Add all of Atlanta's area counties togeather and they are about to surpass Houston's there counties are much smaller than Harris and Ft Bend.

Anyways, by the next census Harris County will go down to the 4th largest county and Maricopa County, AZ will go up to #3.

Yeah well, my Dad can beat up your Dad!

Look, if he wants to post about Atlanta, that's within the scope of this forum and he's free to do so. If people don't like it, or aren't interested in reading it, than just ignore it. It's not necessary to attack other members because you don't happen to like their topics.

This thread was designed to bash Houston from the start Subdude, so it's a little difficult for some of us to take. I think with all of the constant "Houston is the suck" stuff going on, it's understandable that some of our feathers are getting ruffled

Look, citykid has been posting here a long time and he's no Houston-basher. All this topic was doing was reviewing Atlanta. In any event, we still don't want to have flame wars.

First off the Airpot, I explained how much better there's is than Houston on here:
(Translated, Citykid is saying: Stepping off the plane at the airport, I realized how much better their's (Atlanta's) is compared to Houston's airport.) Below is the rest of the original post with Houston referenced.
Downtown Atlanta is really great.. There is so much history in that city and they show that unlike Houston.

Land wise Atlanta is much nicer. The hills are really nice, and not having feeder roads make the freeways look 100% better.

Peachtree/Westhimer: Peachtree in my opinion is a much nicer street, There are trees lining the street, and even once you leave downtown and midtown on into the space between midtown and buckhead its simi urban. There is an urban Krogers center that is all the way up to the street and coffe shops, highend stuff all around, with people walking down the street.

I expected Buckead to not be as great as uptown Houston but I was wrong, It's really nice and has a more urban look that uptown Houston, there are shops lining the streets with paralle parking.

..unlike in Houston you would see wealth people also on the MARTA riding with there kids in strollers and rich well dressed friends. ..I know some of you will get mad but METRO LightRail is a joke to me now.

The Subways are really nice, as is the above ground stations. I like How they keep the above ground stations away from the street though, unlike Houstons. And there are walls with billboard advertisings on them like other big cities, something I wish Houston had.

From seeing Atlanta, all I have to say is Houston has a lot of work to do to catch up, and bringing the Houston Pavillions downtown won't be the cure for it all, thats only the begining.

After seeing Atlanta, I really, really, really want to move there now. I had went on this trip thinking I would finally get to see that Houston was the better city...........I was wrong.

I think its subjective as to whether he was bashing or not. I don't think anyone here would be excited to read a review of another city where a non-houstonian continually uses Houston to make the city being reviewed look better.

Good thing citykid is no Houston-basher. Otherwise, it would have REALLY sounded bad.

Since I now know that citykid is no Houston-basher, I want to personally thank citykid for informing me what a piece of ____ my hometown is. If he had not warned me, comparing Houston's ____tiness to Atlanta's gloriousness in such minute detail, I might have stayed in Houston, oblivious to it's ____tiness.

Just an observation: I think most people on this forum that are "critical" of this city are members of other international forums that are seeing what other cities our size and cities that are a lot smaller than ours are doing to improve their quality of life. Everyone on these other forums have opinions that sometime make perfect sense. Sometimes there comments are more of a critique and some people are just plain ugly. It is just the simple fact that these comments do not mean anything on this board when the average Houstonian likes to live in a bubble and could care less what other cities think.

The funny thing is CityKid lives in B/CS. And everybody know what they say about B/CS.

Hey now... this is a defend houston by bashing atlanta thread....

CityKid is not indicative of the quality of people to be found in BCS... so leave BCS out of it.

That's kind of amusing, since what I was thinking is that most of the comments on this (and other boards) are off the top of the head remarks that are not grounded in research or reality. As opposed to researching their comments before typing, many posts on this board are OPINIONS stated as facts...for instance, claiming parallel parking is more "urban" than slant-in parking. Excuse me? What urban how-to manual did that come out of?

The other forums are generally no better. The only difference is that their provincialism is more pronounced, and their flame wars more intense. Those that think that reading SSP makes them more wordly and informed, really need to get out from in front of their monitors for awhile.

Now, as for Atlanta? citykid, I was in Atlanta before you were born. Saw the Allman Brothers and Led Zeppelin there in the 70s. Nice town. If I liked it more, I'd move there. Oh, and Bryan-College Station? I lived there before you were born, too. Frankly, it SUCKS. Four years at A&M convinced me never to live anywhere in Texas that isn't a big city. But, these are my opinions. What you think of Atlanta and Houston is your opinion, too. You might get less grief if you labelled them as such.

Stupid Houstonians! When are they and everybody else moving here going to realize how slummy, backwards, and God forsaken we are?

Our problem is that we don't even realize we're living in squaller.

I agree completely. You can read my last pagraphaph in post #26 to see how I can relate to you.

It is not just SSP. Going back to those remarks that are not grounded in research or reality, if I am not mistaken, for the most part I thought this forum was based on urban issues and architecture. It is just that when people surface those problems, here come the individuals that will quickly call it bashing. Even when people talk about Houston growth patterns and how they can be improved in a more realistic manner rather than doing something just because it looks more urban, people are still criticized. No offense to citykid09, but I never said that I defend everything he says to begin with and if you read my post in this thread you would know that. It is just that I feel he believes that urban growth is a black and white issue and there is no grey area. Those type of comments are the comments on the other board that I describe as just plain ugly.

