  1. Yep - we're all much too afraid of the consequences these days to go around posting our names and addresses all over the place.
  2. Here's an amusement park/kiddie park I don't think I've seen mentioned on HAIF: Kiddie King Center 5103 Holmes Rd. Phone: OL 4-5512 From the Houston Chronicle, May 23, 1956: Little late to use the free ticket I guess...
  3. Well I understand the fried chicken was pretty awesome...
  4. 5. Awesome work 57Tbird - yeah I forgot about that map!
  6. By the photo on the cover, the China Clipper was obviously named after the Pan American airplane. Found some links at the China Clipper plane: Pan American World Airways China Clipper History According to the China Clipper site above, it was apparently one of three Martin M-130 "flying boats" built for Pan American Airways. It was used for a while by the Navy, carried uranium for the Manhattan Project, flown by Pan Am between Miami and Zaire and was finally destroyed in a bad landing in Trinidad in 1945.
  7. It isn't dated. By the look of it and the prices, I would have to guess 1940s or early 1950s. I'll bet some fairly accurate date could be established if there were some sort of price index for Houston area prices through the years. Also, does anyone know what years the China Clipper was open for business?? I noticed a couple of things NOT on the menu.... Where is the Egg Drop Soup and the General Tso's Chicken?
  8. Thought you all might like to see a menu I have from the China Clipper Restaurant. Thanks Subdude, for the suggestion. Postcard posted by Subdude. 1006 Milam Street Phone: Fairfax 1841
  9. Was this burger place shaped like a big barrel? I seem to remember one like that - don't remember the name. Don't know if it's still there...
  10. Wow, Subdude, thanks for all the scans!! So has the Museum of Houston come calling yet? lol The one from Michelangelos really cracked me up! I can only hope to be that groovy one day...
  11. I agree, unless they added a Historic Houston forum similar to HAIF. The potential historical resources they have must be huge. Who will be deciding what goes online and when? I saw that the next/first big project to put online was about the Port of Houston. No offense to anyone who thinks that a Port of Houston exhibit would be interesting, but my first thought was, "wow exciting... yawn". I think a page called the Subdude Postcard Collection would be really cool though!
  12. I'm sorta thinking it was based on several posts about it here and other places. There's a thread about it on the Houston Area Postcard club site. Someone said it was located at S. Main & Murworth - which would be inside the loop (currently). Found a small news item about it on Historic Houston: "July 1951: A gang riot erupts near Playland Park and 36 youths are jailed." For some reason I'm thinking of a racetrack that was further south on the Alt 90 section much closer to Stafford/Sugarland.
  13. Here's the link: Museum of Houston
  14. What was the name of the dirt track on South Main? I went there only once as a kid in the mid 70s and a car flipped over right in front of us. It was really cool! :-) That site sat vacant for a very long time and I think was still there in the mid to late 80s. Also, anyone know what the name of the motorcycle racing track that used to be at 59 & 610? I have seen some web sites here and there dedicated to old auto racing sites in various locations around the country but never any for the Houston area. Now that would be awesome!
  15. The stretch of Jones Road between Cypresswood and Louetta. Speed limit there is 30mph so the constables like to pick on that stretch of road.
  16. Wasn't the whole arcade/restaurant area called "Goodtime Charley's"? And I think the arcade was originally called "Wrongway Freeway".
  17. Wow, when was the party? Glad to hear Mr. Martin is still around. Yep, don't remember Mrs Moore. I *think* there were only two temporary buildings way back then.
  18. Yes, the "Beatles" etching was on the Waldo side of the school. I don't remember which sidewalk it was on. Are those "temporary" buildings still there? At least one of those was used for PE when I went there. The little baseball field was right behind them.
  19. 20. Sounds like a business opportunity for someone who would want to carry on a tradition...
  21. What I'm wondering is would they let you copy or scan any of the maps and photos? What they could do if they let you scan photos is every time you scan one they copy it to a database and put them online somewhere - that would reduce handling of the originals...
  22. Yes.... I didn't want to mention that because not only did I listen to Moby & Matthews, but I also listened to his talk show on 97 Rock which I remember being on Sunday nights like at 9 or 10pm. Perhaps he had one on Thurs also though... Of course he later went on to be an AM Rush Limbaugh clone until...
  23. Wow, they have some great photos in their gallery. If you mouse over the photos, they are dated and captioned. They very last photo is an aerial view of it in 1970. You can also zoom in on the photos.
  24. It was also during this time that 104 claimed to be a rock station. I used to have a 104 Rock sticker for a long time. But I'll always miss the good old KLOL... RIP.
