In a 7-yr stretch, from say 2014 to 2021, the 10-block stretch of Shepherd from 14th to 24th, stands to be one of the most radical transformations of any stretch of major thoroughfare inside the loop. There's still a lot more to come, I think, from small infill developments to whatever will replace C&D on 22nd.

More on the rebirth of The Ready Room in Houston at 2626 White Oak Dr.

    From Houston Press last year:

The Ready Room,  2626 White Oak

Ritual bartender Chris Morris, who is currently in London competing in the USBG and Bombay Sapphire world finals for the Most Imaginative Bartender competition, tells the Press that his new bar, which is taking over a former gas station in the Heights will have a focus on quality cocktails along with blues and jazz. "The goal is to create a relaxed atmosphere with an elevated level of drink," Morris says. "People can expect a good amount of housemade ingredients, a small curation of local beer, friendly and bar staff, and a menu of 20 to 30 original drinks."  Opening date is still unknown, but planned for sometime this fall.

More details and updates on Railway Heights at 8200 Washington Ave in Houston.

    Anticipated opening

A Railway Heights Market vendor shared on Facebook an opening target for Railway Heights Market and the lawn. Both, including the beer garden and dog park bar are part of the first phase of the Railway Heights development. The estimated opening will be around the end of the 2020 first quarter or early second quarter.

Ideally, the first phase is anticipating to open sometime in March 2020. March has been the estimated opening date since late spring, but it's a date Company of Nomads and vendors keep repeating. Prior opening dates were summer 2019 and fall 2019 (November), but Railway Heights pushed those dates back because it was nowhere near completed.

    Additional food vendors

More food vendors have been picked for stalls on the second floor food hall. There will be a taco vendor obviously, churro vendor, po'boy vendor, a Jamaican or Caribbean food vendor, a vender serving Vietnamese grilled pork & rice ( bun thit nuong ), and an Indian street food vendor.

Other vendors known were discussed on page 1 and 2 in this thread.

I don't know who will be part of the hawker market yet.

    Grocery

Also besides Black Hill Ranch, I don't know of other tenants for the grocery portion. I've heard rumors of Houston Dairymaids being the cheesemongers, but nothing concrete.

I haven't not heard or found any details about the possible distillery rumored to open here.

Found new information about Market at Houston Heights, 1533 N Shepherd Dr ( 1533 North Shepherd ), on Loopnet.  It's the site of insurance Used Cars.

    - The Market at Houston Heights is a new development delivering in the Summer of 2018 (Loopnet listings shows Fall of 2018) that will serve the surrounding neighborhoods and businesses in the eclectic Heights area.

    - The project will sit on approximately 75,000 square feet of land, which will allow for abundant surface parking, an amenity that is difficult to find in these dense areas of Houston.

    - The future retail development fronts Shepherd Drive, which has started to transform into a corridor for unique chef driven concepts and high end restaurants.

Back in my young and skinny days, it was The Ready Room (or perhaps Reddy Room), with Milton Hopkins as the house band on Fridays (or maybe Saturdays, or both) (back then we were not as... shall we say... restrained in our habits, so particulars get a little vague).  Good ol' roots Houston R & B, and his backup singers could really belt it out.

Since the previous incarnation had a level of cleanliness that rivaled Lola's (the bar on Fairview, not the restaurant on 11th), eating wasn't something you did there.  It'll be interesting to see what turns out this time.

We’re working with Method Architecture to build a space worthy of our Garden Oaks/Oak Forest home, and we look forward to serving our beer in Greater Heights – and eventually Greater Houston – restaurants and bars.”

From The Leader earlier this week:

In 1964, the cornerstone was laid for Oak Forest Masonic Lodge #1398 at 4721 Watonga Blvd. Chartered two years before, the Oak Forest masons had been meeting at the Fairbanks Masonic Lodge before they got their own building.

More than 50 years later, they are on the move again.

Kevin Staloch with Staloch Realty Services said the 2-acre lot and 7,000 square foot building are for sale.

