Really excited for this project and bringing more people downtown.  In addition to having some revenue on the block, this is probably a move by the Developer to have some of the site work done to entice larger companies - similar to Capitol Tower.  There are 1-3 tenants in, or about to be in, the market that could lead tenant a brand new building. Good things ahead for this side of downtown.

1-3 tenants in/about to be in the market... looking to relocate from other downtown buildings?

    maybe they've abandoned their plans

Dont you say that! Haha.. admittedly that mixed use development seemed really ambitious, but it seems like the developers behind the project were serious about it, given their submission of the plat, trying to work with the neighborhood association to address any issues, requesting abandonment with the city, and what not.

Actually Cloud713, if you enlarge the image enough you'll see the crane for the 38 story hotel and condo project on Main.

Now be patient with me and let me guide you to it. If you look at the Texas Childrens building with the crane on the left  side of picture and look on the right side of Tex. Ch. and maybe four floors down from top of right side you'll just see what looks like the weighted end of the crane  for the new Main residential 38 story tower in the gap and just above the trees. So you can actually see signs if just barely of 4 projects with cranes in the med center. I guess the old eyes are still working.

Haha.. I saw the back of one of the cranes at the hotel/residential tower barely peeking out behind the new Children's tower when I uploaded the picture to my computer, but I didn't figure that was obvious enough for most people to notice, so I didn't mention it. Good eye!

^^^ AVENIDA HOUSTON along with it's many areas of art, is considered a very integral part of the DOWNTOWN CONVENTION DISTRICT.  HAMPTON INN/HOMEWOOD SUITES resides within the DOWNTOWN CONVENTION DISTRICT.  many of GONZO'S exemplary art exhibits often reside within the AVENIDA HOUSTON/DOWNTOWN CONVENTION DISTRICT.  therefore, not "off-topic" and very easily comprehensible as per our many HAIF patrons.....

Well, technically this thread is only for the Avenida Houston promenade, the convention center itself, and the GHP Building next door. Hampton Inn/Homewood Suites has its own thread on this forum, hence why it would be considered "off topic".. but im not trying to nit pick, was just trying to help you out. The discussion does often get side tracked into the other developments in the area though, since as you say, they are part of the overall Convention District.

Wonder if they could do anything to mess with folks' depth perception--similar to the tunnel going into the MFAH below the street from the parking garage across the street.  That thing always throws me off-balance.

The James Turrell tunnel? That's between the Beck building and the Weiss Law building.

Outside of skywalks in downtown, when's the last time a private company built a pedestrian bridge over major thoroughfare, or highway?

I'm struggling to think of any others than the Astroworld bridge over 610.

There's got to be a few over some smaller roads connecting parking structures to apartments, but over a major thoroughfare?

I may be making this up.. but isn't there an old hotel on the beltway by IAH with some sort of connector pedestrian bridge over the highway? I don't get on that side of town often but I remember reading a discussion about the hotel on here a few years ago.

I would like to see UH develop a near campus-student community that is unique to UH.  UH has never been and will never be "like UT" (and I think that's a plus).  With the new construction and focus on creating a full-time student community on and around the campus, UH has a great opportunity to create something one of a kind. I have degrees from both schools and think UH and UT are both equally but differently "fine".

"Near campus", as in like a cluster of student housing/amenities around a rail stop/intersection in East Downtown?

Ugh I hate the LEDs on 609 Main, they could have included the whole crown and made the lights white not dark blue (sorry I know wrong thread)

I don't mean to further sidetrack this thread.. but those LEDs are color changeable, to keep with the downtown lighting theme. Note the other blue building lighting.. I'm right there with you on including the whole crown though. I'm not sure why they didn't carry the led lighting down the full sides of the fins, where the mechanical floors are. Ah well.. Aria is looking great. The more it comes along, the more I appreciate how it's style is respectful to the surrounding Market Sqaure neighborhood.

    Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has informed the University of Houston that it will close a significant portion of Spur 5 northbound from the University of Houston campus to downtown destinations beginning at 9 p.m., Friday, March 3. It will be closed for the next seven to nine months.

All traffic that travels Spur 5 northbound (the fully elevated portion from UH to downtown exits) will be immediately detoured to the Scott St. exit ramp. Drivers will loop around and turn right to access the I-45 northbound frontage road to reach downtown. Only the elevated portion of Spur 5 northbound to downtown destinations is affected in the first phase of the I-45 Northbound Direct Connector Project. Drivers will still be able to access the I-45 northbound lanes from Spur 5.

Drivers traveling from UH to downtown are encouraged to find alternative routes and avoid Spur 5 northbound to downtown destinations. Additionally, all commuters should avoid the area of Scott St. at I-45 or expect delays.

The work is part of the first phase of a construction project that will build a direct connector from I-45 north to I-69/US 59/SH 288 southbound and a second connector to I-69/US 59 northbound alleviating the bottleneck at the current I-45/US 59 split just south of downtown. Road construction is expected in this area until 2019.

For more information visit www.houstontranstar.org for a complete list of closures related to this construction project.

The University of Houston will post updates on construction as they become available at http://www.uh.edu/af-auxiliary-services/parking/parking-on-campus/traffic-alert/45-construction.php.

I read that Buc-ee's was funding much of the opposition to the line. Can anyone verify or debunk this?

I find this hard to believe... Beaver lives in the same neighborhood that my parents live in. He's not that rich.

  11. Interesting.. I didn't notice the sail silhouette. I wonder if they're still pushing for that office tower then? If so, that half of the block will likely be vacant for a few years at least.. I hoped they would try to land a high end hotel with condos on top.

True on the developer wanting to keep their aesthetic options open. I mentioned the "blank slate" theory earlier in the week. Hopefully that's the case, but I agree that it would be nice to do something temporary to spruce it up in the meantime.
