He should've taken the misdemeanor deal that he was offered earlier. He had bad bookkeeping and it was a racially motivated case. Or he plead guilty because, as the article you cite suggests, he realized how much evidence there was against him and he knew the jig was up... Neither side would comment on why Trevino changed his mind after standing before a jury and declaring, "I am not guilty" on Friday, but he may not have realized the extent of the case against him. During opening statements last week, Moore told jurors they would see proof that checks and donations made to the charity seemed to go directly to slot machines in a Louisiana casino, "sometimes the next day."Trevino's attorneys had tried unsuccessfully to keep out testimony from Trevino's bookkeeper, who was granted immunity from prosecution. She has admitted she forged a signature on more than 100 checks. She likely was going to tell jurors that she was directed by Trevino to sign the checks.I didn't see any mention of the racial makeup of the jury. The only thing he may be guilty of is bad bookkeeping but he's not a criminal. This is just a way for certain people in power to keep the uppity Mexican Democrat in his place. The Trevino apologists out there are relentless. Fact: you can be a great guy AND commit a crime. The two acts are not mutually exclusive. I read a bunch of articles during that era for the ill-fated monorail/people mover plan Whitmire wanted (and no, the people didn't vote on that plan specifically), and while Turner and Lanier beat Whitmire handily, Turner still lost. He kept winning elections so the only way left was to put some trumped up charges against him and stick him with a mostly white jury. He was forced out. They had cashed checks from the charity that aligned with his gambling trips. He was toast, and I'm surprised he didn't take the misdemeanor plea earlier. A good conspiracy theory requires some theories, like the "magic bullet" or the similarities of WTC 7's collapse with a controlled demolition. Not saying these are true, but they at least add intrigue. What it sounds like you have is "people didn't like him".