Longtime freemason Joe Messa, the senior officer for Lodge #1398, said the organization decided to put the building up for sale after much deliberation. He said the roof and air conditioning unit need attention, and the decline of dues-paying members made paying for such repairs difficult.

...As for the Oak Forest freemasons, Messa said they will remain together as the plan is to rent space at another lodge in the vicinity.

From CultureMap today on the Hickory Hollow building at 101 Heights Blvd, Houston.

Hickory Hollow may have closed its location at 101 Heights Blvd., but the building that housed the beloved restaurant will continue to serve legendary chicken fried steaks. They’ll just be served by one of Houston’s most acclaimed chefs.

Ronnie Killen, Houston’s king of meat, has leased the property from local real estate developer Braun Enterprises for a new concept he’s simply calling Killen’s. It will be the chef’s first restaurant within the Loop and his second inside the Houston city limits. Over the weekend, Killen floated the possibility of opening in a restaurant in the space on social media; in actuality, he's had his eye on the property for months and completed the deal on Friday.

Unlike his other restaurants, no three letter suffix is required to explain the concept. Instead, Killen’s will consolidate under one roof the Southern-style comfort food that has been present at all of his restaurants in various forms. Whether it’s the fried shrimp that have always been one of the best dishes at Killen’s Steakhouse, the chicken fried steak that’s a favorite on the dinner menu at Killen’s Barbecue, or the brisket enchiladas that are a customer favorite at Killen’s TMX, they’ll all have a home at Killen’s.

“I’m excited,” Killen tells CultureMap. “It’s the best of what we do. We’ll have some barbecue items. We’ll have a beef rib, fried chicken, chicken fried steak. It’s good comfort food.”

Killen says he’s still working on the details. Sides like mac and cheese and the green beans from Killen’s Barbecue are obvious additions. He’s also got memories of eating soul food at a Pearland restaurant called Big Mama’s that served braised pork chops and dirty rice; he thinks he could put his spin on those dishes, too. Specials like meatloaf and versions of Killen’s staples like pork belly will also be included.

...When the restaurant will open is also still uncertain. Technically, Killen’s contract with Braun gives him three weeks to inspect the building and walk away if it doesn’t meet his standards, but he doesn’t expect to find anything that would trigger that option. After all, Hickory Hollow only closed in January. Depending on the timing required to receive permits, Killen's could open in as little as four months.

Changes will be fairly straightforward: new paint, new floors, reconfiguring the restrooms for better flow, and opening up the kitchen (a Killen’s design signature). He’ll swap out the restaurant’s current barbecue pit for a newer model. With construction complete on the new Killen’s Steakhouse in The Woodlands, his contractor is ready to begin work as soon as possible.

“We should be able to do what we need to do with what they’re giving us [in ‘tenant improvement’ funds],” Killen says. “They gave us the option to purchase [the building]. That’s what took us a long time to get it in the lease. They’re excited to have us there, and with how many other locations they have, it’ll be a good relationship with them.”

The feeling is mutual, according to Braun leasing director Zach Wolf. “We are thrilled to be bringing Ronnie Killen to the inner loop,” he says. “Hickory Hollow was an institution for 40 years, and we know Killen’s will continue that tradition.”

More on the closing date for  Hickory Hollow at 101 Heights Blvd.

    From CultureMap Houston

The clock is ticking for inner loop-dwelling fans of Hickory Hollow. The Texas comfort food restaurant will close its Washington Avenue location on January 13, general manager Joseph Boehm tells CultureMap.

...Still, those who want a memento of the Heights location have the opportunity to purchase some of the memorabilia. As Boehm and Riedel decide which signs and other knickknacks won't make the journey, they're putting them up for sale. More items will be available closer to the closing date.

As for the building's future, that's still undecided. Braun director of leasing Zach Wolf tells CultureMap that the developer is in active negotiations with several interested parties. With lots of parking and a prime location that will soon be across the street from a new H-E-B, it's a desirable property.
