  1. The streets are listed in the first rendering.  And could you maybe take the pics out of your quote so it makes the thread smaller and less to load.

    done!

But how many of you guys think this will get built? I think it will because i think the same thing is happening in downtown Houston as i observed happening in downtown Denver in the later part of the 90s.

The Denver Pavilions opened 7 years ago and has been a seed for more growth along the 16th Street Mall. BTW, 16th Street Mall is pretty LIVE on Saturdays, full of shoppers and outers.

  2. And how long have we been BECOMING a tourist attraction? All of this BECOMING has gotten us as the least tourist friendly large city in Texas. Why did Houston decide to BECOME after everyone else?

Those new side walks on Main in Midtown are how old? And HOW WIDE are they for pedestrians? Excuse me but, " is Travis and the other streets that run parallel to it going through the Midtown neighborhood, a freeway or are they neighborhood streets that are pedestrian friendly since it's a "neighborhood? And haven't they been newly reconstructed? Were the planners thinking of the residences of the area as well as those that would be rushing to get out of the city?" Why didn't the midtown residences speak loudly about the CVS design near the urban post development across the street? Don't they want Midtown to be more urban(sarcasm)? Could the Calais have had at least one side of retail at the bottom? How many more affordable residences are planned for Downtown right now, and when will it be revealed to the public? Is that spanking new 20ft Vietnamese memorial in the middle of the parking lot of a strip mall evidence that we are moving in the right direction? Are we making some crucial mistakes in this journey to BECOME a tourist attraction? With every 1 step forward, are we making 2 backward?

RedScare, I don't think you get the point that some including myself are trying to make. No one is saying they want a triple loop rollercoaster running down Main Street. But if we are to become a true world class city, we MUST look to cities like San Francisco, Chicago, New York, etc., that are successful at it, to see what the WORLD'S standard for "World Class" is, and at the VERY least consider it. If you desire to become world class and one of the standards to becoming that is having a Bookstore in your city core with lots of glass in the front with bright lights, don't fight it because of an attitude of, "this is Houston and not Chicago". Keep up with the times and see if it can be successful here as well. And definitely DON'T wait until 15 years after everyone else has it, then open one in the name of, "oh Houston was just waiting until everyone else had one so we could do it the RIGHT way" B.S.

I know there are things coming down the line and some that I may not even know about, but there have been in the past and even recent opportunities to lay the groundwork for Houston going to that next level, and we will turn and do something short-sighted and squander it. For someone who has a passion for our city, this scares me.

very well put velvetj. it's people who have shortsighted views for our city who serve as reason as to why Houston's progress is so slow compared to that of other cities.

  3. I think Houston skyline is almost ok at night for the most part, but the White Christmas lights on every building doesn't do it any justice. Christmas lights to me just show that the city took absolutely no time in decorating the skyline at night.

  4. I just called the number folks! A man answered. He sounded more friendly than a few of you made the lady out to sound. I asked him for a few details, pretending to be a business proposer. He stated the Website hasn't been updated because they had been running behind schedule.

I asked him if the project was a go. He stated that they are spending alot of money and investing alot to insure the project is a go. That's all he could tell me. Soo, I'm hoping so, for Houston.

  5. I would like to put my 2 cents in on this one. I am sort of biased on this one.

First, i feel that Downtown should be the premeir destination over anything else in this city, with the amentities, urban style living, and everything else. END OF STORY. Downtown is more than likely going to be the first major attraction before anything else in this city due to its massive size. Sadly to say, there are many close-minded people who like to judge a city by its downtown only.

While Uptown is a good thing to have in this city, the fact that its located in West Houston runs the risk of it being missed by those petty visitors who want to deem Houston as UGLY based on their first impressions off I-45. I love Uptown because Uptown actually rivals many cities downtowns, even our own.

I think a city's vibrancy should be more than one area, it should be primarily Downtown but not Downtown only. Driving through downtown Houston can be quite depressing sometimes. It looks as if it has gone ignored for a while. Some of the areas surrounding downtown such as areas off North Main Street and east of the George R. Brown convention center look absolutely HORRIBLE. Some of the older buildings such as the ones that look like old warehouse shacks gotta go. That's why i'm not against uptown getting things like this because let's face it, aside from the skyline, Uptown gives an overall better impression of Houston as both exciting/vibrant than downtown right now. But hopefully with the spark of retail that downtown might be getting, hopefully things will continue to change.

  6. don't worry guys. I agree with you on the christmas lights on downtown thing. I think the city should go all or nothing when it comes to downtown lighting.

Thanks DJ. I hope you all signed the petition because i'm gonna get this out to the next City Council Meeting.

Large Texas, can you get me access to your part of the signature page? I'm gonna add your list to my list of signatures

  7. i don't think everyone is necessarily saying we gotta do all neon like DALLAS. But i'ma tell yall what MY BIGGEST problem is with Houston's lighting scheme. And I know i've said it before but i'll say it once AGAIN but I hate that almost every building in Houston has to have the SAME OL' white christmas lights surrounding the rooftops. Now that's just ME, i can't speak for everyone else like C2H but i don't want Houston to be so subtle and dull

Not you or anyone else on this forum will convince me that Houston's nightlit skyline belongs in the Traveler's magazine.

Tierwester, i applaud you. You're not afraid to speak your mind and i respect that. I've been kinda nervous to emphasize some of things like you did in fear of being ridiculed. And yes the white xmas lights on every building is very BORING. Finally someone who feels as adimate about it as i do.