Some of you guys are proof of the truth hurts.

Now Come on guys, no where in Houston can you find that out side of Downtwon, the medical center of that little section in the Heights.

Atlanta has:

Cabbagetown

Little 5 Points

College Park

Virgina Highlands

Vinnings

and more.

Now I am not ragging on Houston, I just don't want yall to think Houston is the best city there is in the south and south west and that there is no room for improvments. You all ways have to keep working on your city, you can't just stop and say thats it, or else someother city will rise up and take your title. Do you guys think I like that Atlanta has all of this and Houston doesn't???? No, I wish it was Houston that had L5P and all of those other cool areas.

I know Houston has the Village Arcade area, but that area still just looks like an early version of a shopping center. It still has front in Parking and parking lots all around, just not as much as others around Houston.

Yes you are.

Yes Houston is.

Houston is hardly resting on its laurels.. Houston is improving... but based on those pictures you just posted and are so proud of... Atlanta has alot more work cut out for her than Houston does.

WHOAAAA!

It's good that Houston has a handful of self-appointed keepers of the communal good, otherwise we'd really be up Keegan's kilt. And, although I'm sure you won't view it quite the same, I'm glad that Tokyo has done such a fine job of packing its ten million residents into such a small area but it has done nothing to eliminate its congestion, its traffic, its smog or its propensity to fall into a giant pile of rubble during the next major earthquake. But, hey, some people really hate cars and should be allowed every opportunity to live five blocks from EVERYTHING they could ever hope to enjoy, including a tree.

If it sounds like I'm being smarmy, I am. There is no value in trying to turn Houston or any other city into some other city under the mistaken notion that you're improving someone's quality of life. Just because New Yorkers are really uppity about taking the subway to get a bowl of soup during lunch doesn't mean that people in Houston, Atlanta, Gainesville, FL or Timbuktu should be shamed into doing everything in their power to mimick this behavior.

Personally, I like lawns. I like having neighbors who have lawns. I like to occasionally drive a car around and get a full appreciation for the various neighborhoods that make up my home town. I don't think I'd dig a landscape that's dominated by brick, pavement and sidewalk, with nary a tree to be found unless at some municipal park. True harcore urbanists disagree, and that's fine, but they mistake their views for 100% ironclad truth of what makes a high-quality location. They don't. They merely express their own personal preferences.

As for City Kid, he's entitled to his opinion, but the fact that he keeps posting these opinions are a little odd. What's his objective? I mean, it became pretty clear a while ago that he'd developed some pretty deep fixation with Atlanta and that it was his new town of choice. That's no big deal. But when you try to constantly glorify Atlanta at the expensive of another city at that other city's forum, you have to wonder what's going on.

I know what Atlanta's like, a lot better than City Kid, so I'm not concerned with his point-by-point explanation of why Atlanta's so great and why Houston has to "catch up". It's not important. I don't live and die with someone's opinion, especially when hypberbole and flat out misrepresentations are included.

Phooey. Save that for the folks on the farm who don't know better.

But he's entitled to his opinion, and I'm glad he has something that he can feel so passionate about.

I hope he goes deeper in his analysis and starts pointing out other pluses for Atlanta, such as its superior stop signs, 10-minute oil change shops, empty warehouses and Waffle House franchises. I think that would be great reading.

I'm dead serious.

I just fail to see what is so special about your L5P based on those pics.

I'm not talking trash.. I was just questioning your previous comment.

Did I miss something, or why have you determined that Atalanta's eclectic/dirty/artsy area is better than Houston's eclectic/dirty/artsy area just because it is "nowhere near downtown" .

What does that have to do with anything ?

Geeez, that was funnier than Coogs last post.

Citykid, you and I need to talk about writing sitcom. I've got the title... "Citykid hits the Atlanta urban scene". It will be great! We'll start on your move into the area's pictured, watch you and your new crazy friends and there shenanigans, and then wrap it up with you running for your life back to Houston.

citykid09, I respect your opinions but you really are not making sense dude. You and I know that Houston has areas like you just pictured. I am sorry but I am not about to be your puppet and post pics all over again. I think Great Hizzy has clearly found your objective.

Little Five points is indeed near downtown. About 2 miles east. You may just have to stop being lazy and actually explore Houston for yourself except for getting high off of people posting pictures for you. The fact that you keep mentioning only the Montrose and the Village says a lot. The fact that your only definition of urban is parallel parking along storefronts says a lot. The fact that if a building does not have retail at the bottom level is not urban says a lot. The fact that single family homes even if they have back alleys and small lots are not urban says a lot. I have been living in Houston my whole life and I have still not seen the whole city. Just something to think about.

I've never been to Atlanta, much less all these suburbs & neighborhoods you keep glorifying. All I can tell you is that you're going to have to do more than show pictures of what could easily be mistaken as downtown Richmond or Alvin, to convince me that Atlanta's neighborhoods are better than Houston's.

And yes, you are ragging on Houston. You do every chance you get. Houston sucks this, Houston doesn't have that. You're always the first to criticize this town and you don't even live here.

Houston has so much to offer you and yet you're continually blinded by something so unrelated.
