  1. Hey everyone. I've been trying to move to houston for several years now. It seems like everytime i'm in Houston, my allergies and eczema flares up. I don't know if its because my body isn't adapted to Houston's altitude/climate but its just something i've been wondering. Houston also has alot of trees which i hear does cause itching. Colorado's dry climate is no walk in the park because of the dryness but Houston has more pollutants which i think will be a bigger issue.

Any info would greatly be appreciated.

  2. You are not going to get enough real snow in Houston for skiing. Besides, think how great this will be, people will no longer go to Colorado in the winter to ski, just stay home. Also, think of playing in the snow in the very long and hot summer, cool!

I guess. I'm still waiting on a few Dallas forumers to tell us how hypocritical we are for being excited about this coming to Houston when we slammed it to death when it was going to Fort Worth. Sorry Mods if that sounds like trying to steer this into a DFW Vs. Houston war. But i am expecting someone to point that out..

  3. Dallas has seven times as many miles as Houston's and where almost right behind them on ridership for their whole system, but I am not exactly sure on what you are basing "out do".

I sometimes share citykid's frustration with the slow progress of mass transit in Houston but his basis for arguments show he has no idea what he's talking about. If Houston's little 7.5 mile line can get more ridership than Dallas's entire system, that says something. Don't blame Houston or Metro, Blame the political leaders.

  4. Great post! Thanks for inserting some actual facts into the discussion.

There's definitely some conspiracy as to why Houston hasn't gotten rail. The Political leaders are obviously looking out for their buddies in the oil business trying to keep their pockets full. Just think about it, if more people use rail rather than their cars, that's gonna cut in to the profits of the oil/gas business. I believe Houston will get more rail eventually but it has to fight harder for it.

Citykid09, quit being so hard on Houston light rail. Houston is doing everything possible to try to get more rail. Cut METRO a break!

  5. Richmond rail had this to report in their latest newsletter -

Culberson is no longer on the Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee and hasnt been since January.

We know many RichmondRail supporters have written Rep. John Culberson to urge him to support rail on Richmond. We also know many of you were disappointed to be rebuffed by Culberson's indifferent form letter reply.

Here's the surprise: as recently as March 29, Rep. Culberson has told constituents that "I have a responsibility to the Houston region to help improve our entire transportation network as the only Texan on the Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee." But it turns out that since January 11th, Culberson is NOT on the Transportation subcommittee anymore. He's now just one minority member out of 66 on the Appropriations committee, which should severely constrain his attempts to hijack the federal transit planning process! See this press release for details.

Freshman Texas Congressman Ciro Rodriguez has replaced Culberson on the House Appropriations Transportation subcommittee. And three other Texans -- Chet Edwards, Kay Granger, and John Carter -- all serve on Appropriations, too. It can't hurt to let them all know that when Federal Transit eventually awards funding to METRO for rail on Richmond, we are counting on Appropriations to approve it, in spite of their colleague's hangups.

I believe this but where's the source?

This is good news but knowing Houston's luck, the guy replacing Culberson will block all attempts at light rail too.

  6. You guys never cease to amaze me!!!!! Yall insist on finding something in Houston That is in some way better than The world Trade Center in Dallas....when it's been said that nothing compares...........That was not the purpose for this thread. but of course Dallas is always inferior to Houston............We all know that.

Relax Dallasboi. I'm sure Jax was just using that as a comparison to show that simply having a WTC in a city does not automatically make you more global. I guess if he had compared Houston to Chicago, maybe the ol' Texas Rilvary wouldn't have come up.

  7. Did you read my earlier response? Define what you mean by a WTC. If you mean the activies carried on at the Dallas WTC, no it's not comparable. The port is a port, not a wholesale center or place for offices for importers.

actually i saw your comment on that after i made that comment. thanks!!!

  8. hmm with a title like "does it make it more of a global city than Houston?" not sure if i believe you. as far as i know, houston had one over by annunciation for yrs but i think it moved somewhere else downtown

well as far as your remark trying to turn this title into a war, i edited my post so it didnt just be a square off between Dal and Hou.

But does the POH serve just like a WTC

  9. Hey guys, i'm sorry to start a comparison thread and is no way meant for trying to bring up a Dallas VS Houston fight. So to those who plan on making this a fight, please don't post to this thread.

I'm just curious about the Dallas Word Trade Center. Why is it they have a WTC and Houston doesn't? Could Houston's equivalent be the Port of Houston since there's alot of goods and trades directy with other countries? I know Dallas is a more convention city so i don't know if that has something to do with it.

Just something i've been curious about.

  10. Well the Dallas Victory VS HP thread has hit the # 3 spot for the largest threads on HAIF at 830 posts, displacing Houston 2006 season to hit #4.

I always thought this thread was kind of fun. It's sort of like watching population #s for cities outgrow eachother. ( Like San Antonio outgrowing Dallas :P )

  11. It's closer to 5 than 15-20min. Last time this question came up I timed it from the West End (OTB) to somewhere near the office building going up and it was a hair under 5 minutes as I recall.

Last time I was in Victory plaza it was during the Dallas film festival and it was pretty packed, but I wouldn't expect anything like that regularly for years. A lot of construction will have to be done before it is just events that fill it up. I think it will happen but it will not be handed to them, they'll need to work for it.

    Jason

I'm not trying to keep a fued going here seeing how i think both of these developments are awesome. But i have to call you out on the 5 minute walk claim. My girlfriend and i actually walked and timed the area from AA center to West End. It wasn't 5 minutes. We weren't lolly-gagging either, we were walking at a brisk pace. I understand how you can say that the walk doesn't feel that long because there's things to look at on the way like the new restaurants/bars, W Hotel and the club beneath it, and the House of Blues. However, i do think its a 5 minute walk from the Hooters to West End but definitely not from AA center.

  12. ^^^and furthermore Victory and Uptown Dallas will have different vibes/beats. They're both Master-planned communities which will give the overall feel of something a little more suburban. Not at all saying that's a bad thing but i think Houston's downtown will definitely be more "urban" mainly because of everything closer in to proximity. Victory Plaza AA is at least a 15-20 minute walk from the West End. I know this to be a fact. I was in Dallas at the end of march and we were riding DARTrail from Mockingbird Station to downtown Dallas. We accidently ended up on the wrong train taking us to Victory and it let us off in front of the AA center so we decided to walk Houston Street to the West End. The walk was quite pleasant and exciting though because we got a glimpse of everything going up.

  13. Victory definitely looks better but looks aren't everything. Not to sound like i'm jabbing ,but i just think that the stuff in downtown Houston is already in place and HP will be like filling one of the last few holes. New development will more than likely spur around the HP development and the remaining parking lots on the east side of downtown will be filled.

Downtown Houston has been building and extending downtown out for years. Aside from residential development, Victory is one large project that's basically catching downtown Dallas up with Houston's downtown.

They both are going to be impressive projects but i just predict that with most of everything in place in downtown Houston, HP, Main Street and all of Houston east developments will flow better. Victory will look better.

This is coming from someone not from Houston or Dallas.
