I would hope that folks take to the streets with pitchforks and torches when and if the idea of redeveloping the Dinner Bell ever gains any traction.

Update on the renovation and build out of Symbolic Brewing Co., the brewery at 5521 Navigation Blvd in Houston:

Someone asked a week ago on Instagram or Facebook about the progress. Symbolic said it was slowly progressing.

A month later and more progress, but it's been gradual.  Some nice brickwork is done, and they are starting to build a cinder block wall in the front:

This will be a very welcome addition to the neighborhood. And, depending on how the eastward extension of the trail is routed, it could make for an appealing destination for bike and pedestrian traffic along the Buffalo Bayou hike and bike trail. Boat tours originating at that part of the Bayou/Ship Channel also sound very interesting.

This is a very exciting time to be living in the East End!

After not much visible change for a while, when I last went to Frank's about a week ago I noticed it was finally coming along, so there's still hope.  Still didn't seem to be anywhere near opening, though.

It's probably waiting for Aris to finish up before it can open.

More on Symbolic Brewing Co., coming to 5521 Navigation Blvd in Houston's Second Ward.

From Houston Business Journal, behind a pay-wall:

...And with his new venture, Symbolic Brewing Co., Caleb Hawkins hopes to bring a taste of the German beer culture into the heart of Houston.

"We’re not gearing (it) toward the beer nerds," Hawkins said. "They're more than welcome, but we’re much more interested in the community and having families there."

Symbolic Brewing will occupy just under an acre at 5521 Navigation Blvd., a tract of land that sits right on Buffalo Bayou and adjacent to a large barge dock that the Buffalo Bayou Partnership owns on the bayou. Hawkins and his family – his younger sister, Nellen; his older brother, Oliver and their parents – bought the land at the beginning of 2017 from an individual seller. Though the purchase price of the land wasn't disclosed, the land's value was appraised at $301,356 in January 2017, per city records.

The tract of land contains a few unique commercial properties that'll be redeveloped into a brewery and beer garden, Hawkins said. There's a 5,000-square-foot brick and concrete office building that lost its roof in a fire more than a decade ago; that building will be transformed into the brewery's beer garden and be filled with lots of greenery and topped with a shade cloth on warmer days. There's also a 2,300-square-foot industrial building that'll become the brewery's air conditioned tap room. The 9,000-square-foot property will become Symbolic Brewing's production center.

...Construction should start on Symbolic's brewery by the end of the year, Hawkins said, and the brewery should deliver by 2019.

...Hawkins said that the Buffalo Bayou Partnership is discussing the possibility of launching boat tours from the barge just adjacent to Symbolic Brewing Co.'s land.

    set to open 22 November.

New Magnolia Brewing Co. plans to open to the public Nov. 22 at 1616 Bevis St. in Shady Acres. The brewpub started as a joint venture between Shayn Robinson and his father-in-law, John Ferguson, and two months ago they enlisted another beer maker with an impressive pedigree.

Sean Spiller, a Houston-area native who previously worked for Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co. and 8th Wonder Brewery, most recently was the senior brewer at Jester King in Austin. Jester King has a reputation as one of the best breweries in Texas.

“When Sean came back to Houston and accepted the offer here, it made a pretty big splash locally,” Robinson said. “We needed somebody who had great industry experience, and we needed to kind of energize the whole process.”

New Magnolia plans to offer 10-12 beers from the start, including an ESB, hazy IPA, hefeweizen, kolsch, pale ale, pilsner, porter, stout and a Grodziskie, which is an oak-smoked wheat beer. Through Dec. 31, it will be open from 4-10 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and from noon-10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Spiller said the brewery wants to provide a communal atmosphere, similar to what he experienced in Austin. Robinson said it will be kid-friendly and pet-friendly with spacious seating inside and on both the front and back patios.

“Being able to provide something for the neighborhood here is really what we’re after,” Spiller said. “We’re interested in making small quantities and high-quality beer for our immediate area.”

Penciling the date in. Good to have another brewery in the Heights area.  I hope the trend of repurposing warehouses continues outside the loop as development and gentrification inches closer beyond the South and East loops.

This is going to be great.  BBP is really focusing on the wharf and old crane structure on Turkey Bend, just behind this brewery.   I can see these two concepts coming together nicely.

From Crain's last summer on Frank's Backyard at 413 Travis:

Frank’s Pizza knows the key to a person’s heart is a slice of good, cheap pizza. The New York-style pizza joint at 417 Travis St. in downtown Houston will soon have an outdoor patio and bar to go along with that pie once Frank’s Backyard opens next door.

General Manager Cody Hastings — also son of the owners — said he hopes Frank’s Backyard will be open and operating smoothly before 2017 hits.

“We want to be up and ready with all the kinks ironed out before the Super Bowl,” Hastings said. “That whole week will be amazing for everyone in Houston.”

The backyard will feature an outdoor patio in front of the bar, an indoor seating area and a second-floor screened-in patio for visitors with 35 to 45 taps.

“It’s going to be beer- and bourbon-driven with a little bit of everything,” Hastings said.

Although Backyard has a kitchen, Hastings said the owners didn’t want to take away from Frank’s Pizza. Hungry customers at the bar will have three kiosks where they can order pizza from next door and have it brought over.

As always, when it comes to Frank’s, expect no pretenses, he said.

“Frank’s is known for being cheap, fast and super casual and the bar will be the exact same way,” Hastings said. “The outdoor feel will be as much about the look and feel of having a beer and hanging out with your friends.”

Although exact hours haven’t been set yet, they will likely mirror the late night hours of Frank’s Pizza, which is open until 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Used Google to see if there were any renderings or details about the brewery for 5521 Navigation Blvd. I didn't find much.

I saw a deleted Facebook page for TopHill Brewing Company that matched the address

I also a LinkedIn page for someone who is a founder of Symbolic Brewing Company in Houston. The person worked in some capacity of Flying Saucer in downtown Houston.

Not sure why everyone is so critical of this area.... Quite a lot of UofH students come to this area for knick knacks and I'm sure are driving the local economy here. I can see this development being really successful, especially if they have a coffee shop here. Coral Sword is usually packed full of UofH students right now so any relief in another coffee shop would be welcome for sure.

The warehouse at 5521 Navigation Blvd is rumored for a brewery and taproom. The name is either TopHill Brewing Company or Symbolic Brewing Company.

This will be the second brewery in the Second Ward, Sigma Brewing being the other. I think there's another brewery coming to Second Ward at The Plant at Harrisburg (3401 Harrisburg).

A vacant 1950's warehouse in the Second Ward at 5521 Navigation Blvd will be repurposed. I am unaware of the property ownership.

In the intervening two weeks, it appears staff uncovered an approved parking plan for 2805 White Oak that included three spots on the these lots to meet the minimum requirements. That parking plan pre-dates the MLS application, which means that those lots should have been coded commercial in the MLS application. As a result, the planning commission approved the Holcombe Heights North replat  (lots at 742 E 6 ½ St and 746 E 6 ½ St) without a variance.
