  1. My father in law is a geologist for Devon. He told me about the layoffs, which is a big deal for a company that prides itself in never having to lay off anybody.
  2. Devon just recently went through a round of layoffs. I would be surprised to see them sign on something like this. Not any inside info, just a guess.
  3. Generally speaking the churches located downtown have a much better approach in dealing with, and helping the homeless. Christ Church Cathedral feeds the homeless three days a week, but also offers laundry services and showers (which is more important than most would think). They also offer medical and psychological services. They also don't tolerate loitering around while their services are not offered. If you head their while they are serving people, then yes naturally there are homeless everywhere. If you walk by during the time they are closed, then you wouldn't even know they provide those services. I guess actually being part of community can dictate how you operate vs. the out of town churches that simply feed a bunch of homeless and hop on the Tollroad back to suburbia.
  4. There is a lot of involvement (public officials, etc.) on this project now for it to be dead. That doesn't mean things can't change of course. ChannelTwoNews - my only point was that most "groundbreakings" are mostly ceremonial. In this case, I'm optimistic this project gets going soon.
  5. They didn't say construction had started, but that they had a "ground breaking". All that means is some semi-important people got to dig around in a makeshift sandbox.
  6. I met the guy who owns the Magnolia hotel at a wedding in Denver. He said they changed the name to the Magnolia when they moved into the old Mobil building in downtown Dallas. Just an interesting side bar with nothing to do with the thread topic.
  7. Wrong topic, I know, but what kind of asbestos issues are there with the old Days Inn? Does anybody know?
  8. capn - I noticed this as well. To me "ubiquitous" is almost contrary to the description of an exclusive property. I guess it just sounds like a fancy word, and the developer assumes most will gloss right over it.
  9. I noticed a variance sign at the "curve" on Shepherd just over the overpass at W. Dallas and Shepherd (near Tila's restaurant). There is an existing office building where the sign was. Does anybody know what the plans are for this site? It looks awfully cramped.
  10. I lived in NYC. Trust me, it gets so hot and muggy there you wouldn't believe it. At least we have the relief of good A/C once you reach your destination in Houston.
  11. I wonder if we would all get along better face-to-face than we do sometimes anonymously.
  12. We all have enough retail to fill our NEED, but a fair amount of us WANT more retail options DT.
  13. Maybe you're talking about the parking garage going up by Heritage Plaza?
  14. North. It's a shorter trip from Huntsville anyway.
  15. Any news on this project? Nothing seems to be moving at the site. Someone posted on this thread a while back that Jan-Feb 07 would be a start date. Maybe they meant 08.
  16. I've stayed in the one in Beverly Hills. I didn't see much that differentiated it from other upper end hotels. The beds were glorious though.
  17. Good news. I've been waiting for something to happen on that corner for a long time. On a side note, the editor of that publication should be embarrased. Facts were wrong, and some poor writing in spots.
  18. There is no way Brookfield adds more office space without adding parking. I work in Two Allen and the Allen Center garage is already packed.
  19. It's a standard risk/reward investment decision. It's a potential high reward area at a high risk.
  20. This may not be the appropriate forum for an economics lesson, but can somebody explain why the marginal costs of each additional floor increases exponentially? In my business (midstream energy) we build plants. The cost to mobilize on site almost always justifies building bigger. Sorry if this is too far off topic.
  21. I drove by the old hotel today during my lunch hour because I'm curious to know what's going on. There have been workers on site for the past several months. I walked around inside to see if I could spot a sales officer, but nobody was there. It looked like they were in the process of picking out molding for the interior. There were several pieces lined up around the walls. This one kind of intrigues me.
  22. Appeared to be more activity on the site yesterday. It looked like the big offroad vehicles were drilling holes on the back side of the property for soil samples.
  23. I did notice a billboard on the site of the Hight Street Project yesterday, as well as some very large offroad looking vehicles. This was the first time for me to notice a board displaying the project. Sorry if this is old news.
  24. Didn't some investor do some deal with Metro in this area with a parcel of land? Some kind of sale and lease back with an option for Metro to buy if nothing is developed during the term? I seem to remember some sort of crazy deal like that in the area. I think the area was dealt a serious blow when a drug and alcohol rehab center went into the old Days Inn.
