  2. Here's Metro's response to the federal investigation of its purchase of rail cars from Spain: --------- METRO SUBMITS BUY AMERICA RESPONSE LETTER TO THE FEDERAL TRANSIT ADMINISTRATION METRO submitted its response today to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regarding the agency’s Buy America program for the purchase of light-rail cars. The FTA is conducting a review of METRO’s adherence to Buy America provisions for the purchase of cars from Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) of Spain – two test cars, funded locally, and 103 cars funded with federal money. “We want to make very clear to the FTA that METRO and its Board of Directors firmly believe in the Buy America program,” said METRO’s Chairman Gilbert A. Garcia, CFA. “This program is critical to the economic vitality of this community; never more so than during this current economic recession.” In its letter to the FTA, METRO reemphasized that the two cars to be built in Spain will be paid for with local funds. This decision was based on solid business decisions: To provide quality assurance and adherence to safety standards for the production of the 103 rail cars to be assembled in New York under a separate, federally funded contract. METRO assured the FTA that it performs periodic audits of its major contractors on the rail project to ensure all federal requirements are being met. Garcia said METRO wants to work closely with the FTA to address any remaining issues on the light-rail construction. “We appreciate the FTA’s vigilance in ensuring compliance,” Garcia said. “We are anxious to get this project moving quickly. Jobs for America are needed now more than ever.”
  3. I don't think Daley fought all that hard for it. The Olympics were supposed to be the crowning achievement of his administration, and when he lost those he stopped caring about a lot of things. All of his old pals have turned on him, organized labor has turned on him, the minority groups have turned on him (you pretty much don't get elected in Chicago without support from the Hispanic Democratic Organization), the county board has turned on him. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't run again. I do expect, however, for O'Hare airport to be renamed in his honor after he leaves office. The comments from the suburban mayor are just outdated sour grapes. As for why United in Chicago instead of Houston? I have no idea. As far as I can tell, it's not based on logic. All the numbers point to Houston. I saw an article in the Times that said that it will costs an extra $20,000 per employee to have United in Chicago. That totally makes sense. Hawaii is awash in Japanese tourists. I know of at least one minor global retail chain that opened a store in Hawaii specifically for the convenience of its Japanese clientele, and encourages its Hawaiian staff to learn Japanese. For the Japanese, going to Hawaii has all the benefits of a vacation in America without the time or expense of a 15-hour flight to New York.
  4. METRO PRESIDENT & CEO FRANK J. WILSON RESIGNS/ GEORGE GREANIAS NAMED AS INTERIM PRESIDENT & CEO METRO President & CEO Frank J. Wilson has resigned. Garcia said Greanias will begin work on Monday.

  6. I don't really see why (certain) people are freaking out about the camera. I guess because there's so little else to complain about. I can see Apple adding a small low-resolution camera to the front of the iPad for video chats. But to put a real camera on the back of it, like with the iPhone, would be silly. It's far too large to use as a camera without looking and feeling stupid. Try picking up your laptop and pretending to take a photo with it. It's just silly. Just because you can put a camera (or any other feature) into something doesn't mean you should. GE could put a camera in my toaster, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. Griefers and low-grade techno nerds don't understand why feature creep is a bad thing. But Apple does, which is why its devices sell so well. It comes with a small metal toothpick for use in ejecting the micro SIM tray. Any other requests?
  7. I can see the camera happening, but I wouldn't hold your breath for the SD slot. If it's that big a deal to you, pick up the Camera Connection Kit for $29. It gives you an SD card slot, plus the ability to hook up USB keyboards and audio devices (VOIP/Skype headsets, etc...).

  9. I (well, my wife... close enough) got the new 3G version of the iPad yesterday. A couple of quick thoughts: The 3G is fast. Really fast. Like almost as good as wifi fast. I know it's partly because of the A4 chip's faster rendering of pages, but I think it's also because it has the new 3G chip in it that can take advantage of AT&T's 7.2 HSDPA towers. I'm in one of the upgraded AT&T markets. It's great that the iPad can run the iPhone apps, but disappointing when you have to. I'll use apps on the iPad that I wouldn't on the iPhone simply because they're so much more useable and compelling on the iPad. Specifically: Zinio, USA Today, ABC, and The Weather Channel. This will very likely replace my wife's MacBook and iPhone as her primary computing and communications platform. It is disappointing that certain vendors haven't come out with iPad versions of their apps. I'm thinking of Facebook specifically. But the web version of Facebook works perfectly on the iPad. Netflix streaming is great on this thing. Even works on 3G (the ABC app doesn't stream on 3G because of licensing issues). Syncing on the iPad is way faster than syncing an iPhone. Again, it's probably the A4 chip. The iPad is a/b/g/n compatible, which is nice because we have a dedicated N-only wifi network in the house for things that require a lot of data. Now the only things on the b/g are the PSPs, my iPhone, and the printer. My wife got the 64GB version and loaded 9,000 songs, 200 music videos (including about a dozen that are actually hour-long concerts), 3,800 photos, a TV show from iTunes, and about 60 apps into the thing and there's about 15GB of space left. I think that in time, the iPad will save me money because my wife can swap her iPhone for a pay-as-you-go Razr (she's not a talker, she's an e-mailer), and we can use her old computer as a DVR/AppleTV, and cut down on our cable bill. If you have any questions about the iPad, I can answer them first hand. Here's some screenshots of HAIF on the iPad. It's perfectly readable in both portrait and landscape mode (they may have been scaled a little bit going through e-mail). Vastly superior to the iPhone experience.
  10. Great example. I've heard from architects that there's good money in redesigning buildings that were buttoned up in the 70's energy crisis and became "sick" buildings.

  12. I don't know if this counts, but most of the places I worked when I was in radio had no windows. A very few did, though, and those were much better operations with happier employees. I even felt better about going to work, comparatively, as well. Sure, co-workers and money and other factors played a role, but having worked in offices with no windows and worked in offices with lots of windows, I prefer to see outside. Since the use of natural light in offices is one of the "green" initiatives, I can see how that might work. While I enjoy the smell of a new car, some people are sensitive to VOC's. A lot of new offices are kitted out with low-VOC carpets, paint, and cubicles. I think it's about figuring out which "green" things are also good for the workers. I can see insurance companies eventually (if they haven't already) getting on board with this sort of thing. Happy workers mean fewer sick days and medical expenses for the insurance company to cover.

  21. I was lucky enough to live next to Freedmen's Town (Freedmenstown?) before it was bulldozed and became Townhouse Central. No, it wasn't a great place. It was ugly and dirty and run down and frankly a little scary, even to someone my size. But I'm a big believer in preserving history, and a lot of early Houston history was lost in that place. I recently found out about a project to preserve and spread a little bit of Freedmen's Town's legacy: Freedman Plantlets They're cuttings taken from one of the last remaining plants in Freedmen's Town before it was scraped clean. People are signing up for pieces which they plant in their yards and help cultivate a little history. I don't know how much they cost, but I know sevfiv has one. Maybe she'll fill in the details.
