  1. According to HBJ, this is a go, late 2021 completion.
  2. Does anyone know what happened to Alexan? I noticed the name was changed to 1414 Texas and it is now owned by ZRS Management. Seems like a really quick sale. The building has only been complete for 6 months. https://www.1414texasdowntown.com/
  3. What is the history of the lots outside the seawall? Were they originally city blocks that just erroded over the years?
  4. Are there any historic pictures of this space? I went last night. They preserved the original terrazzo and the columns appear to have the original stone. There was also an original railing and air grate up in Swallow's Nest. Other than that, very few historic details left. I didn't pay attention to my meal price, but my friend did note her meal was $20 for a cheeseburger, onion rings, and a tea. A homeless man came in towards the end of our meal and asked if he could help clear our table. I imagine they have some sort of control for this. Additionally, the pizza place was still closed. Not sure what is going on there.
  5. Has anyone seen any more information on Tranquility Park being renovated? In my opinion, it needs more help than Jones Plaza. I walked through this park and around City Hall over the weekend on my way to The Hobby Center. The sidewalks are narrow and in extremely bad shape. It seems like City Hall is used enough to justify improving this area. This website says the fountains have been closed since 2013. Maybe something will happen after the Bagby redo. Tranquillity Park Fountain - September 9, 2013 - Until Further Notice Due to mechanical repairs, the Tranquillity Park fountain basin has been drained and the tall "stacks" will not be operational for the duration of the project. http://www.houstontx.gov/parks/closedrepair.html
  6. I stayed at the JW Saturday, my impression was that the wall was to spruce the area up a bit for those people staying at the JW. The valet is right in front of the old Battelstein's and the building is dark and dicey looking at night. I imagine it will be covered with one of those banners that look like fake retail. BTW - the JW has a lot of work left. I stayed on floor 12, but wondered around a bit. Floors 2-5 had a lot of work left on them. Not sure how much is complete.
  7. Most if not all of the Christmas lights on the downtown buildings are permanent. They are just turned off after the holidays. I am not sure the exact specifications, but I have been on several downtown roofs and the bulbs look like a regular residential 60/100 watt medium base lamp bulb or globe bulb. I think most of them are now fluorescent or LED.
  8. It appears Pepper Jack's closed. It was dark tonight with a now leasing sign on the building. I didn't get to read the sign on the window.
  9. Beware the scallop. It is not very good, raw, and tiny. Really not worth $10 or $2. I even told the waiter it was not very good, something I never do, he didn't seem to care.
  10. Does anyone have any pictures of the site now? I was down there for the demo, but I ran from the dust and haven't had a chance to see what was left.
  11. I imagine it is going to take a lot to get that church stable.
  12. This looks great, but does anyone know the reason for the black plate glass on the third floor? I am just wondering why the one floor is different.
  13. Billboards, billboards, and more billboards? This park is getting so cluttered.
  14. How much of the "Super Block" will the park take up?
  15. I found this at the Hillstone/Houston's Restaurant (Kirby@Westpark). I thought it was neat. I wonder how many people notice it or even know the significance of the Shamrock. Anyways, I would sure like one of the bricks. Who knows what will happen to them if the restaurant remodels or closes.
  16. Here is a picture of what is left of the watch company Little Frau mentions. The space is currently vacant, but was Franklin Street coffee house for awhile. The book, Images of America: Houston in the 1920's and 1930's, has a great exterior picture of the watch shop in 1928. The shop was simply called Houston Watch Co. I have also included and interior pic of the sky bridge.
  17. I was picking a friend up from the Bayou Lofts at 915 Franklin this weekend and I noticed a very old sky bridge that connects 915 Franklin with 917 Franklin on approximately the 5th floor. 915 Franklin was built between 1910-11. 917 Franklin was built in 1904. The bridge appears to be added to both after the original construction. It would be interesting to know when and why it was built. It is also visible on Google Street View.
  18. What did the 3100 Travis Building use to be? It is really cool inside and out.
  19. Didn't this building go up for sale this summer? I have been searching for articles on it, but I can't find anything. What a great building. It really needs to be saved.
  20. I believe that side faces an undeveloped lot. Who knows what will be built there and when. If someone wants to build a high-rise there, the windows would have to be covered up.
  21. I just flew them this weekend for the first time. Great experience. They remind me of how Southwest used to be. It will be nice to have them at Hobby.
  22. I was just reading about this on Swamplot. A little off topic from the fire, but does anyone have any pictures of the interior of this place? All I can find are exterior photos.
  23. It is really interesting and sad to see the progression of this building.