Corection: Lightenup from the old Houston forum. Can't forget you. You related to me on this issue too, wherever or whoever you are these days ^_^

  8. i think they're awesome. thanks for sharing. If anyone else wants to help me out on getting this petition to the next city council meeting. please let me know. It's kind of unfortunate because City Council meetings are mainly held at 1pm and those are working hours.

Large TEXAS, i've started asking around trying to get signatures of my own. How many signatures did you say you had got again?

  9. Like some posters here said, I like downtown Houston's more straightforward lights that speckle the skylime.  I don't think it needs that colorful green neon or lighted x-dots or blinking dandelion tower such as Dallas.  That look is good for Dallas but for Houston, the muscular outline of the skyline is majestic as it is!  The small accents on top of some Houston towers are sufficient then.

i feel completely the opposite. Maybe its just me but i have had people to agree with me that Houston's skyline is mostly drab the way it is now at night. There are some buildings that do their part in lighting the skyline but some ruin the overall effect.

I find it quite offensive and frustrating when i visit some cities like Austin, Dallas, Philladelphia, Atlanta, and Chicago and they can light their buildings in a tasteful style, while many of Houston's buildings use the same ol' boring white christmas light scheme.

I would definitely like to see things change for a city like Houston. I do agree with you on the uptown skyline though, i love how that's lit up, but it's not centrally located like downtown and might run the risk of being missed by visitors coming into town.

    P.S. Welcome to the forum

  10. well grey when i don't think you meant it offensive. It just sounded like you were hyped up about the petition and was trying to sound encouraging. But any help would be appreciated.

    Tierwestah, You a jokesta huh?

Large TX, i've printed out the petition and i'm ready for it to go out but like i said, i think it might go better if you can somehow e-mail the signature page to me. Also i would like to help out with the musuem one you drew up too. I would really like to get a Black Arts musuem here in Houston.

  11. OK Large, consider it done. I do think i would have a better chance of the building owners considering it though if you could somehow provide me with the list of signatures. Is there a way you can e-mail them to me as an attachment or something? I'll go ahead and print the petition.

  12. I'm sorry. I have never received a PM from you C2H. I cannot say the petition was a success. I asked if anyone on the forum would help distribute the petition if I were to write it.

PS If anyone has links to photos for various buildings downtown I would like to include them in the petition. Aslo, any skyline photos at night would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If there's anything more i could do to help, please let me know. Maybe you can e-mail me the signed petition and i can present it to the next City Council meeting. Do you know how to get in contact with Central Houston?

  13. When i had started a topic like this before the old HAIF forum crashed, i had drawn quite a few supporters on this issue to change the way some of those buildings show themselves at night.

LargeTexas had even drawn up a petition for us to sign but i haven't heard anything about it or any updates in regard to, or if he even submitted the thing. I've tried PMing him numerous times on it and i am never successful trying to get thru to him. Please Large, let us know somethin!!! :P

However, It is quite embarassing watching the Houston rockets game on TV and the TV showing all the buildings around the Toyota Center w/ tacky Christmas lights when we see crowns on Atlanta and other cities like Seattle who take a little more pride in lighting their structures.

But when i drive around many areas of Houston at night, there are other skylines that contain buildings that use the same white christmas light scheme as the buildings do in downtown. Ever been to Greenspoint? Even TMC. The only two skylines i think aren't too bad with this are uptown and Greenway Plaza.

But I'm curious as to why that seems like the only or "main" lighting scheme in Houston. It doesn't make Houston appealing at night, it just makes it seem boring. Kudos though to all the buildings that try though. But when it comes to this, that old saying "one bad apple spoils a bunch" comes in to mind.

But i'm w/ greystone and YazukaIce, some buildings owners need to get a clue and realize that Christmas time year around is not tasteful, it's not classy, it's tacky. And Metro Matt, i'm with you, i wish the Wedge Tower still lit up the sides like the BOA tower in Dallas. I still have no idea why they stopped that or why they at least don't even do it for special events.

  14. I think downtown Houston has a lot of potential. I like what they did with Main Street as far as lights and glitz go. They just need to keep it going. Wells Fargo Plaza is decently lit up at night. Oh why did they have to start back with the Chase Tower lighting? it seems like Houston don't wanna be all shiny and purty like Dallas or Austin. Houston presents the I don't give a Fu*k mentality and i guess it's happy with that. You know kind of like the ugly girl in school who was really down once you got to know her. The Four Seasons Hotel downtown needs a wrecking ball right thru it in my opinion and they need to start over from scratch. Hilton America's you're fine. All of the Houston Centers, except no.5 and Hyatt Regency hotel, sorry but the 60's style brick layered buildings are so out now. It's time to either repaint or get more window installments. Wedge Tower, i think should go back to the outline. i always loved that. To all the buildings with the white band of Christmas lights surrounding the top! TACKY! It looks so Fort Worth! It might work for Fort Worth but definitely not for a muscle bound city like Houston. Gotta do betta than that!!!

  15. AHH i say TEAR HER DOWN. it's not serving any purpose. It was best said to me at church the other day, " Nobody or anything can expect to make progress if they are still holding on to old luggage". Well the Astrodome is old luggage, we gotta make room for the new luggage. The eighth wonder of the world is a thing of the past, yesteryear- time to let it go.
