  1. Can anyone recommend an architect with experience designing recording studios? I know, it's an odd request.
  2. Still not open, but their menu is posted: http://www.beavershouston.com/centeredmenu.html
  3. I would assume (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that many, if not most, residential home builders don't have an architectural background and would have little appreciation for something like this. How many times have you seen on this forum or others a comment like "who cares -- it's just another old building"? Most people in general don't appreciate modern architecture. A co-worker of mine was talking about the home after she read the article and said "Who would want a home with Formica?" I mean, to reduce the significance of this house to "yucky Formica" is ridiculous, but prevalent. (Next time I'll tell her that I just installed new Formica in my kitchen!) I do! Think of the swank parties you could throw!
  4. ditto. Culturally, I don't know how else to respond. But it makes Houston look pretty good. It's got Esperson, the water wall, Tranquility Park, and other shots of downtown. Don't know if the pool scene or the other water scene are in Houston, but they probably are.
  5. From my son, Yes, the zune software will automatically convert the songs you have in itunes or windows media player, along with any other mp3 or WMAs you have. To set up the zune software you need to download it from zune.net. Once you've done that you can name your zune, but the whole process is pretty straight forward. As far as i know, the zune marketplace has anything itunes or napster would have, but if you can't find a song on zune marketplace, you can still buy the song on itunes and put it on your zune. Zune marketplace just added music videos, but i'm pretty sure (but not positive) that any movie you buy on itunes can go on your zune. In addition, you can download videos from Google Video onto your zune or ipod. Hope I helped you understand more about your questions
  6. Lisa Gray has a very nice article on this subject is today's Chron: "Abandoned house, abandoned hope in Meyerland" It mentions the forum. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headli...es/5298831.html
  7. You don't have to buy uncomfortable furniture. I bought mod-type sofas and chairs from Crate and Barrel and other places that are very comfortable. If you have mod accessories to go with them, it can work nicely. Go to resale shops and estate sales on a regular basis. When we moved into our mod house in the summer of 2006 I basically had to get all new living room and family room furniture because what we had was not mod at all. Over these 17 months I've found great stuff cheap at the resale stores and slowly my house is coming together. It's not a purist's heaven, but it is MY heaven. It's got my personality within the mod look. I also hired an interior decorator for one hour of time to help me make a few decisions before I redid my kitchen. That helped a lot. The previous owner redid the flat roof, so hopefully we won't have to do any repairs soon (knock on wood). Do you know what the original flooring was in your home? Do you have any terrazzo underneath what's there? It might be cheaper to restore that than get new wood floors.
  8. What about University Drive in College Station, east of Texas Ave? There are many new restaurants there, all of which seem to be doing really well. When we're there we'd like to try some of the new places, but there are lines everywhere.
  9. On the before photos there was a cool louvered (for lack of a better term) fence in the back patio area, atop of some layers of brick. Is that still there? I really like the way that looks.
  10. I've seen it in person, although only the exterior. It's great for what it is -- a home for a school that encourages new ways of thinking. Just walking into it would put you in that frame of mind, I'm sure. But if it's leaking on you, that's another issue.
  11. Ha! These are great, editor. Very clever.
  12. Very true. It was frustrating as a listener. He rarely discussed anything in depth. It was all surface-level. I doubt he'll be replaced by anyone better, though, given the path of talk radio of late.
  13. Try Pasha on University near Greenbriar. It's Turkish. They have a private room upstairs. http://www.epasha.com/
  14. There was no indication that they will have video rentals. I grew up buying records at what I think was the original Soundwaves on Broadway at Belfort. I do like Soundwaves, but Cactus had a better selection of Texas artists, and they had the in-store concerts, which were awesome. Looking forward to more.
  15. We went to the event there last night. Good to see they've built a stage so they can have concerts again. This one's bigger, too. They also have a vinyl room called the Record Ranch with a decent selection of rock, country and r&b LPs, plus 45s. They didn't have all their inventory out yet, but we were able to buy some CDs. I'm psyched it's coming back. I prefer to give my money to a locally owned store instead of Borders and the like. It should open sometime this next week.
  16. I was there this past February for work also. My coworker and I were walking down a side street and passed a homeless person who asked us for money. When I said I couldn't help him, he yelled loudly "Go back to Minnesota and shovel some snow!" We were kinda shocked so we laughed a little bit, which pissed him off even more and he yelled something we couldn't understand. Never had that happen to me in Houston. You should definitely go to Golden Gate Park -- there are many, many great things there for you to photograph. Then you can walk down Haight Street and look at all the cool shops near Haight/Ashbury.
  17. Thanks for sharing, Boris/Issa. You're groupings are always interesting.
  18. What about building a fence? or a brick wall. Grafitti would be preferable to feces.
  19. I found this: http://blog.cleverley.com/ And their website is www.beavershouston.com but there's nothing on there but an address and place to add your name to the mailing list.
  20. True, but if we could just change one person's mind about bad home design, it's worth it.
  21. I drove past the GRB yesterday, saw the crowds from the convention and was thinking how incredible that area's going to be in just a year or two. If we can successfully pull off a convention with 17,000 attendees now, just wait until the park, the Pavillion, and all the other buildings in the area are done. I know it's been said repeatedly on the forum, but geez it's exciting for the city.
  22. Go to the Options button near the top right of the topics page and under Display Modes choose Standard.
  23. Four more days to vote, people. Let's hear from more of you!
  24. I worked there for 10 years. It's a great building in an easily accessible location. That green space atop the garage was underused -- but it was very pretty. Glad to hear they're doing something with it.
