  1. Hey Subdude, did you happen to save a copy of this postcard? That image is no longer there.
  2. Ah, I missed a similar thread of posts on tiki/polynesian that was started last year.
  3. Trader Vic's Shamrock Hilton 6900 Main at Holcombe 1969 Menu 1970 Menu Undated Menu
  4. Don't know if this one qualified for the category, but the ad was really intriguing. This restaurant was in operation in the 1950s. Haowah Garden Restaurant 3018 South Wayside Drive
  5. This one's for SpaceAge. Chin's Poly-Asian 9530 South Main I've also seen this restaurant referred to as Albert Gee's Poly-Asian (not to be confused with the Poly-Asian West on Westheimer). These two items stood on either side of the entrance to the Poly-Asian and I *believe* originated from Hawaii in the 1960s. These were sold a while back on ebay. I tried to keep these dudes in Houston, but they went for over $400.... EACH! Other similar places in Houston: Trader Vic's in the Shamrock Hilton - 6900 S. Main Poly-Asian West - 5138 Westheimer Club Luau (don't know where or when this was) Club Luau 9530 South Main (upstairs from Albert Gee's Poly-Asian) This menu is supposedly from a Houston restaurant:
  6. Post that pic, man! Bingo! That one little picture says a lot. Thx!
  7. On the swingset?! Kinky. Thanks for the visuals...
  8. I will try to get some pics. If someone else lives around there and could get some pics, that would be awesome! (that's why I posted the address)
  9. Didn't know those three restaurant chains were all owned by the same corporation. Having eaten at all three restaurants I can say the food is about the same at all three! ;-) The only ones I'm nostalgic over are the old Monterey House buildings from when I was a little kid. Did used to like going to Poncho's (another chain) and raise the little flag to order sopapillas (yum). Don't really miss the food... Except for them being rock bottom cheap, never understood their appeal. Tortugas has the best concept of the mix, though.
  10. Thanks for all the great photos and ads!! Great thread! :)
  11. In case anyone is interested... I spotted what are supposedly the tin greeters that came from Prince's Drive-In on South Main at a local antique shop. There was one male carhop sign and one female carhop sign approximately 6' tall. They are at The Antique Gallery, 21127 Spring Town Drive. This is off of 2920 just west of 45. They are in a booth on the left side of the store along the back wall. The asking price was $5,000 for the pair. Unfortunately, I did not have my digital camera with me!
  12. WestUNative & 57TBird, Thanks for all the Sharpstown Country Club facts and figures - great info! I didn't know that little course had that much history. It was closed down for a while during the 70s and 80s and grew up a lot during that time. I'm sure it's a much more mature looking course these days. I fished a bunch of the ponds on that course both when it was originally open and during the time it was closed. Even rode my motorcyle across the old fairways and greens during the closed years (sorry to you golfers... )
  13. Interesting, I did not know that. Where did u dig up those photos? I recently found out that Jack Nicklaus once (more than once?) played Sharpstown Country Club in 1965 I think. Cool, huh?
  14. All is know is before the candy poisoning incident we used to literally fill up a paper grocery bag full of candy on Halloween. We had so much candy the bag would be ripping apart by the time we got home. Good times, good times... Then, the pixie sticks...
  15. oh, oops, i missed the "cow" reference. that post doesn't wrap around in my browser so I have to scroll to the right to see it. yeah, it's kinda harsh, but hey - enter a pageant....
  16. I don't see any one showing any disrespect - it seems everyone here is very appreciative of the photos. Doubt they're getting discussion anywhere else. You enter a beauty contest, you get stared at - it's what happens. These ladies seem to be having the time of their life. Wish my grandmother had been one of these contestants - that would have been cool!
  17. Would this be the same roller coaster? Dated May 1943. I believe I found this image online at the Smithsonian.
  18. From the Houston magazine that the Chamber of Commerce used to print.
  19. Found an image of the interior of the China Clipper restaurant: Also this text from the Houston Chamber of Commerce, February 1951: So, it seems that a 1940 map showed the China Clipper at 800 Miliam, but by 1951 at least, they had moved to 1006 Milam.
  20. Hmmm.... a car that could go back in time!! Man, that would make a great movie! just funnin...
  21. I always wondered why they premiered Urban Cowboy there. Any ideas? I saw Urban Cowboy there and others (Flash Gordon, The Elephant Man etc) and always that it was just an OK theater. Did Mickey Gilley own Gaylynn's? So this Rice grocery store at Bellaire and Burning Tree - was it right behind the Dairy Queen? Was it sort of smallish? I used to walk my dog (a rottweiler) over there when I was ten and tie him to the newspaper stand while I went in to get milk or whatever. I never could recall the name of the grocery store. Was there a laundry mat or hair stylist right next to it? Directly to the right of the Dairy Queen there was a small gas station...
  22. Wow, interesting video! It looks like there's quite a bit of water in parts of the two formations. Also, on the large "cross" shaped one it looks like the water is contained in a ditch that runs in a ring around the formation and in a cross shape through the middle of the circle. I'm basing this on the fact that the outer ring of grass looks darker than the rest... I wonder if there was some industrial use at that spot at one time? Maybe some equipment that was removed (water tanks??) and the area filled in with gravel or something??
