I will be the first to state- Highway landscaping rocks, when done right.

So of course each time I see huge stretches with no landscaping, I am so let down.........I always ask myself, in TXDOZt kazillion dollar budget for highway construction, all that upturned dirt, just waiting there, and there's no room for wildflower seeds? Ever?

I remember when the median of 288 near Brays Bayou used to be full of bluebonnets during the Spring. With the toll lanes added, I guess there's no room for the wildflower seeds anymore. Though I have seen them growing through cracks in the riprap.

Is it just me or did all the Houston South Main Street signs get changed to simply say Main Street instead? I’m pretty sure I saw the remembrance of a “S.” on the green street signs.

Maybe even Google Maps has switched to recognizing Main Street, instead of South Main Street. Thought I noticed that recently.

A quick look at historical imagery on Google Street View shows a few green street signs having the S present in 2015 and blanked out by 2017 The ones that still have the S were signs installed by the Five Corners Management District. Interesting!

That's very true. One of the few places there were good photos of the Chase Tower under construction that I was aware of.

The good news is that some of them still exist.

The photographer's period photos of Fort Worth appear to be in the Library Archives there. Some of his Minneapolis photos are digitally preserved and available online. Wish the Houston photos were available somewhere else.

I was able to access some of the photos using the wayback machine. It's a slow process, but it's the only way now.

The Holmes Road reconstruction from Main Street to Kirby Drive. This one is taking for ever!  I did notice the street sidewalks are extra wide.  There are also newly paved driveways into the Holmes Road parcels of land.  It's looking very nice. The sidewalks are a dream. I believe the street will also get new street lights and utility poles.

I was thinking they would've been finished by now! I hadn't been that way in a couple of months and was wondering if it was complete.

  5. I'm not sure where to post this, but 3126 S. MacGregor suffered a small fire during the thunderstorms on 8/10/22. I did see a lightning strike in that direction before the fire. Looks like it was quickly contained and extinguished. I walked down and was able to see firefighters cutting into the roof I presume to gain access to the fire. The structure doesn't look to be in any danger. Hopefully they'll get a check to fix it without deciding to remodel it into something ungainly or decide to demo it.

Interesting dome shaped gas station at the Kirby & Main intersection.  Found this on the A Field Guide to Gas Stations in Texas book.

That was actually located on 610 near Kirby. That building was demolished in the late 90s or early 00s. The Sterling Inn stands there now.
