  1. That's a shame.. I wasn't really sure what market they were going for however.. Sandwiches, coffee, nick nacks, and meats and fish.. hmm..

Went there once for coffee.. was decent enough.. Went back another time to check out the meats.. WOW that was expensive.. we were entertaining for 6, and it would have been cheaper to head to Taste of Texas than buying and cooking at home..

  2. This thread is cracking me up.. All about grocery stores.. heh

The gas guy needs a new schtick..

The W. Gray Kroger topic on the attractiveness of patrons I believe was discussed somewhere else here. Definitely more attractive there. ;)

I enjoy the Studewood Fiesta on occasion, for a case of beer or wine.. Their fish and meat selection is abysmal..

I'll have to check out HEB.. but anything "outside the loop" is far for me. :P

  3. On the exterior you can see that they've also made some key changes by bringing in brand new homeless guys to sit on the benches at the side of the store and look creepy as you walk back to the car at night.

You can also see that they're saving up for the big expansion by cutting out all training for the baggers and adopting the tried and true "cram it into a paper bag just like you do plastic bags" method. Eventually they'll save money on buying paper bags because customers won't ask for them anymore. BRILLIANT!

If Kroger invests in that store anymore I might start going to the new HEB on I-10 now for EVERYTHING and not just for big weekly trips.

I really only go to this Kroger now if I need something after the kids go to bed.. And then there's always someone in the parking lot asking for money because his car ran out of gas and he's trying to get back to San Antonio.. or wherever.. or else the typical vagrant who wants to tell me a long story that I don't give a sheet about..

If I need to pack my car longer than 2 minutes, I head to the Kroger on W. Grey.. The 11th st. Kroger hasn't cleaned up enough for me to go there often enough..

  4. Built with public and private funds, the "Tolerance Bridge" will connect trails around Allen Parkway with those on the other side of the bayou on Memorial Drive near Montrose Boulevard.

The "Tolerance Bridge" ?! WTF is that?!

    And where are the pics?

  5. This is why we stopped going to Berryhill. If you want your kids to "go nuts" I suggest you take them to McDonalds or Chik-fil-A. The patio at Berryhill is for people to enjoy their meal and drinks without kids crawling around. Last time we went there, we were joking that they should just put in one of those cages with the colorful balls. There were children continually running past our table as we tried to relax (this happens inside, too). Please take note, it is undesirable inside or out. It is not appropriate restaurant behavior.

Heh.. good idea.. Or maybe just a doggie crate..

Perhaps I should temper my previous comment from "going nuts" to "being loud".. If we sit inside, the kids do sit and we're done with it.. If we're outside, I don't see any reason why they should not be able to play or roam around.. It isn't Vargo's..

And at our favourite sushi place, they're well behaved..

    Cheers!

  6. I'm guessing that you never skated on the temporary ice rink that was in front of the Wortham for the last several years.

Really? Man, I gotta get out more.. They put it on the concrete out there?

At least the Galleria/Mem Mall rinks don't have to compete with direct sunlight.. Plus.. I would venture to guess indoors it would never get more than 80 degrees.. I've had many a christmas day in shorts and t-shirt..

I guess I can "ice skate" in shorts and a t-shirt now too!

    :P

  7. I think the rain somehow throws them off.. They work o.k. from time to time, but it always seems when it rains.. you have to stop at EACH intersection..

Then you have an emergency vehicle go through, then everything screwed..

I still like the NS red and EW green.. rather than the silly "rolling" reds and greens..

    Think I'll just bike..

  8. Aye.. Polonia will give you some authentic Polish cuisine.. very good.. I wish their location was better.. the guy who owns it also owns the store next door.. The store has everything you would want for a polish kitchen as well.. & Delicia cookies! yum.

Can't get Polish beer in Texas due to our archaic labeling laws.. It's too strong, and should be considered I believe a "malt liquor" but that would not be accurate.. so, Czech is close enough.. ;) Get the "duze piwo", and you'll need two hands to hold the glass..

Polish church is just down the street on Blalock.. http://www.parafiahouston.com/ . The priest is nice, but I'm not catholic.

Polish society events can be found here: http://www.forum-polonia-houston.com/ Not like a high-nose society, but more like, come hang out with them if you're into international cultures..

Speaking of, the Polish film fest is going on this past weekend and upcoming weekend.. You'll find info at that the Forum Polonia.. All have English subtitles.

Editorial: I would say that most of the Poles who are in Houston are more of the intellectual types. Meaning: doctors, business owners, professors, than you might find in Chicago.. However those who came here in the 80's and 90's, their kids are not continuing the culture and society that those who left communism have.. I fear that the years are limited with the social aspect..

    Cześć!

  9. Do they ever. Two people walking in opposite directions literally have to brush past each other. And if you are on a bicycle on the sidewalk on the Waugh bridge (as is often the case given the speed cars go at on the roadway) the top of the railing is below your center of gravity. Scares the crap out of me when I cross on a bicycle.

There's a ton of green space in that area that has so much potential but it's just cut off from the rest of the city by high speed automotive traffic. I hope it can be imaginatively worked into the new wave of development in the area.

Yeah.. getting from the Heights to anywhere south to allen parkway/downtown via bike is quite frightening.. Waugh is supposed to have a bike path.. but it seems to disappear on the bridge over Memorial.. And I agree, the bridge "sidewalk" would take just one moment of inbalance before plunging to certain death and being run over multiple times.. It always freaks me out.. Or take your chances on the street.. but you won't get that "plunging to your death" feeling before you get run over multiple times..

    It's a wonder I'm still alive..

  10. Zippy, I think you mean Strake Jesuit is near St. Agnes. St. Johns is in River Oaks. All of those are great schools.

For elementary, St. Anne's at Kirby and Westheimer is our first choice. We are also trying for River Oaks Vanguard. we will settle for Travis or Harvard if we have to.

    Ah yes, thanks.

  11. hmm.. the Woods graduating class seems smaller than Awty's.. I'll have to put it on the list too as well.. Didn't know about it before..

Hopefully, as more kids of parents who care start attending the tax funded schools, maybe quality will increase.. Until then I'm not personally looking beyond public elementary school..
