  1. Southwestern Paint had a pretty big fire, i believe it was in 2011, i lived 2 building down at the time. They did reopen, then they moved soon after (to Taft), same time Bobbit Glass moved.
  2. The inside is completely gutted and cleaned up. They've added lighting to the front that looks pretty good. I haven't walked by in a while, took the best shot i could in the car:
  3. I heard that the kiosk food was going to be from Cyclones? Not a reliable source, just talk. Any one know what the plan is for that kiosk?
  4. great video Triton! I thought you were kayaking at first. Impressive how smooth the video is from a drone. Is it a Phantom copter? Project is looking great, filling out nicely.
  5. According to HCAD, 1800 St Joseph is owned by John Beeson. Did a little search and found this: http://realtynewsreport.com/2014/07/28/city-of-houston-rejecting-john-beesons-high-bid-of-40-million-for-tract-near-downtown-houston/ Article is about the land on West Dallas and Gillette. But if he does own it, he's a developer with a fat check book.
  6. Interesting. From window.state.tx: I really thought the sales tax rate at Baybrook was the lower Friendswood rate, but I haven't been there in 10+ years...
  7. Also keep in mind that there is a Main Event not far down the freeway (<1 mile). They have a full bar, laser tag, bowling, billiards, mini golf. I think they have some video games too? I think that's more driven to parents taking their kids, but probably still considered direct competition.
  8. I'm with you Arche. I went once in undergrad (st louis) for a bday or something. The only thing I know of now where people go (i'm in my 30's) is for corporate events. But that doesn't seem like it could sustain their business.
  9. Looks like they (D&B ) are trying to go public: http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/06/04/us-davebusters-ipo-idUSKBN0EF2DQ20140604
  10. I have only been to the Houston Zoo once since it became private, other then that I went several times as a child in the 80's-90's. I was in awe as a child, then depressed going to zoos as I got older. This includes Dallas, St Louis, and DC zoos. The only zoo i have been to where it felt natural, the animals appeared happy, and it was a completely enjoyable experience was the Taronga Zoo in Sydney. The night zoo in Singapore also wasn't bad, but it was hard to tell exactly what was going on with the animals. Anyways, though I find it unfortunate how many of the animals are treated I am sure I will take my kids to the Houston Zoo (when I have some to take!). I understand the flow of Hermann Park and the open feel. But what if a garage was built across Hermann Park Dr, there is a surface there in front of the Conservancy. Even a 2 story garage with rooftop parking that has greenery/vines on the walls would effectively triple the size of that lot and they could convert most of the Zoo lot to expand the actual zoo?
  11. Pepperoni's next to BBs. I was going by and saw they were giving away a free slice as part of their soft opening. Got a slice of pepperoni, pretty good. I guess its a local chain with several locations in the burbs. Pink's is probably the closest thing I could describe it as (both the place and the pie). The guy said they were planning on being open til at least 2am Thursday-Saturday for slices.
  12. This is pretty cool. When I first heard it on the radio I thought it was in the Majors, but still very cool nonetheless: http://houston.cbslocal.com/2014/05/27/astros-prospects-first-home-run-of-season-caught-by-his-dad/
  13. Pizza L'Vino is my new go to for hand tossed. Their ingredients are very fresh. For deep dish the two times I tried from there, it was way undercooked for my taste (delivery). I just popped it in the oven on a pizza stone for a few minutes and then it was pretty good. I haven't had Star in a while, but always loved their wheat deep dish. Never had any problems with soggy toppings. Franks for a late night slice for sure! I wish I could like Pink's more since I can walk there, but its just too expensive...
  14. Rent-a-fence for FPSF was being put up yesterday, just east of the Fed (same entrance as always). They were building a huge stage in front of that new structure, i'll post pics later. also saw 100+ planters with plants and small trees just east of the tolerance sculptures that should be going in. Dog park is moving along nicely as well, they have put in a few structures there.
  15. I'm in the exact same position, i moved to the area and started biking that area in 2003. I actually liked that it was rustic, there was not great path for road bikes, and it wasn't crowded. But its hard to complain about how much they have done, creating an asset for the city. For the security, I'm sure cost is a factor. Segways would be tough for that reason. Most rental security (i have come across) are way too lazy for bikes. though i like both of those ideas. I've seen HPD on horses in the areas closer to downtown on occasion. but that's different of course. The ones i saw would just stop when I was coming to make sure I can avoid them, and they were on the edge of the path - so they were as courteous as possible. But they did take up most of the path and cause traffic jams a few times.
  16. Summerfest in a week and a half. Not sure how they are going to set it up. There are 6 stages (were there 7 last year?), but they don't have a map or anything yet. They were really close to pouring concrete on the last of the paths in that area, so that should be ready at least. the new sod will probably get destroyed...
  17. Riding on Sunday and yesterday evening, I saw a few security guards on golf carts on the path. I wonder if that is going to be a normal thing?
  18. searching for the chron url did not work for me this time, it usually does. then i did a search for 'chron grb superbowl' and it was the first link, and that gave me the full article
  19. http://www.nasa.gov/centers/johnson/about/people/index.html "Johnson Space Center's 15,000 civil servants and contractors work within a structure of directorates reporting to the center director." My point was, that its not that bad. Its a government program, its going to vary depending on the budget, congress, and presidency. ISS just got extended through 2024, our budget is not what we wanted but at least it hasn't gone down.
  20. many of the shuttle folks found jobs on other nasa contracts in the area. clear lake is doing as well as ever. holding at ~3K civil servants and well over 10K contractors employed by JSC. i completely avoid baybrook and clear lake in general other than my commute because its so crowded. hopefully this expansion won't affect the through traffic on 45 too much...
  21. This is one of the top tourist destinations in Istanbul: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g293974-d294555-Reviews-Basilica_Cistern-Istanbul.html Ok, ours isn't 1500 years old and probably doesn't compare, but I paid to get in just to walk through (small fee) and they hold benefits and concerts down there all the time.
  22. Ch 11 is reporting that is contained to that site. These are not the Fingers apartments. They were being built by JLB apartments. They were unoccupied. No one reported hurt so far. The news story last night was about the historic cemetery adjacent to the new apartments, and complaints about respect for that cemetery. Obviously there will be a full arson investigation.
  23. live coverage online: http://www.khou.com/home/238613191.html my condo is a few blocks from here...
