A tower similar in appearance to Aris Market Square on the north side of the block would be quite nice.  Market Square would be a nice pocket of residential in Downtown.  Maybe Treebeard's could finally open up on weekends.

I would love to see a tower that's respectful to the historical district too  (International Tower looked awesome, but it would of been out of place on Market Square Park IMO), but since this block is outside the district, and from the garage proposal, I don't have high hopes.

I wish the garage was brick with vines growing up trellises for screening over the open sections.

This is terrible. It's bad enough that downtown is littered with open-air garages but allowing for one to go up on Market Square Park shows just how far we have to go as a city.

Yeah, I know that there are plans to develop around it.

Yep. Hopefully they're just leaving a blank slate so that when the tower is built, they can cover it in a matching facade.

Can only tell from one side where the parking garage is, and it's not ugly. Is it gonna be underground? Or did ZC just did that good a job of hiding it?

ZC does nice work, but I wish they would have hired an architect from one of their other projects. Those

    are very nice buildings.

Like the catalyst tower, the garage is wrapped in apartments.

  4. If you didn't know what was there before, you probably don't think much of this new addition. It certainly blends well with the bookend buildings on either side. It's a shame the school didn't keep up with the old building enough to prevent it from falling into disrepair, but that time has come and gone..

Especially being that Capitol Tower is likely to come out of the ground....which will not only add space to an already saturated market but you've got Shell One Towr that's nearly empty, 700 Louisiana that will be half empty, Continental Center One will have a boat load of space when United leaves for 609 Main. 6 Houston Centeris a pipe dream and nothing more

I wonder if it's time to take a cue from our neighbors to the north and consider converting one of these older office buildings into a different use..

I think it looses a bit of the allure if your "penthouse" is one of 14 in a building....  I am pretty sure by definition there should only be one penthouse, but i guess that would make me a pretty terrible developer!

Haha, this reminded me of that proposed skyscraper in Dubai from like 10 years ago, called the Pentomimium. Well over 100 stories, and since the plan was for every floor to be one residential unit, they tried advertising it as every floor being a "penthouse".

if 14 penthouses isn't enough to kill the allure, surely 100+ penthouses would..

Friday and Saturday all the restaurants were packed when i was there early evening...even that kooky Bud's BBQ Popup inside their future space in Avenida Houston

Buds BBQ "pop up"? So they haven't finished the actual restaurant? I tried to go there for lunch last Monday but apparently none of the places had opened yet since it was before the LIVE event had started for the day.

I kind of feel that the party was more spread out this time compared to last. in 2004 everyone was on Main street for the club experience. This time, everyone was everywhere. Plus I have to remember in 2004 there weren't concerts as part of the NFL experience.

Im sure it was. There is way more going on in downtown now than back in 2004 when it was really just some stuff on Main Street.

I saw some lights running the crease from the bottom to the top on the other day... So i know the full lighting scheme has not been implemented just yet.

FYI the lights we saw on a couple days ago are just the cycle through / testing...

Let wait till the building is 'complete' to judge the lighting.

Yeah, I took some pictures of the recessed "creased" lighting last week, but even that isn't very bright. I hoped/figured they would back the rest of the crown/fins with LEDs, so maybe it will look better once that's done. I just hope they can turn up the brightness.. so far they look more like a dim glow than bright colorful accent lighting.

  10. Dude, give it a rest. We get it.. You're upset that you left early and couldn't get back in to see ZZ Top. If you'd ever been to any previous secured events at Discovery Green, you would have known that the park can reach capacity and they start turning people away once it's full.. maybe next time you won't make the poor decision of leaving the park early, and then try to go back in later in the evening on the biggest day of the biggest festival the park has ever hosted.

Or you won't, and will continue to accuse the park/city/fire department of being prude because they wouldn't accommodate your schedule.

Ok, I'll admit it, the lighting on 609 is bad. For a new landmark building, it deserves better.

The lighting doesn't seem nearly as bright as I had hoped, but other then that it's not terrible. It could of been cool if they had LEDs along the angles/edges though.

Yeah they shut down the entrances to the Kendrick Lamar concert for the final four so my buddy and I hopped the fence. Way less security than the Superbowl so when it was at capacity last night I just went to rice village.

Yep, I was going to mention this too. I left early that day to walk around downtown and take pictures, and the park was already at capacity/theywere already turning people away by 4:00 when I was leaving. That's what happens when you have large events..

went with some buddies last night to the area and walked around a bit however most of Discovery Green itself is now taken over by the various news and nfl experience venues and is closed off...however you can walk along Avenida Houston and see the restaurants and the GRB lobby etc. We went to the Marriott to show them around and show them the pool deck. Some guys were filming a rap video up there so we got to watch that a bit haha! Then went to the 29th floor since you can look out the window of the elevator lobby area there and see the texas shaped lazy river from there...then we headed to Biggios for appetizers and drinks and really love the many huge screens they have and watched some killer snowboard action on the biggest single screen in Houston maybe. I loved the french fries by the way haha! Fun night and wow our city looks great! Hope to see everyone Saturday night at Super Bowl Live!!!

The Disco wasn't closed off. I thought it was too until I saw someone casually walk through one of the Live entrances/metal detectors, so I followed and no one said a thing. I was able to walk all through the park last night (except of course for the big Fox Sports area on the central lawn). Not the greatest pictures I've ever taken, but I'll post them up in the convention center thread later.
