I'm not sure where to put this note, but Six Flags has decided to shut down Astroworld and sell the property. Apparently the land is worth more than the amusement park.

The cover of this month's edition of the Crutchfield catalog features a TV with a picture of a nice blue glass skyscraper. I bet the people who put the catalog together didn't realize that it's the old Enron building. You can see Continental reflected in the glass.

What does race have to do with it? When I lived in Midtown I saw plenty of blacks in BMWs. What's your point?

I'm a big fan of technology and technology web sites. The problem is that so many have strayed from their purpose of discussing new technology, innovations, computers, and gadgets. These days too many of the large tech sites are all about social issues, bashing America, global warming, politics, and other non-tech related subjects (I'm lookng at you, Slashdot!) I felt like there wasn't any place left on the internet for people to talk about neat projects and gizmos and things on the horizon. Everything is just a blog linking to another blog linking to another blog (Gizmodo!), page after page of ads (Tom's Hardware!) or covering things that I just don't care about (Ars!). Then I thought, "I wish I had my own forum where I could discuss things I like." And then I thought, "I do!" And here it is.

Feel free to post some pictures of what's happening at the Astrodome, too. Thanks for working so hard down there and doing what the rest of us can't. -

I'd love to see some new pictures of the completed building. -
There are tens of thousands of people from Louisiana, and maybe even other Gulf states in Houston for the next couple of months, and they're going to need a crash course in living in the Bayou City. Use this section to post information and links that will help them out. Whenever possible, post the actual text instead of the link as links become outdated or overwhelmed. This is the least we can do for so many people who need our help.

Post Oak Shopping Center At 1703-1751 Post Oak Blvd.

Potbelly Sanwdich Works isn't all that great. It's like Subway but with better bread, and less fillings. Johnny Rockets is a chain of 50's retro hamburger and hot dog joints. Good food, but expensive. And you have to pay extra for fries! -

What's the address of this school? It's not the one behind West Gray that has all the compost stacked up against it?- 17 replies

What's there now is better than what was, but it's still not "great." It reminds me of some hotel rooms I've stayed in -- trying so hard to be interesting, that it's steile. It needs something like more plants or another large water feature, or something to make it feel more human and make the humans feel less like they're at the bottom of a massive tile shower stall.

This is the roof of a parking garage, too. It's also the roof of a train station. It should be easier to build a great park over a garage because you're in total control of the environment.

Here's a picture from the Keating | Khang web site of "The Pavilion at Post Oak." I assume it's the same project. Keating's probably a good choice for it, since he's done a lot of work in Houston and seems to understand the city.

Yep. That's a design I can support. And if they can rename Saint Luke's for a lawyer, maybe they can make this one the "Mattress Mac Center" "Get Flat On Your Back At Mattress Mac Medical Center"- 63 replies

MD Anderson T. Boone Pickens Academic Tower At 1400 Pressler St.
editor replied to Lectro's topic in Texas Medical Center
It fits in, but it's still bland 90's architecture. The Medical Center is quickly becoming Sugar Land. Will no one take a chance to make this a landmark and not just another clump of stucco-covered boxes?- 63 replies

Great idea. I think auto dealerships are the second worst use for inner city land. Parking lots are the worst.

Tell that to Las Vegas or Orlando.

In Montreal there are vagrants, but they don't talk to you. They stand and hold out their hands or their hats, but it appears that they are prohibited by some sort of law from actually speaking to people. I recently picked up a new book at Barnes & Noble called "Rats." It's about a guy in New York who spends a year observing the rats in a particular alley. It was actully quite fascinating. If you're looking for a neat book, pick it up. It's only ten bucks at Amazon. Cool book on Rats and urban life.

It's certainly an up-and-coming neighborhood. I wouldn't be surprised to see your investment multiply. But there are, of course, growing pains. Read other posts on this forum about the troubles Midtown has been going through lately. You take the good with the bad. Also, I don't know how the building, itself, is but it's pretty old by Houston standards. You might want to have a professional inspect the apartment you're interested in.
