  9. Then again people y'all putting houston with other cities. New york has their own style, chicago has their on style, and houston has their own style. Houston is different toward those cities. Houston is in their own world. I don;t see no problems, cause theu building these apartments for a reason. People don't care where they built it at, people still going to spend their money for a place to live. I would. So who cares, be happy midtown getting something. geez. 12. Freddy vs.Jason vs.Michael? Posted on Sun, 7-Nov-2004 I see this happening about as much as I envision my credit card balance suddenly being wiped by a 'mysterious stranger', never the less, it's something chewy for genre fans to nibble on. Robert Englund (that's 'Freddy Krueger' for anyone that's never floated down Blockbuster's Horror Aisle) tells IESB that if the "Freddy vs Jason vs Ash" idea doesn't come off (which it apparently isn't - according to coffin-mesher Sam Raimi) the studio has an idea to add Michael Myers into the mix instead. "There's a back-up, with Michael Myers, where we would do a period piece with Jamie Lee Curtis as a sort-of valium addicted mom with a goth daughter who move away...guess we're they move? Springwood..guess who's there?..Freddy and Jason..guess who comes to look for her? Michael Myers". For more from Trooper Typecast, including a bit on his new reality show, click this link. Funnily enough, Bloody Disgusting is nixing the words out of Bobby's mouth, saying "I just received word from New Line who says that this is totally untrue".

  19. Black voters turn out in record numbers 06:58 PM CDT on Friday, October 29, 2004 By Wendell Edwards / 11 News Click to watch video Election officials say nearly 345,000 people had voted in Harris County through Thursday. That's a jump of more than 116,000 voters from the 2000 election. The numbers are also big for minority voters. At the Power Center, in southwest Houston, dozens lined up to vote early -- only to realize they had to wait. In some cases, the wait was nearly two hours. "It's good to see a lot of people turning out, but the lines are just real long," says early voter Carolyn Davis. Poll workers say it's been that way most of the week at the predominately Democratic precinct. Carol Stanley believes she knows why. "I think people were really upset about what happened in Florida and they are determined to get out and make every vote count," says barber Carol Stanley. "Well, I guess they want to see a new president," says voter Kirby Davis. In the last presidential election, accusations of voter disenfranchisement throughout Florida resulted in complaints of election irregularities affecting minority voting. Political experts say what happened then, could fuel a large black turnout across the nation for this election. "Right now, we've got an election that we know is very close. No one wants to miss it. And another big important factor, the candidates and political parties are working to turnout that vote. No question they are going to be there," political analyst Bob Stein says. At the headquarters of the Harris County Republican Party, turnout in predominantly Republican precincts is strong as well. "We are seeing studies showing that African-Americans are twice more likely to vote for the President, President Bush, this time around, than they were four years ago, so it's encouraging," says Harris County Republican Party Executive Director Court Koening. It is encouraging for both political parties, who say the black turnout may be the deciding factor. Those numbers will tell the story. All early voting numbers, and the breakdown, won't be out until after polls close on Election Day.

  23. Next incarnation for aging eyesore Condominiums may take place of hotel rooms By NANCY SARNOFF Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle A longtime downtown Houston eyesore, which was once the high-rise home to a transcendental meditation society, has been sold to an investment group that wants to turn it into condominiums. ADVERTISEMENT A partnership led by Don Nicholas of LandCo Properties purchased the 30-story Days Inn building on St. Joseph Parkway between Milam and Travis on the southern end of downtown. "An ugly duckling downtown will become a swan," said Nicholas, whose group is still studying what to do with the building. The property was built in the 1970s as a Holiday Inn and later converted to a Days Inn before it was taken over by a group led by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who gained worldwide fame in the 1960s when he became the spiritual adviser for the Beatles. Located on the south side of downtown, the property was never successful as a hotel because it sat too far away from downtown corporations, hotel analysts have said. Nicholas and his partners have experience redeveloping old buildings. The group converted a structure in Colorado Springs to CityWalk Downtown, a residential building. Units were priced from the low $100,000s to more than $300,000. Nicholas said the Days Inn property reminded him of a larger version of the Colorado project. "It doesn't have a beautiful view of the Rockies, but it still has beautiful views of the city side and park side," he said. Tepid sales of downtown condominiums haven't stopped developers that see Houston as an up-and-coming residential market. Last month, Silvestri Investments purchased an old brick warehouse just blocks from Minute Maid Park, where it is building out at least 50 condominiums. And Randall Davis is planning to convert his St. Germain apartments on Main Street into for-sale units. He's selling the apartments for $180,000 on average and offering 100 percent financing. "I think people would like the opportunity to buy a condo in downtown Houston," he said. "Especially if it's priced right." The Maharishi, the founder of transcendental meditation, bought the Days Inn property in the early 1990s for a reported $2 million. It was renamed Heaven on Earth Inn, and the Maharishi's brand of meditation was taught there. But the hotel fell into disrepair and became a dingy blemish on downtown's skyline. It has sat vacant since the late 1990s. Adam Brackman and Jeff Kaplan of Wulfe & Co. brokered the sale. nancy.sarnoff@chron.com
