiple half blocks spliced with very busy streets.

Half a city block x11 (plus some more oddly shaped portions of blocks) is quite a sizable amount of land. Especially for walking/running trails. As long as the city has any say, I don’t see parking as a serious suggestion.

  5. Engineering Classroom and Research Building (ECRB). This will frame a nice new quad for campus. The site where it's going is a bit oversized for campus. It will be 51,000 sf and will break ground in the Spring. The terrace will be a fantastic touch and is reminiscent of the Zachry Engineering Education Complex in College Station. Makes sense as both buildings serve a similar purpose, but on two different campuses.

Upper Texas Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital and Educational Outreach Center. This is in the fundraising process and has no formal start date yet. It will be located on the west side of Seawolf Parkway.

  6. The variance request for the single family development, dubbed "Casaritaville" was denied by the city but construction equipment has begun arriving at the site for the Margaritaville resort. Pile-driving cranes have arrived so construction is likely imminent if it hasn't already begun.

  7. Dickinson City Council approved the tax incentives for the Water Street development on Wednesday. Below is the latest site plan. It's disappointing that the apartments were removed from the project but hopefully the large surface lot could be used for future expansions of the project. While the multifamily was removed, the hotel was upgraded from a standard suburban Marriott brand to a boutique hotel. Construction is expected to begin in the spring.

Does the article specify if any of the buildings are actually mixed use or is this just multiple uses on the same property?

Nothing bad is happening.  Phase I has delivered, MDA and UTH are now under construction on their buildings.  We shall see when the remaining institutions start building, and the other "industry" buildings by Beacon Capital will obviously be driven by demand which there's barely any new Office buildings getting capitalized around the country right now.  I expect the hotel mixed-use will get legs when rates and prices come down.

Dallas has nothing that comes close to the scale and magnitude of a project like this from a life science front.

I suspect the Parcel B building (Texas A&M's site that was announced last year to be a joint project with UH) will get moving now that UH has a source of funding for it (the new Texas University Fund), although it is not yet on UH's capital plan (it is on Texas A&M's).

  10. Some additional info found from a NAL-JSC presentation by the director of center operations at NASA JSC:

Artemis Rock Yard. 4 phases, will allow for suit, vehicle, and equipment testing. The TAMU Proving Ground referred to is the Innovation Proving Grounds at the Texas A&M RELLIS Campus in Bryan. The Innovation Proving Grounds were built for the Army Futures Command with an appropriation from the Texas Legislature.

The water tower, Astromaterials Research & Exploration Science Annex, and Building 37 demolition were previously mentioned. The Operations and Maintenance Facility is Project N1 from the short term plan in my last post. Building 49 (Vibration and Acoustics Test Facility) is being put out to bid for industry to lease. Also of note was that a new engineering facility would be built across the street from Building 13 and Building 15, beginning next fiscal year. JSC will be creating a new master plan beginning next year as well. The last major point of discussion was Texas A&M's facility at Exploration Park. This is moving through the planning phases. An interesting outcome of that project is that Space Center Houston's lunar/martian surface simulation facility will no longer be moving forward as currently planned. Texas A&M will build those two facilities and duplication doesn't make sense. If Space Center Houston includes Texas A&M's facility as part of their tours, the university will have scored a major recruiting coup. JSC expects to have private commercial space companies take up space in Exploration Park as well.

  11. The Emergency Operations Center is now complete and an addition to Building 31 (Lunar Sample Laboratory Facility) is either underway or now complete to create the "Advanced Sample and Asteroid Curation Facility). Building 37 (Lunar Receiving Laboratory) is slated for demolition. Additionally, a water tower is now under construction.
