Calm down...I was just pointing out that there a lot of lifers in politics.  Probably the vast majority, if you look at it closely, on both sides.  Plus some wannabe's.

It'll be a very intriguing 2023 Mayoral campaign including campaigns for Houston City Controller & City Council.

We dropped a level back to Beta+. We were Alpha- for a couple of years 😔 Philadelphia and Seattle surprised me as Beta cities. Boston jumped from Beta+ to Alpha-.

What could be the causes of this? Are Austin and Dallas having a greater impact on the entire state and more? Will the new transit lines help us jump even higher?

I'm going with option E: I have no idea.

I've been trying to watch more local TV news lately, but it's just the same old thing on every channel.  And not even the "same old thing" as in they all cover the same stories.  I mean the same old thing I used to put on the local news when I was doing it almost 25 years ago.

Another random shooting.  Another random fire.  Another random outrage group trying to make a name for itself and mug for the camera.  Same old stuff from day to day.

It seems like the consultants have convinced local news directors to shift from "News that matters" to "New you can use" to "Here's what you should be afraid of today!"

The only difference between now and 25 years ago is that now, there's traffic in the evening newscasts.  Who is that for?  With the exception of the morning news, people don't turn on the TV to see what the traffic is like.  Even if they did, by the time they got in their car and on the freeway, the traffic has changed.  Traffic is just filler content because it's cheaper than hiring more writers and reporters.

Also, where are the news helicopters?  As far as I can tell, only 13 has one.  It used to be that every station except 26 and 39 had one.  And 39's excuse was that it was a startup and the owners made the news director choose between a satellite truck and a helicopter.

The only station doing anything different is KHOU, but even that is superficial.  It's at least visually different, even though it's a standard package that's used at all of its owners' stations.  Every other station is putting out news using the same methods, the same visuals, the same rundowns as when I was doing it.

The best local news in Houston these days is the dead tree edition of the Chronicle, which is really not saying very much.  Seriously, how many hamburger reviews does one city need?

I'm amazed that Fox 26 has NOT picked a permanent replacement for Christy'ann Uribe, who was the Weekday Traffic Anchor before she left.

I know Coco Dominguez briefly did Traffic during 5:00 PM newscasts before she moved to doing "The Buzz" entertainment segments.

I still like to know if Jose Grinan & Denise Middleton are coming back ? 😕

I'm on the exact opposite of the political spectrum as Whitmire, but I'll tell you that electing him can be one of the best moves Houston can make in a long time. He's well connected with the regular people of Houston and is a damned good administrator. If you ask him to, he will hold that dumb bolshevik (rhymes with witch)'s feet to the fire and get that big ditch dug near the jailhouse.

Praying to God that Whitmire WINS this fall. He's got 50 years of political experience: having served in the TX House of Representatives from the 82nd District (1973-1983) for 5 2-year terms & currently serving in the TX State Senate representing District 15 since 1983.

Plus he's the former brother-in-law of former Houston Mayor Kathy Whitmire (D), who held the office for 5 2-year terms from 1982 to 1992.

Pledges are meaningless to me, without very detailed plans to back them up.  But politicians only put out vague lists of promises as they campaign, for fear of alienating one-issue voters.

I no longer base my voting decisions on what people say they will do, but rather on what they've done so far.

I should note Austinites just elected former State Senator Kirk Watson (D-Austin) to 3rd non-consecutive term as Austin Mayor earlier this month.

Watson will be up for 4th term in 2024 as the Mayoral election will move into presidential years.

  6. Good Morning HAIF Family. I've started discussion megathread on the upcoming 2023 Mayoral election for Houston Mayor in the race to succeed outgoing Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner (D), who's term limited from seeking a 3rd consecutive term.

The obvious frontrunner is longtime State Senator John Whitmire (D-Houston), who's the brother-in-law of former Houston Mayor Kathy Whitmire (D), who held the office for 5 2-year terms from 1982 to 1992.

    Whitmire's pledges if elected:

    *Solve the homeless crisis.

*Vastly improve Houston's tattered streets & dramatically improve flood control.

*Uniting law enforcement & citizens against rampant crime.

*Negotiating fair deal with HFD firefighters.

*Repairing Houston's dysfunctional & chaotic relationship with state leaders in Austin.

