  1. I find Facebook pretty useful because as a grad student, most people I know are on it (including my PhD advisor). It's a good place to post photos or links I find interesting to share with people that I know. It's also a good way to keep up with people from the past (old friends, old roommates, people from high school and undergrad)..I'm not into friend collecting and I always reject people I don't know in real life who try to add me as a "friend". But I don't really get the point of Twitter. Isn't it like Facebook status updates without the rest of Facebook? Is there anything more that Twitter can do that Facebook can't?

Twitter is a LOT like Facebook status updates without all the other baggage of Facebook. Don't get me wrong, I like both, but I find Twitter to be more like status updates combined with email combined with a newsgroup. I use TweetDeck and you can see your general follower comments in one column, replies that others have made to you in another, direct replies from/to people in another and so on. It's a lot like a newsgroup in that respect.

I have found that I do not like the Twitter website all that much as it is kind of lame and confusing. IMHO, you really need a client (like TweetDeck) to understand and enjoy Twitter.

  2. I always wondered, why not stack freeways? When space to build out runs dry, build up!

Imagine 290 being a double decked freeway, with the upper freeway being for longer, further commutes (such as 1960 to 8 to 610) and the lower freeway being for shorter trips (basically like it is now). The expense would be greater, but it would work.

Hopefully one day all you'll have to do is get in your vehicle, punch in your destination and the car takes you. With a computer controlled navigation system that allow all the cars to "talk" to each other therefore providing a high speed transit, 100% efficiency, with better route planning and no human error. Could be reality some day. Would be nice.

That would be cool. I like all those air-ways of the future in movies like Metropolis and Fifth Element. Of course, flying cars would have to be invented too.

But seriously, I want some super high-speed highways like 100+ mph to get from downtown to FM 1960 in 5 minutes or less.

    We need a Houston-bahn!

  3. I'm going to be in Houston over July 4th weekend. I could use some good ole stick-to-your-ribs soul food.

I've heard good things about this place. Anyone eaten there. How was it? I'm dying to try it.

I also heard they moved from their current location. Seems like I read a newish review of them in HoustonPress.com

    http://blogs.houstonpress.com/eating/2008/...t_soul_food.php

I've been a couple of times to the old location and having grown up on soul food can attest that theirs is good, but not the best I've ever experienced.

  4. The ad is cute enough. The cowboy and wrestler costumes are funny. I haven't had the 'Texican' burger itself though - you just know it would never live up to real Tex-Mex! Has anyone had it?

Last time I had a BK lunch, it almost came up afterwards. Not sure what they use for beef, but real cow it ain't.

Or maybe it is real cow, just now the part that is usually made for burgers...

  5. The Greater Houston Partnership's Transit Planning Committee conducted a survey that basically stated we'd be facing an average three-hour commute within the next 26 years due to unmitigated growth in and around "rural" areas, especially the Grand Parkway corridor. http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/20...ng_crossley.php Great. <_< Then again, I guess that's the tradeoff for wanting a cheaply-constructed home in an area with marginally good schools.

I believe their 26 year plan is off by a decade. If growth keeps occuring at this pace and no rapid rails or bus servies running to where people go, then it is going to happen sooner.

  6. Some are kinda nice. I don't like carrying more junk than I have to. When I do I sling my utilitarian Swiss Army laptop bag over my shoulder.

To each his own, I guess.

  7. Oh, I failed to mention before that the woman who threw the container of food out on the feeder road in front of me was Asian.

Not meaning to change the tone of the thread or change the subject at hand, but injecting race when it is not really necessary annoy me at times, despite the intention.

When I have more time, I will post a story about the white male who cut me off on the tollway yesterday. <_<

I was wondering about the race issue to in the original post. But I was trying to understand if it was integral to the story or not. The verdict is still out.

And the whole thuggish part ... that was weird.

  8. My wife and I stopped at Subway in Sealy once to grab sandwiches for the road. We got a few miles down the interstate and when we opened our sandwiches something smelled really bad, so we didn't eat them. Did want to stink up the car, either, so I just rolled down my window (she was driving) and tossed our sandwiches out. I didn't know that I had hit the car behind us until he flew past us in the other lane a few seconds later giving the one finger salute. I felt terrible when I realized what had happened. I would have been pretty pissed myself.

My mom from small town West Texas refers to those ramps as "high and nars" (narrow). She hates driving on them and will usually hide her eyes if she's in the car when I drive over them.

She also used to get REALLY scared if she was in the car with me or my wife on the freeway at night - almost to the point of shrieking and crying at every lane change. To those of us who live here, it's done without a second thought but I can see how it would be intimidating to people who aren't used to it, for sure.

The disturbing part is why did the sandwiches smell so bad. I am now suspect of Subways. Ick.

  9. Indianola, down on Matagorda Bay, was Texas's second biggest port in the 19th century. Until it was destroyed by a hurricane in 1875. They rebuilt, but another hurricane struck in 1886. During the storm, most of the town burned. So Indianola was abandoned. Read about it here.

During Hurricane Rita, a fire broke out in Galveston. The HFD helped--driving their topheavy trucks over the causeway in heavy wind.

All sorts of bad stuff can happen during a big storm.

If somebody's going to commit arson, they can find a more convenient time than during a hurricane. And I doubt they'd bring along a 4 year old.

    It's just you.

    I suppose so.

  10. Not at all. Think how much they could make though if they taxed that.

Anyway, I didn't know about the cigar tax. I'll gladly pay it though, I'll usually have one on a Sat night with a single malt on the porch. That's definitely worth 40c more a week to me....

Yeah, but most cigarette smokers I know are definitely smoking more than 1 cigarette a week. Most I know are at least a pack a day.