Any thoughts on the upcoming 2023 Mayoral election & I've got some questions:

1.) Will this go into a runoff ?

2.) Do you think any of the GOPers (Kubosh or Knox) will jump in ?

3.) Does Whitmire win outright to avoid a runoff ?

The State of Texas has ordered North Forest ISD to shut down in 2012. The district management is trying to fight it:

It's about time that the district goes. Houston ISD will be the one picking up the territory in 2012.

The U.S. Department of Justice will have to approve of the closure. Since it approved the closures of Wilmer Hutchins ISD and Kendleton ISD (other small, mostly African-American school districts), I don't see it denying the closure of NFISD.

Any new developments in the North Forest ISD situation ?

Don't forget the new UH campus at Katy next to the new Katy Asian Town development.  According to the press release, that will be UH nursing and UH engineering along with UHV at Katy.  I'm assuming the current UHV at Katy campus will be closed in favor of this one, but who knows?

How many of these U of H campuses is the University of Houston planning to build ? 🤔

I have to wonder if Cagle pulling those no show stunts cost him his spot. It really was not a great look, and I’m sure there were Republican people who protest-voted against him.

Beto O’Rourke is just a lackluster candidate for TX imho. I think people just don’t care for him all that much. He’s lost several elections now, and I feel like the Democrats would do well to focus resources into bringing up a different candidate if they want a hope of flipping the governor’s race.

Del Moral Mealer vs Hidalgo being that close is something I’m really interested to hear more about. O’Rourke carried Harris county, yet the county judge race was much closer- does that mean there were a sizeable number of O’Rourke voters who voted for del Moral Mealer over Hidalgo? Actually, looking at the results, a lot of the judge races were quite close.

Abbott won by DOUBLE DIGITS over that 4-time LOSER from El Paso (55% to 43%) & carried 235 out of 254 counties.

ROFLMAO...Judge Hidalgo gets Hanoi Jane to campaign for her!!!  🤣🤣🤣

Jane Fonda block walks with Lina Hidalgo ahead of early voting

In a city filled with people who fled the communist regime in Vietnam, I'm not sure whether inviting Hanoi Jane to campaign shows a complete lack of judgement or if Hidalgo and staff are just too young and clueless to know who this elderly white California liberal is.  I can't wait to see how this gets written up in the local Vietnamese newspaper.

All signs are pointing toward Mealer winning in 12 days because she's got the momentum.

For those of you who don't subscribe to multiple newspapers, you may not know that The Houston Chronicle does something interesting.  If someone at the Chronicle (or maybe Hearst?) deems a comic strip too controversial, the strip gets replaced by a rerun.

I've noticed this twice since I've been here.

This is the Dilbert that ran in the Chronicle on July 25, 2022:

This is the correct Dilbert that ran in other newspapers to which I subscribe:

    Correct.png

If you look closely, you can see that the Dilbert that ran in the Chronicle on July 25, 2022 is dated July 26, 2016.

On July 25, I sent an e-mail to the Chronicle asking for an explanation, but received no response.  Disappointing, considering that I am a paying subscriber.

I noticed it again today.  Here is the Dilbert that ran in the Chronicle this morning (September 12, 2022):

Notice that it's dated September 15, 2016.  Here's the Dilbert that ran in other newspapers today:

    Screen Shot 2022-09-12 at 4.09.35 PM.png

I get that it's a controversial topic, and some people might be uncomfortable with it.  But as I stated in my letter to the Chronicle:

"It would have been better for the Chronicle to either move the strip to the Editorial section, or to place a notice in its usual place explaining why today’s strip was not printed.  Perhaps both were in order.

I won’t use a mere comic strip to get on a soapbox about a newspaper’s journalistic integrity, and how a lack of transparency leads the public to believe the worst about an organization.  But I do want to note that I am an adult, and can handle being exposed to viewpoints from all parts of the political spectrum.  I suspect anyone who spends real money subscribing to a newspaper is of similar maturity."

The Chronicle needs competition.  Too bad the majority of people choose to not pay for their news.

It's worth noting that this kind of content replacement isn't unprecedented in Houston.  There's a bunch of television shows that KPRC-TV has refused to show over the years.

They still have these creepy cartoons in the Chronicle ?
